MARKHAM FLOWER SHOW HAS LARGE ENTRY LIST Markham. Aug. 29--There was an unusually large number of entries in the eighth annual flower and vegetable show at the Markham Horticultural Hall here Saturday. Outstanding fea- tures of the show were an exhibition of roses .from the famous demonstra- tion plot of the Markham Rose Society and a display of annuals, perennials and evergreens from the Glen Rouge gardens of Harry M. Rolph. The gla- diolus exhibits of H. C. Hammill and Fred leas received particular 'com- mendation from the judges. News comes from Paris that skirts are to be worn even shorter this coming winter. Well it's all off now'! --Judge. Hangers for trousers were invent- ed by a married woman. It will be remembered that, when these are used, they cause the trousers to hang downwakrds.--Judge. three hundred indirectly. On the Ont. : CHARGES B13 WORSHIP CALLED (Continued from page 7) business, and at that time was in- formed as to how long I would be away. On my return to Oshawa, to- day, I was informed by various eciti- zens of the Town, as well as by members of the City Council that the purpose of tonight's City Council Meeting was to pass a Resolution, or a By-Law providing for the paving of Warren Avenue and Gladstone Avenue North of the limite for pave- ment already provided for, and across and North of the old Toron- to and Eastern Railway tracks and continuing North through the lands belonging to Mayor R. D. Preston and his partner. While there may have been some justification for the paving of the above named Streets up to the Southern limit of the To- ronto and Eastern Railway Com- pany's lands, there cannot be any justification for paving them further North through the land# of real es- tate speculators. May I call your attention to the fact that there are many Streets in the City of Oshawa wholly built upon, and with houses of substantial nature erected thereon, which have heen refuse pavement this year. Cedardale and the South East Ward have receiv- ed nothing. Streets, such as, Athol Street and Arthur Street" Bast to the Ritson Road, and which are a credit to the working men of this City were refused pavement this vear, and they have not a single lot from Ritson Road to their Eastern limit which are not built upon, and in a majority of cases the buildings have heen erected for a number of years, I wish to protest against the ex- ploitation of the City of Oshawa by speculators in real estate, and also to protest against the giving to the Mayor, or any member of this Coun- cil any special privileges in connec- tion with their real estate holdings which have been refused to other residents of the City. The opening of farm lands for private gain by either citizens of the Town or by the Mayor or mem- bers of this Council is not to be de- precated, but there is no reason why the City Council should assist these men to the detriment of the citizens owning lands upon Streets, already largely built upon, and paying heavy taxes. In addition to this, T submit to you, and to the members of the City Council, that the Meeting of tonight has been illegally called, and that the Mayor can oly call "Special" meetings of the City Council for "Special" business, and that the na- ture of the business must be upon the notices sent to its various mem- bers. Further let me say that if the City Council takes any step at tonight's meeting to further the | Mayor's project of paving Warren and Gladstone Avenues, I will ap- peal to the Courts in an. effort to stop this exploitation of the City's resources, ete. I ask you, Mr. Clerk, to read this Jetter to the City Council, and to ex- press to them my confidence in their sense of duty to the Public, and their fairness to the whole. [I regret my absence from the meeting tonight, due, as I have already stated, to the demands of my private business, and also due to the fact that the meeting was .call- ed by the Mayor of this City with full knowledge that I was not ex- pected to be in Oshawa at this time. Yours truly, D. A. J. SWANSON APPOINT BOARD TO SETTLE DOMINION POWER DISPUTE Ottawa, Ont., Aug. 29--A board of conciliation and investigation under the provinces of the Industrial disputes In- vestigation Act, 1907, has been estab- lished by the Minister of Labor to deal with a dispute between the Dominion Power and Transmission Company and certain of its employees being linemen, high tension trouble men, ground men, shop men, armature winders, machin- ists, wire men and helpers, etc., mem- bers of the Canadian Electrical Union, Hamilton branch. The wharf, either in its initial or extended stage, would at Nelson be governed by the limiting nature of its aproach to ves- sels of 26 feet draught during a brief period around high water at neap tides unless much increased expendi- ture is incurred in dredging. It is limited to a draught of 28 feet, even after this dredging is done, unless still further expenditure of a prohibitive character is undertaken. At Churchill the accommodation proposed will, in the initial development, admit of 28- foot draught vessels during the 24 hours of each day, while for extensions there is no practical limit to the draught of vessels which can be pro- vided for. "7. The evidence regarding ice con- ditions at both ports is vague and inconclusive, and no satisfactory or reliable decision can be given in re- gard thereto. It has been stated that the river at Churchill freezes over earlier than the Nelson River and also that the Bay ice blocks the entrance to Nelson for a later period thaf that over which Churchill entrance is closed, but in the absence of any evi- dence dealing directly with the navi- gation aspect of the guestion it is impossible to say that either port is open to ocean-going steamers for a longer or shorter period than the other.
