This witness, who had confessed perpetrating a "Miss X" hoax in the case, the District Attorney tonight characterized as a she had told a "different story every "turncoat" and a "perjurer," saying day." "The McPherson case' is now in such a muddled state that a convic- tion is almost impossible and the charges probably will be with- drawn," Keyes said. He was unable to say when such a move would be taken. Roland Rich Woolley, for- merly the personal attorney of Mf. McPherson, and Mrs. Wiseman will be taken before the County Grand Jury tomorrow, the prosecutor said. SOUTHERN FLOODS AT RECORD HEIGHT May Reach Peak on Friday-- Motorists Drowned-- Many Made Homeless Nashville, Tenn., Dec. 29.--The Cumberland River, sweeping through Nashville in the most devastating flood in the city's history, spread over a wide territory today, forcing additional hundreds to join the gev- eral thousand homeless who had fled from the surging waters. The river, rising one-tenth of a foot an hour, had reached 55 feet late today, within three-tenths of a foot of the record stage of 55.3 feet in 1882. A stage of between 55.5 and 56 feet has been forecast by the Weather Bureau here, and is ex- pected to be reached Friday or Sat- urday. Three hundred moved families ' were from their homes today. 230 Blocks Affected The Police Department estimated 250 city blocks were affected by the backwaters. Between 4,000 and b,- 000 persons have been driven from their homes, principally in North and East Nashville. Simultaneously with the removal of the flood sufferers from their Wwater-sogged homes, relief agencies began functioning. The County Charities Committee, swamped with applications for food and clothing, today appealed for $10,000 addition- al relief funds. Train service on the Tennessee Central Railway out of Bere was vir- tually at a standstill, No estimate has been made of the probable property damage in the city a none can be closely approxi- mated 'until the waters have reced- ed. -- Improvement in the Southern flood situation was noted tonight after today's respite from rain, ex- cept in Tennessee and certain local- ities in Mississippi. Conditions More Acute Conditions in the Chattanooga vicinity along the Tennessee became more acute tonight as inhabitants awaited the flood crest. In Western Kentucky also the rise in the Cumberland has brought flood waters down upon Eddyville and Kuttawa. Low lands between Monticello and Burnside in South- ern Kentucky were 20 feet under water. Overflow waters of the Tombig- bee River in Mississippi, near Co- lumbus and Aberdeen, were with- drawing tonight..A Columbus report said that damage to highways, rail- roads and other properties would total hundreds of thousands of dol- lars, Three unidentified persons were drowned near Bentonia, Mass., to- day when their car overturned in flood waters. McLEESE Who is seeking re-election in Ward 4 BRAZILIAN TROOPS FIGHTING REBELS Separatist Movement Threat- ens in Rio Grande do Sul Provinces Beunos Aires, Dec. 30.--Continued guerilla warfare in four Brazilian prev- inces, resultingg in the recent battles between Federal troops and rebels iu Rie Grande do Sul, Province, may lead to a separatist movement. Since its annexation to Brazil from Uruguay, Brazil's neighbor to the south Rio Grande do Sul has been claimed by many discontented leaders as an inde- pendent province. It has been practi- cally in a state of seige for the last tcur years and the Government has been forced 'to suspend all constitu- tional guarantees. Recently the uprisings, usually in- volving a few hundred men at a time, have been most serious in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Caterina and Parana, the three southern provinces and in isolated sections of Mattogrosso, large central western province. In each case, as in the recent out- breaks in the three southern provinces, small contingents of revolutionists Lave fought under frequently unimpor- tant leaders. Brief Accounts Dispatch from Montivedeo, to the newspapers of Buenos Aires have con- tained only brief accounts of this civil warfare and no figures regarding the number killed are available. The regions chosen by the rebels for their battles usually have been iso- lated sections. Manifesotes issued from" the rebel camps indicate their desire that the present Brazilian Government be dis- missed and the constitution reform- ed. A secret vote in choosing reform- representatives is one of their demands, and they claim that this is the only means by which "legitimate represen- tations" may be possible. It is estimated that in the ten years of guerilla fighting 2,000 Brazilian army officers have been tried and many of them have been demoted. Revolutionists Free Buenos Aires, Dec. 30--Brazilian troops are in pursuit of revolutionists who have fled to Laureles, across the southern border into Uruguay, accord- ingto a message to the newspaper La Razon from its Montevideo correspon- dent. The entire garrison at Santa Anno with 300 men, has been emptied in crder to furnish a pursuit army. The Government troops have left for Cax- oeiras and expect to pursue the revolu- tionists who are under the leadership of Julio Bareios. The revolutionist force consists of 150 men. Reports from insurrectionist head- quarters say that the Government troops have suffered severe losses in recent battles. SEEK PYROMANIAC IN CITY OF OTTAWA City is Scoured for Firebug Believed Responsible for 'Series of Blazes Ottawa, Dec. 29..