The cost of the program is funded partly by the parents and partly by the Board and this year students at George O’Neill could cover the personal cost by selling cheese. Although this did not go over as well as hoped, Principal Nicki Morden-Cormier hopes that next year the students will see the advantage of this offer. The students skied at Mount Baldy, each Wednesday during the month of February. With the help this year of 2 outside sources, every student who wanted to take the skiing program was able to. The students are from Grades 5,6,7 and 8. Through a special Arts and Physical Health Education grant, Red Rock Public and George O’Neill went together to purchase a full set of helmets. Previously only those taking the snowboarding were required to wear a helmet, but this year, skiers also had to “wear-the-gear”. At the beginning of the program the students were fitted with equipment and checked that the helmets fit correctly; then they are given a skiing or snowboarding lesson, followed by free time on the hills. This year, despite some cold days, there was plenty of snow at Mount Baldy and all the runs were open to the students. For some in Grade 8, this would be their 4th year on the slopes and this life-long learning skill will stay with them as they become young adults and older adults. Many of the students take advantage of winter break and are able to go skiing and snowboarding with parents. Principal Morden-Cormier stated that the program fits in perfectly with the Ministry mandate on physical activities and now that the school has helmets, next year, the school will look into skating for the younger children. The school has been gathering good, used skates that could be used for those who do not have any but would like to learn. One good thing about the skating is the availability and the fact the use of the ice is free to any of the schools. Students over the last fifteen years front all local schools have enjoyed the skiing experience. In my opinion, the inertia that is present because of the hope of forestry and mining jobs should be overcome, and the complacency that has been the way of life needs to evolve. The inherent creativity that is so obviously abundant here has to be exploited so opportunities can be tapped and ideas acted upon. “The local economy is like a pail with holes in it.
