Photo submitted by A. Rowsell On Feb 7th, 2008, a Pastoral Care Workshop sponsored by the Alzheimer Society was held at the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital. The Public Educator for this workshop was Joy Nieminen, RN, HBScN, MPH from Thunder Bay. This workshop was well attended by various members of the Pastoral Care Committee, Clergy and volunteers. A lot of most helpful information was presented regarding the disease of Alzheimers and how we can better care for and relate to those suffering from this disease. Once again it was reinforced to us just how caring our community and our hospital is in treating and caring for these people and their families. This workshop gave us all a new insight into this disease and ways that it can be prevented and hope for those suffering or caring for patients with Alzheimers. We thank Joy for coming from Thunder Bay. We also thank the NDMH and staff and the Alzheimer Society for the delicious lunch provided for us. May we put into practice each day the things we learned to make each person we touch, feel worthwhile. People with Alzheimer’s disease are still spiritual beings with needs, feelings and memories. Let us show them the care and respect that they deserve. Let us do all we can by choosing healthy life styles which will help prevent the onset of this disease. This expression is inspired by the amount of bright, open space that constitutes the newly constructed George O’Neill Public School main entranceway. To the immediate right is another area that generates positive comments; the new library. This area has high ceilings, an elevated “stage” area with comfortable reading areas and huge windows (the natural light is tremendous!). When guests continue into the school, they find a brand new kitchen and a “Lunch Box” where students eat their snacks and lunch, but also where students, staff and parents gather to work together. You may have noticed the stair case that has been built on the playground side of the building; this is another bright spacious area. And the classrooms...all reconstructed with new floors, paint, cupboards and furniture. The overall combination of these areas generates an overwhelming “WOW” from all those who visit. We, the George O’Neill Public School Community (students, staff, parents and volunteers) would like to say a tremendous “THANK YOU” to the Superior-Greenstone District School Board for making this wonderful new facility a reality for us. We know that there is a positive relationship between student achievement and environment. We love all of our new spaces and will keep working hard to do our best! We would also like to thank all those who were involved in making our Grand Re-Opening such a great success. Thanks to the parents who donated baking and who attended the event! Thanks to Glena Clearwater and Patti MacAlpine for organizing the wonderful display photos; they were enjoyed by many and generated a great deal of reflection and conversation. Thank you to everyone who joined us on this day of celebration, from past staff members and students, to many members of the community and board. The students and staff worked very hard to make this event a success and all of their time and efforts are appreciated as well! It is wonderful to see so many people coming together to celebrate a positive event in our community! George O’Neill Public School is a facility where people of all ages are learning; it begins with the tiny babies attending The Family Place and continues through adulthood with the students of Contact North.