--Following a fire which caused $55,000 damage to the Keyes Hardware Supply Com- pany premises here last night, the entire Ottawa Police Force is scour- ing the city for a pyromaniac who, in the opinion of the city's Fire Chief, has been responsible for four blazes which have threatened the business section this month. The conflagrations, which have caused a total loss of close to $150,000, have all occurred on Parks and Wel- lington Streets, two of the Capital's main thoroughfares. Three of the fires were within a stone.throw of each other. Fire Chief . Robert Burnett, in pointing out today that the four fires each started from some myster- ious cause, asserted that this fact could only lead to the conclusion that a firebug was at large. 60 KILLED, 200 ARE WOUNDED I BRAZILIAN BATTLE Rebels and Federal Troops Are in Clash at Jefuery MARTIAL LAW Buenos Aires, Dec. 30--Dispatches from the Brazilian border to the news- paper La Prensa said 60 persons were killed and 200 wounded in a battle be- tween Brazilian rebels and = federal troops at Jefuery in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. The federals were reported to have numbered about 2000 and the rebels claimed about 3,000, some of the latter being armed with machine guns. Al- though the federals fell back before the rebels it was possible that the two groups soon would engage in a decisive battle. Martial Law Rio Grande do Sul has been under an approximation of martial law for four years. It is one of ofur rebellious areas in Brazil, the others being the States of Sante Catalina, Parana and Matto Grosso. Guerilla warfare goes on in these States almost all the time with small groups of rebels operating under independent leaders against whom the Government in recent years has increased its police force by 300 per cent. The region is heavily wooded and without the ordinary means of com- munication. Because of the indepen- dent character of the rebel groups and the difficulties of the terrain, decisive encounters for suppression of the re- bellion are difficult for the federal commanders to achieve. Rebel manifestoes, issued from time to time indicate that in general the rebellious ones desire dismissal of the present Government; reform of the constitution, including the adoption of the secret ballot; and 'legitimately elected' national representation. Since 1916 about 2,000 Brazilian army officers have been demoted or tried by court martial for alleged connection with rebellious plots. FIGHT IS PLANNED ACROSS ATLANTIC) Paris, Dec. 29.--The French Com- mercial Air Service, which is sald to be organizing a trans-Atlantic flight for next Spring, Paris 'to New York, is bitterly criticized for alleg- ed neglect in preparation, The Paris press, led by the Soir, while an- nouncing that Major Weiss has been selected to make the attempt, accuses the administration of iner- tia in a matter considered of great importance. Major Weiss contemplates mak- ing a 25,000-mile circuit, reaching New York via Dakar, Senegal and Buenos Aires, and returning from New York to Paris directly across the Atlantic, French experts differ as to whe- ther there is already in existence a plane capable of accomplishing the flight proposed by Weiss.. SEES NEW YORK AS CAVE MEN'S CITY London, Dec. 29.--Fears that the city .of New York may become a city of cave-dwellers were voiced by Sir Alfred Mond, British indus- trialist, in giving the American Chamber of Commerce the impres- s'ons he gathered on his recent visit to the United States. New sky- scrapers in New York with their terraced roofs, he declared, 'seem like the dwellings of the ancient Aztecs. I hope the day will never come when my friends in Wall Street wear bearskins for clothes, carry stone-age weapons and drag the'r stenographers by the hair through the narrow thoroughfares." A CORRECTION In the report of the death of Mr. Jas. W. Prova: was successful in the invention and manufacture of the modern type of hay fork, carrier and slings, and carried oa the manufacture of this 2 paratus for many years in Oshawa. FIND NEW -- 3 Montreal, Dec. 30.--Constable Hector Connelly, shot down during a gun bat- tle with two burglars while attempting to prevent their escape from the home of J. W. Hazlett, 336 Addington ave- nue, which they were looting late Christmas Eve, is making good pro- gress at the Western Hospital. New evidence came to light when a Notre Dame de Grace citizen informed the police that, following the shooting, he had seen two men enter a taxicab just near Sherbrooke and Addington avenue and drive rapidly away. The taxi driver is believed to have been lo- cated since and is due for interroga- tion at headquarters. The escape by taxi bears out the surmise by the injured constable that two men were in the house when he arrived with constable Dansercau. Connelly, according to information, was surprised as he waited in the yard for the coming of one of the pair. His attention was directed towards a rear right side window, when he was shot down from the left while totally un- aware of the presence of the second man. Constable Dansereau was at head- Guartess this morning reporting the occurrence to Chief Belanger. Dan- sereau remained at his post because Connelly told him to stay and watch the front entrance.
