Council met in-camera, before the regular meeting, last week and during the meeting passed a resolution to accept the resignation of Levina Collins as the Economic Development Coordinator, an exit interview will take place, and to accept May 31 as the retirement date for the town engineer, Adam Taff. Council has been advertising for an Economic Development Officer for weeks and from the 6 applicants did not find anyone to hire. Although applicants were interviewed none were hired or even hired on a job trial. Now the position is being readvertised, only on the Internet and by word-of-mouth, with the deadline the end of February. Staff Sgt Brent Anderson gave a verbal report on the last quarter of 2008, choosing some of the items Council were interested in. Anyone interested can read the full report given to each Councilor and the administration. Items of interest included spending 1659 hours of service - down from the 2nd and 3rd quarters because of the different make-up of investigations; assaults resulting from liquor offences, both at the establishments and at homes which have prompted the officers to do “walkthroughs†of the liquor establishments in the full detachment area; thefts of pills that are becoming far too common; 13 motor vehicle accidents due to weather conditions and several break and enters, 2 of which go unsolved. Staffing numbers are down by about 5 due to paternal leave, LTD and suspension. There is no process in place to be able to replace an officer who is off for any reason. There was also a Crime Trend chart that showed occurrences over the past 4 years and how they compared - and 2007 looks like it rose in man, many areas. Total calls for service 2005-1058; 2006-1046; 2007-1268 Violent crime 2005- 44; 2006- 37; 2007- 39 Property crime 2005 - 97; 2006-70; 2007-111 Drugs 2005 - 10; 2006-3; 2007-9 Driving Offences 2005 - 10; 2006 - 17; 2007-10 False Alarms 2005 - 19;2006 - 36; 2007- 33 Calls between 4-8 am 2005-43; 2006-53; 2007 - 82 Approval was given to Public Works recommendations to hire Geo Technical Investigation at $16000 to do engineering testing in the downtown area, ie doing testing of the soil bed in the area of Front St. to see if the roadway could be moved or reworked and to sell the old low bed trailer for $5 to K. Paakkunainen. Council accepted the annual Water System Report which shows Nipigon has excellent water. Under Recreation approval was given to hire Darryl Hagman as a part time rink rat for the balance of the season; to accept the minutes of the Centennial Committee and to donate $100 to the Allan Hackner shoot-out being planned during the Men’s Curling bonspiel. It was noted that the planners are looking this year to change the flavor of the bonspiel, more on having fun and the curling than on winning prizes. Minutes were accepted from the Fire Department. Two members of the Blueberry Blast committee have requested help from the town with continuing the Blast without a sponsor. Without a sponsor there is the problem of insurance. Councilors debated the issue and suggested that more investigation be done to see if it would fit under the Recreation umbrella. An agreement will be signed with the Northern Communities Investment Readiness program to receive a grant up to $5000 for the Community Profile. Holly Sitch, from Community Adjustment, asked that the councilors find an opportunity to check over the Community Profile since the Community Committee of Adjustment group is finished at the end of March. Members from the 4 communities (Red Rock, Nipigon, Dorion and Lake Helen) have also been working to produce a Regional Marketing Plan for the area. It is hoped to have this finalized and in print by the end of March. A resolution was passed to accept the new Strategic Plan for the Township of Nipigon. The plan was prepared under the chairmanship of Councilor Dupuis with the major input from committees, council and residents. Information items included the District Municipal League meeting; minutes of the Quad Continued on Page 2 Red Rock’s New Years Baby Arrives! Jennifer Young, Kasey Young and Kevin Young.
