Reveal Secrets of. .. Space (By Cenadian Press) Washington, N.C, Aug. B. -- Carry- ing an instrument sp delicate that it is believed it eonld measure the hear of a match 5000 miles away if no atmos- where intervened, Dr. Charles G. Ab- ott, acting secretary of the Smithson- ian Institution, has started for Mount Wilson, California, to continue the measurement of the heat of the stars. The instrument, so frail that flies' wings are used in its makeup, is de- scribed as an improved radiometer, ten times more sensitive than the one used by Dr. Abbot in 1923, when he made the first determinations of the heat spectrum of ten of the brightest stars other than the sun in the history of astronomy. With the new instrument, 1)r. Abbot helieves it will 'be possible to observe the heat of the spectra of stars fainter than the Pole star. The Smithsonian official also plans to visit the Solar Radiation Observa- tory on Table Mountain, California, where dily observations of the varia- tions of the sun are being made in co-operation with stations in Chile and Southwest Africa to wetermine the sun's influence upon weather condi- tions. OUTWITTED KINGS Eeywiisn Srillpion Sigwed Work With Own Statues 2 in Relief (By Capadian Press) Chicago, Ill, Aug. 8.--Behief that the ancient Egyptian artists and sculptors preferred anonymity is dispelled by Edith Williams Ware, of the Univer- sity of Chicago, in an article in the American Journal of Semetic Langu- ages. The ancients longed for fame and re- cognition, Miss Ware said. Because of fear of incurring the wrath of their masters, however, the Egyptians resort- ed to subterfuge in identifying their works. Study of the tomb walls and memorials has shown that wherever possible the work of the artist was identified. Two methods were generally adopt- ed. Frequently they placed figures of themselves in among other servitors, officials, or friends the of the person for whom the work was being done. A second method was to rule off margins and place inscriptions in the space. Miss Ware also declared these was jealousy even in those days between those who merely could draw, known as "outhne draughtsnien," and the creative artists. (30c) 1OST- ena St, brown. oolour, -- (By Canadian Press) Paris, Aug. 8. Paris is having some success in dts détermined cam- paign to foist lang hair upon its short- skirted customers, Some ladies whe said they would never wear hobble skirts, - and wore them, or trouser skirts, and are wear- ing them declared they would not give up their short hair. Yet the least trained observer in the smart restau- rants and dancing places of Paris notes the growing number of fashionably dressed women with long hair. Hair dyessers are so confident long hair. is 'due for a revival that they are laying in large supplies of detachable transformations to tide their clients over the transition period. Even hair- pains are in readiness for the renais- sance of women's crowning beauty, TURKEY'S CAPITAL HISES IN SPLENDOR Ariors Under dor Kerns) Pasha, is Made Thoroughly ' 'Modern Angora, Turkey, Ang. 8. -- The new Turkish capital here is sprinting up with great rapidity, and Angora is now the most modern and up-to-date city in Turkey A water system for 120,000 inhabi- tants has been installed, gangs work- ing on it day and night. Since March five furlongs of the foup-mile "Grand Boulevard Ghazi" have been built. It runs toward Tchankaya, when the resi- dences of the president and ministers, embassies and legations are. It is a double highway 40 yards wide with trees planted down the centre, and even on Fridays, the Mohammedan Sabbath, work is pushed along it, A quarter of 'a million trees have been planted to provide the new dis- tricts with shade from the fierce sumn- mer sun and the recurrent dust-storms. Nearly 1,000 residential villas, each with its own square of ground, have been built, partly by the prefecture and partly by private persons. Huge buildings to house the Agricultural Bank, the Ottoman Bank, the Minis- tries of Justice and Health and the Customs Direction are almost ready to be handed over. Cheap and continnous one-deck mo- tor-omnibus services link up all the parts of the new town. The hotels are improving fast and even a number of night cabarets haye opened. An auto matic telephone system has been in stalled, 'and a 3,000 kilowatt electric light station is being erected to aly- ment the present supply. A gas co cession has been granted. There is a continual influx of repre- sentatives of foregin business groups. About $15,000,000 is to be spent on a ten-year town planning program. The improvements now being made are executed on a budget of about $500,- 000 a year. CANADIAN GOLFERS SIGNALLY HONORED (By Conadian Press) New York, N.Y., Aug. 8. -- For the for the famous Lesley Cup, it will be contested for this year by a team of Canadians. Heretofore the Lesley Cup matches have been a "family affair" among teams of golfers from New York, Philadelphia and Boston. Re- cently, Robert W. Lesley, donor of the cup, invited the Royal Canadian Golf Association to send a team this year and the invitation has been ac- cepted. The matches will be played early this Fall in the Boston district.
