Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. Dear Editor, I felt compelled to respond to your invitation for letters. My husband and I moved here last May from southern Ontario. We expected to encounter many changes and maybe even a small sense of loneliness or isolation but that has not happened. From a visit in March last year, we knew the people in the Anglican Church were kind and loving , but the rest of the community has also received us warmly. Currently, Thunder Bay features advertising, “talking proud about their cityâ€...certainly that could be said about Nipigon and Red Rock as well. The scenery and natural resources are phenomenal but the real treasure is you, the people. You are friendly, generous and kind. I have encountered first-rate service and good variety at the local business, good food in the restaurants and my experience with the health care system at the clinic; the hospital Fisheries and Oceans Canada Peches et Oceans Canada Protecting Freshwater Fish and the Places They Live Northern Brook Lamprey (Ontario populations) Fisheries and Oceans Canada is currently considering whether the Northern Brook Lamprey should be protected under the federal Species at Risk Act. In Ontario, this eel-like fish is found in tributaries to lakes Superior, Huron, Erie and Nipissing, as well as the Ottawa River. The use of lampricide to control the invasive Sea Lamprey has reduced populations of Northern Brook Lamprey around the Great Lakes, where the two fishes coexist. Protecting the Northern Brook Lamprey under the Species at Risk Act will help ensure its continued survival, but may affect fishers, boaters, First Nations, municipal governments and others. You are invited to comment on whether the Northern Brook Lamprey should be protected by federal legislation. Thankfully we have not needed to avail the services of the ambulance of fire department. The tourist information booth was incredibly helpful in assisting me to prepare for family and friends when they came for a visit. The Post Office is multi-functional, the place to collect mail, meet and greet friends and neighbours and experience great service even when it is busy. The Gazette keeps us informed and the coverage of the area is impressive. We really enjoyed the community events this past year. The Blueberry Blast was great and the Fall Fishing Festival was really excellent. We enjoyed meeting the people who sailed into the marina at the sailboat regatta. The museum is superb. We have toured it several times and we especially the Finnish memorabilia and the delicious treats at the “Little Christmasâ€. The Christmas (holiday) Train was a new experience for us and it was amazing. The Christmas Parade of Lights was wonderful; the kind support of Allen Koistinen who generously loaned us a trailer, and Gord Walter who offered us the use of a bay in his car wash to decorate the float in warmth enabled St. Mary’s to be part of the Christmas Parade of Lights. Because I am new here, I didn’t know we needed to register to be part of the parade, but Linda Harbinson kindly came to my rescue and assured a place for us. A very sincere thank you to Allen, Gord and Linda. The youth of the community grace us with energy and enthusiasm. What fun it is to watch hockey games at the local arena. The Legion always seems to be a hub of activity, and the Rotary Club is a real asset to the community, but especially the youth. The other clergy in Nipigon and Dorion have been most accepting and friendly. I especially appreciate the ecumenicalism that exists between our various denominations and the way the parishioners of the churches support the activities of their brothers and sisters in Christ. The real soul of this community is its people. Robert and I have been made to feel as if we belong. It is a privilege to learn about your history and to hear your sacred stories. For many people, rock is a symbol of God’s strength and power, and as Christians we know that we are ambassadors of Christ. We have experienced both here. The light of Christ is evident in your graciousness and the strength in which you carry on in the face of adversity and tragedy speaks to us of people who draw strength from God. I find a real sense of peace as I gaze at Doghead Mountain knowing that God is surely in this place.
