EE ---------- (108-t1) FAMOUS SOLDIER | SENDS OUT APPEAL FOR WORLD PEACE Field Marshal Robertson Addresses Plea to All Britons | WAR COSTS APPAL Startling Figures Quoted on Burden Empire is Carrying London, Nov. 10.--Field Marshal Sir William Robertson, speaking | from the viewpoint of a soldier with half a century cf service, issues an appeal for peace and disarmament which has roused the greatest in- terest throughout Great Britain, He exhorts every British man and woman to join hands in an ef- fort to prevent future wars. up- pealing to them to support all ef- forts to devise more sensible ways | of composing, international differ- ences. The movement toward economy in armaments is growing very rapid- lv here. and lord Rothermere's Daily Mail 'considers Sir William Robertson's plea so impressive that it gives it pride of place in Thurs- day's issue. Emphasizing the ruin- ous financial burden of existing military conditions. the Field Mur shal says: 'Conditions within the: British Empire are such to make Imperial defence a very expensive business for this country and we are new snending on the fighting services and other allied Rervices more than the country ean afford." Germany Disarmed Sir William adds, "The annual sum voted for these purposes now amounts to £116,000,000 sterling or £40,000,000 more than bpfore the war," He then argues that as Germany is disarmed and that despotic mon- archial governments maintaining | great national armies, which have | hitherto been active causes of war, | are now rare, the British defence | arrangements can afford to be more | medest, | "No longer," he says, 'can na- | tions be ordered into war by swol- | len headed monarchs claiming to be! almost equal with the Almighty." | The cost of modern war should | also be kept in the public mind as a deterent, he adds. 'The cost of our artillery bombardment previ- cus to launching the infantry at- | tack at the Battle of Arras was £13,000,000 sterling, the barrage at Messine cost £17,500.000 sterl- ing and that at the third battle | of Ypres £22,000,000 sterling, mak- | ing a total of £52,000,000 for these' three operations alone. "The weight of the gun ammuni- | tion fired in the Battle of Messine amounted to 85,000 tong and in the first nine weeks of the Battle of Ypres 480,000 tons of shells were hurled inio the enemy's lines." B50 Year's Experience Summing up an earnest and wholehearted plea for peace and dis- armament, Sir William Robertson says: "This is the only conclusion I can reach after a military career whieh will have covered on Sunday next a period of .exactly 50 years. May we not also say that if the fu- tility of war were more insistently emphasized by military leaders and the desire for peace more carefully nourishd the defence of the Brit- ish Empire would soon become 2a far easier and cheaper task than ft now fis." Members of parliament are urg- ently demanding more economy in military and naval armaments and Winston Churchill in his control of the Treasury is accused of letting the army and avy air forces spend too much money. On the other hand, Brig.-Gen. P. R. C. Groves, former director or flying operations and for threa years British air advisor on the Supreme Air Council, says that London is defenceless against mod- ern air raids and that at the pres- ent rate of progress it will be eight years before a minimum con- dition of air defence will be achiey- ed. He demands more active steps in th#s direction.
