10 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday, January 26, 1961 BEARDMORE BRIEFS By Eleanor Nylund Ever wonder what the Indian name Na Na Wap Ki Da Wes Nung on the sign at each end of Beardmore Main Street means? I am informed it means "ridge of hills running around a campsite" in Ojibway. That’s really picturesque, isn’t it? However, I’m glad I don’t have to spell the Indian version every time I address a letter. In the Beardmore Ladies’ Curling Club, Stella Pleson’s Rink won five games in a row to capture the Carling Trophy. Vice-skip of the rink is Esther Kennedy, 2nd, Hazel Nylund, lead, Jeannette Mocarsky. Beardmore is sending a rink skipped by Mrs. Pleson to the Ladies, Northwestern Zone Play-downs in Terrace Bay, Jan. 31 week-end. Vice-skip will be Freda Stoughton, 2nd, Tookie Herlihy, lead, Jeannette Mocarsky. Mr. and Mrs. D. Sainsbury and family spent the weekend in the Lakehead. Muriel hoped to take in the skiing on Mount Baldy. A new student nurse, Nancy Funnell, arrived at the Beardmore Red Cross Hospital from Toronto Western Hospital on Jan. 16. She will be returning to Toronto in the middle of February. Wikto Juszczyk, injured in a fall at the Leitch Gold Mine, is a patient in Beardmore Red Cross Hospital. We are sorry to hear that Jack O’Brien is laid up with a sore hand, injured as he was unloading freight in the St. Lawrence Warehouse Yard. Jerry Smith, a nephew of Mrs. O’Brien, from Port Arthur, is subbing for Jack temporarily. Mrs. H. Bird is a patient in McKellar Hospital, will undergo a bone -grafting operation on Monday, Jan. 23. Miss Taffy Pleson celebrated her eighth birthday on Wednesday, Jan. 18 with several of her Little friends. Mrs. D.A. Kolesar of Rainy River, was a guest recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Sinclair of Leitch, Mr. Kolesar has been employed in the crusher at Leitch since the end of Nov. He is an old school chum of both Walter and Stan Sinclair. Mrs. Mary Hardy of Macdiarmid returned home from the Beardmore Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 19 with her 9 lb. 5 oz. son, the first baby born in the hospital in 1961. A hundred new books are available at the Beardmore Library, open every Wednesday evening until 8 p.m, Along with the organization of the new lodge, the installation of officers, initiation of new members the Loyal Order of Moose #1366 held its first bonspiel with 15 rinks taking part. Draw committee included V. Kennedy, A. Lappalainen and N. Kozak. Winner of the first event was the Nolet rink with R. Nolet, skip, Mrs. R. Seguin, third, V. Perzan, second, A. Tardif, lead. Runner-up in the first event was the Me Kechnie rink skipped by L. McKechnie with W. Poutanen, third, O. McKechnie, second, P. Savo, lead. Winner of the second event was the rink skipped by A. Lappalainen with Y. Poirier, third, M. Poutanen, second, Mrs. P. Poirier, lead. Runner up in the second event was the Xuzik rink skipped by Sandy Kuzik with Mrs. Wm. Harnden, third, L. Grover, second and P. Dyck lead. Anyone who would like to help with some sewing, urgently needed by Beardmore Red Cross Hospital, please contact Mrs. B. Gillis.
