PAGE SIX "THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1927 BASKETBALL PROSPECTS AT COLLEGIATE BRIGHT FOR COMING SEASON Students Basket Team Hold Initial Workout Coach Patterson is Optimistic Over Outlook--Forty Boys Turn Out on Gym Floor as Candidates for Junior and Senior Teams Basketball prospects at the Osh- awa Collegiate Institute for the coming winter season never looked brighter than they do right now. Last night when Coach Patterson called the initial workout there were no less than forty boys qn the floor, all with the expres purpose of catching places on either the jnior or senior quintettes. Juniors were in their. glory for practically every place on the junior team can be keenly contested for by inexperienced players. The junior team of last year is graduated into senior ranks, and the bulk of the positions are empty. When Coach Patterson lined the boys up last night there were 24 juniars for training. Thus the junior team is not wanting in material and surely a good fast team can be selected. The senior team will be exception ally strong, fo: in addition to the greater part pf dast year's team, there were some new faces out. Fif- teen players trying for positions were on the floor. The senior practice consisted of passing, basket shooting etc. While the juniors were given a more thorough line of preliminary training. Gym work occupied the most time, and this was followed by a ten minute workout with the ball. Rugby during the past few months has helped not a little toward put- ting the senior basketeers into con- dition and the gring on the grid has left the lads in a creamy shape and all that is practically needed now is practice on the floor. While inter- form rugby, no doubt, helped the juniors to a certain extent, they are rot yet in the condition the seniors are. It will, however, require, but several good workouts to bring both teams to a par. Who will Oshawa C.I. be grouped with in this coming basketball ser- ies? That is a question that is also occupying the atten- tion of parties concerned. Well, that is exactly how many Coach Patterson was successful in getting out for places on his junior and senior squads. Twenty-four of these were juniors while the remainder belonged to the senior division. Stiff workouts were in order and the boys went through their paces in good order. The total workout lasted two hours, the boys going on the floor shortly after four o'clock and it was after six when "the final whistle to the showers blew. -- When Tigers invaded Toronto on October 4, 1919, they brought with them young Leadley, who found himself opposing another newly graduated junior named Batstone. Leadley did the punting that day with the shifty Chicken" McKelvey flanking him, while the chunky "red-head" was paired with "Dud" Garrett and Pocock. Argos won by 30 to 11. Tigers turned the tables in the return game at Hamilton, winning 9 to 6. They scored the deciding touchdown from a fake drop kick with Leadley as the treat. It is worthy of mention that this game was featured by heavy going through the wings and casualties were numerous. The most serious injury sustained by Argonauts was when Middlewing Rodden was forced to retire with a broken rib, Saturday the former Double Blue middlewing leads Tigers in Kingston in the person of Coach Michael James Rodden, and his former teammate is the man who bars the way in his team's cham- pionship march. 4 ; The Shamrocks, the local junior entry in the Ontario Hockey Associa- tion series are going to Toronto tonight for their regular Thursday night practice. Tonight's workout will take place at the Arena Gardens, Mu- tual street, and the party will leave Ratz's Tobacco Shop sharp at five to'clock. The change in scenery from the Ravina Rink is due to the fact that the team will play its S.P.A. game there and the management feels that the team should get acquainted with the place. That is the right spirit and it just shows: that the men behind the team are really taking an interest in the thing, y After having competed in two professional swim Marathons, that at Lake George and here in the C.N.E. $50,000 affair, Tommy Walker, of the Central Y.M.C.A, Swimming Club, will seek reinstatement, He com- peted in a closed club meet last night and won the 100 metres event. Under Canadian Amateur Swimming Association regulations, Walker's ap- pearance last night was not a violation of its amateur definition. . The swimmer has unquestioned speed in sprints and middle-distance events but long, punishing grinds are not his specialty. It is doubtful if any of the competitors in either of the Marathons in which he competed could beat him at his favorite distances. If successful in securing reinstatement, Walker will be a strong candidate for the Canadian Olympic swimming team.-- Toronto Globe. With the end of the month drawing nearer, fans of the ring are urged not to make any "dates" for December 7th. For that is the night upon which the Ontario Regiment will stage its local tournament. The soldier boxers are losing no time in getting into shape and promise to provide the outsiders with an interesting evening's entertainment. Further an- nouncements in regard to the program, etc., will he made later, but in the meantime, just remember to keep Dec. 7 an open date. After six vears Frank "Pep" Leadley and Harry Lee Batstone, most colorful of present-day backfielders, will face each other across the chalk- ed hnes in a league fixture and the eves of Canadian football fans are centred on the coming duel between these former teammates when Ham- ilton Tigers and Queen's clash at Kingston next Saturday in the C.R.U semi-final, For four years Batstone and Leadley formed one of the great- of the fall pastime while wear- ing the livery of the Tricolor. Last year Leadley was graduated and Bat- stone remained to carry on, while "Pep" returned to his old love, the Tigers. moked and Pacific Coast to A by every age and every class en joued. from Hantic Seaboard QUEEN'S PRACTICE ON MUD COVERED FIELD Kingston, Ont.,- Nov. 17--Practicing on a field that was covered with mud while rain fell continually. Queen's champions, had a tough workout yes- terday afternoon at the Richardson Stadium, in preparation for the game with Hamilton Tigers on Saturday. The field was a quagmire, as rain has | been falling heavily all day, and to- | night there was a harder downpour than ever. Excepting Harry Batstone "Chick" Mundell, all the players on j the squad were out to practice. Bat- stone's knee is still troubling him, but it is fast responding to treatment, and it is now considered likely he will he on the. field when the game is started and Saturday. It is a question, however, how long he will be able to play, and Carter was today being groomed for the kicking task, and may take up this end of the play on Saturday in order to relieve Batstone, and thereby allow the Queen's star to remain in the game longer. The players were mud and water from head to foot at the end of their two hours' practice, for Coach Carson scemed entirely oblivious of the con- ditions, and drove the team at the same pace they travelled in fine wea- ther and on a dry gridiron. Whether Queen's will work an aerial attack on Tigers remains to be seen, and it is merely a question of the weather. The Tricolor players are all in the pink of condition except Bat- stone. The latter will have his knee bound up with a leather guard, and ex- pects himself to be in shape for the full game.
