It ir - said that he was under the influ- ence of liquor. : A quarrel ensued when the visi- tors from Fort William and Hil side started to prepare to drive home. Niemi objected. Makiner was about to get out of the car which he had entered with the others when, it is charged, Niem! struck him with his hand, in which was clenched a | hunter's knife Makinen was wounded in the lef: shotlder, witnesses say, the knife heing dragged down and making & jagged cut, severing an artery and puncturing the lung. Makinen stag ered over to the threshold of the cabin, where he collapsed amd died instantly. Niemi then disappeared iy is said. Arrested im Bed Acting Inspector Hake, Sergeant of Provincial Police, and Constable J. Jago arrived at the scene as soun as they could reach there after the receipt of a telephone message Passing through Fort William they visited Niemi's shack, two miles from the sceme of the murder, and picked up Coroner R. M. Boyd. They found him asleep im his bed. The police state that as they awoke him a hunter's knife covered with blood stains slipped on to the floor.. An analysis is being made of the stains to ascertain if they are human blood stains or not. Supression of the revolt is estimated to have cost 50 rebel lives.
