Thursday, January 26, 1961 NORSHORE SENTINEL 5 CHURCH NEWS Nipigon The Jan. meeting of the Lutheran Bethany Sisters was held Friday, at the home of Mrs. T. Mikkola. Vicar Davis opened the meeting with a prayer and one hymn was sung. The president, Mrs. A. Loik, welcomed four new members to the group. Mrs. O. Lange read the minutes of the previous meeting. Mrs. T. Tuomaala gave the treasurer’s report. It was decided to have the annual skating party for the Sunday School children this month. Four ladies, Mes-dames A. Loik, A. Tuomaala, L. Mukala and O. Kaustinen, volunteered to complete plans for the event. A short but interesting play was enacted by members with the help of Mr. Davis entitled "Answering the Call for Willing Workers.†Bible discussion followed led by Vicar Davis. 'How did we get the Lutheran Church,’ was chosen as the topic for Feb. meeting which will be held on the 15th, at the home of Mrs. T. Tuomaala. Mrs. A. Tuomaala volunteered to clean the church during February. The meeting closed with the members joining in the Lord’s Prayer led by Mr. Davis, who also said Grace. Lunch was served by the hostess Mrs. T. Mikkola and co-hostess Mrs. O. Kaustinen. Group two of Nipigon United church W.A. was held on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the home of Mrs. Reg. Williams. In the absence of the convenor Mrs. Matchett, Mrs. Williams conducted the meeting. Devotions were’ led by Mrs. F. Polnicky. Mrs. Williams welcomed three new members to the group, Mrs. J. Sharpe, Mrs. M. Atkinson and Mrs. J. Kiessline. The group was asked to consider a new prpject. Wool was purchased for mittens and socks for the bazaar. The Bake Sale to be held Feb. 11 was approved. The ladies were also informed of the Superior Presbytry meeting to be held in Knox United church, Port Arthur on Feb. 15. Members were reminded of their membership dues. Mrs. Reg. Williams agreed to head the Mother’s Day Carnation committee. The group was asked to think of a new name for the church. The February meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Atkinson. Mrs. F. Wheeler will lead the devotions. Schreiber St John's Anglican Church Evening Group, Schreiber, met in the church basement, Tues. evening for their Annual Christmas Party. A delicious dinner was enjoyed by all, after which a business meeting took place. Mrs. J.D. Bryson took the chair for the election of officers. Harris rink, Canadian Legion #5, Port Arthur, with L. Hyde, vice; L. Hurrell, second; J. Dunhill, lead, The H. Redding rink, Beardmore, finished fourth with Wm. Sinclair, vice; N. Campbell, second and W. Boress, lead. In the third event, the A. Berry Rink, Geraldton, took first place with W. Ferguson vice; H. Hutsul, second; H. Campbell, lead. G. Power’s Rink, Beardmore placed second, with R. Nylund, vice; L. McKechnie, second; Y. Poirier, lead. T. Tansley’s Rink was in third place with A. Steinke, Vice: Wm. Ferring, second C. Doucette, lead. Stan Gordon’s rink from Red Rock placed fourth in the third event with C. Button, Vice; E. Kotzma second; H. Gagne, lead. In the fourth event, Bill Baker’s rink from Nipigon placed first with A. Kuzik’s rink, Beardmore, in second place, G. Harris, Rink, Port Arthur, in third place and O. Matte’s rink, Beardmore in fourth place. The Beardmore Branch of the Canadian Legion entertained the nineteen rinks and guests at a banquet at the Legion Hall on Saturday evening, prepared and served by wives of members and members of the Legion Auxiliary. Convener was Mrs. E. Jones, assisted by Mesdames P. Mocarski, B. Reiners, E. Michaud, A. Kuzik, J. O'Bneii, J. Banmau and G. Powers, and others. T. Tansley and J. Poirier introduced many of the guests, including Chas. Barnes, a charter member of the Canadian Legion: George Harris, President of Canadian Legion #5 Port Arthur, Ed. Kotzma, past president of the Red Rock Branch; Ken Eaton, President of the Long Lac Branch and George Pile, of Geraldton who has taken part in every Beardmore Legion bonspeil for the past ten years. A. Sparkes; secretary -Mrs. M. Slater; 1st vice pres. - Mrs G. Birch; treas. - Mrs. R. Inshaw; tea convenor - Mrs. S. Spicer. Plans were made for a card party and social evening for all women of the Church to be held Jan. 30. Admission for the evenings entertainment will be material, to be used for Bazaar articles. Following the business meeting the members played whist. Prizes were won by Mrs. A. Sparkes, Mrs. N. Grey and Mrs. A, Rigelsford. Mrs. S. Spicer acted as Santa Claus, distributing gifts to all. The evening ended with lunch. The C.G.I.T. of St. Andrew United Church, Schreiber, held their regular meeting with pres. B. Gordon presiding. The meeting was opened with the C.G.I.T. purpose. Minutes were read by secretary Judy D’Arcy. Treasurers report was given by Sharon Jarva. The roll call was answered with a 5£ collection.
