Pro- tence Ottawa, ont, 4 Aug. 3.--Crowds' which thronged upon Parliament Hill and silently looked up to the stately memorial tower above them shared today in one of the impres- sive moments of Canada's history, the dedication by His Royal High- ness, the Prince of Walés, of the Altar upen which will rest the Book of Remembrance. It was a unique role which the huge crowd played in the ceremony. They were neither observers nor were they listeners to it. The ac- tual cremony was confined to the small Memorial Chamber in the Peace Tower where the Prince of Wales and Premier King the solemn formalities. None the less, how- ever, notwithstanamg that they were removed from the intimacy of the rights, the crowd realized that they had an imporwant part to play in them, a part which they played with solemn im ppepsivieness, {the part of reverence toward the na- tion's heroic dead. The Book of Remembrance is the volume containing the proudest rec- ord which Canada possesses, the names of each and all of the sixty thousand service men and nursing sisters who gave their lives in the great war, It is to rest on the altar which His Royal Highness dedicated today in the Memorial Chamber, which is a small room solemn in its architectual beauty, located in the Peace Tower. Parliament Hill, which is always an inspiring sight with its imposing group of Government Buildings, pre- sented its most beautiful aspect for the occassion, a day of brighest sun- shine prevailing. Shortly after one o'clock the great concourse com- menced to gather. Members of the Dominion Police distributed pro- grams of the ceremony in the Tower in order that the crowd might fol- low in their imagination, Great Throng At a quarter to three the Prime Minister of Great Britain and Mrs. Baldwin arrived to pay their tribute to the occasion by their presence. The whole setting was impressively ap- propriate to the historic ceremony in which the Prince had come to participate, Mr. King, in a few words, invited His Royal Highness to dedicate the altar. He spoke of what it meant, how the altar was a gilt from the mother country of Great Britain; how when the Book of Rememb- rance was finally deposited, it would contain the names of sixty thous- and Canadian dead. "In the name of the people of Canada," he said, "I set apart the altar of this chamber to receive and hold forever the Book of Rememb- rance to the glory of whose names are written therein that they may live for all generations." He raised the Union Jack and turned it back. And as he turned it, revealing beneath a book of cloth of red and white and gold, a shaft of sunlight streamed throu She windows and the words inscribed on the altar were clear and distinct. "My marks and scars I carry with me to witness for me that I have fought His battles Who will now be my Rewarder. So He passed over and all the trumpets sounded for Him on the other side." Solemn Moment At the pronouncement of the final word buglers commenced to sound "The Last Post," outside, the flag on the peace tower dipped and the .|Buard of hopor presented arms, Sig- --in fifteen minutes--in less time than formerly required for boiling alone--the delicious fruit flavor re- tained--pore natural in color and, better still, one-half more jam or jelly from the same amount of fruit, the CERTO way. TOURISTS WITNESS VESUVIUS ERUPT Permission Given to Ascend Slope by Director of Observatory Naples, August 4.--Three hund- red tourists witnessed Mount Ve- suvius in action during the night and Tuesday at Terzigno on the eastern slope of the volcano, but the display decreased in beauty and violence before morning. Professor Malladra, director of the Vesusvius Observatory, gave the tourists per- mission to ascend the slope late Monday afternoon. The scene from the eastern slope was different from that obtainable from Naples. He reiterated that there was no danger, Terzigno was calm, although it was the nearest village to the path of the lava which still was many kilometers distant. The lava flow travelled only 100 yards Sunday night and before it would be able to reach Terzigno it would have to fill and cross several gullies, sweep down a heavy protection wall and .pass several defensive trenches.
