Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 Nipigon-Red Rock Gazette Page 3 Nipigon/Schreiber OPP Weekend Report During the weekend of January 25th to 28th 2008, Nipigon/Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) received 30 calls for service and issued 17 Provincial Offence, Notices. Police investigated one motor vehicle collision. On January 26th, 2008, two Nipigon O.P.P. officers observed a female driving northbound on Front Street. The vehicle pulled in to the Mac’s parking lot and the officers spoke with the female after she exited the store. The 45-year-old female from Red Rock was subsequently arrested and charged with Adult Failure to Provide Breath Sample contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada after she refused to provide a breath sample when requested by police. She was released with a court date in Nipigon March 11th, 2008. On January 26th, the Nipigon O.P.P. were requested to attend a residence on First Street in Nipigon regarding a female who had been located on scene with vital signs absent. Police attended and confirmed the 35-year-old female from Lake Helen deceased. A post-mortem was conducted in Thunder Bay, January 26th. Foul play is not suspected, however, investigation into the matter is still ongoing. On the evening of January 26th, Schreiber O.P.P. members were advised by Thunder Bay Communication Center of a theft of gas incident originating in the Town of Marathon. Descriptions of the vehicle and male driver involved in the incident were broadcast, and the red Ford pickup was subsequently observed by a Schreiber officer approximately 30 km. east of Terrace Bay. The vehicle was stopped by police and the 19-year-old male driver from Quebec was subsequently charged with Theft Under, Obstruct/Resist Peace Officer, Possession of a Controlled Substance x 2, and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle. The male was held for a show cause hearing January 27th, 2008. On January 27th, two break and enters were reported in the Town of Red Rock. A break and enter was attempted at the Quik Mart on Sails Street, but entry was not gained. The front door of the business was kicked in and the glass shattered, but no items stolen. Later that same day, a break and enter to a garage/work shop on Steele Avenue in Red Rock was also reported. The sus-pect(s) in this incident had entered the garage overnight and had stolen approximately 20 bottles of beer. Entry was gained through a side door window whereby the glass was broken and the door subsequently unlocked. Investigation subsequently revealed that the garage/work shop had been broken into twice, although entry was only gained once. In relation to the break and enters, police arrested and charged two males (one 17-year-old and one 20-year-old) from Red Rock with Break and Enter x 3. They have a court date in Nipigon February 26th. DANGEROUS ICE CONDITIONS Be advised that as a result of high water levels on Lake Nipigon, the Ontario Power Generation has been running the Nipigon River at approximately 500 cms (500 cubic metres per second) since the Fall, with plans to bump up the flow to 566 cms next week. These river flows are above the seasonal norms and combined with the forecasted milder weather, may result in thinner than usual ice thickness on both Jessie Lake and Lake Helen. The O.P.P. wish to remind you to remain cautious if you are out on either of these lakes.
