OPP Winter Safety Tips continued Continued front Page 8 the person to shore or where you are certain the ice is thick and signal for help. When snowmobiling, before you head out, make sure you are informative of your arrival time, make sure the snowmobile is in working order and has no potential problems, and carry first aid and survival kits. While you are out on the trail, only ride within your capabilities and use the trails whenever and wherever you can. At night, wear reflective clothing and be cautious of visibility, both on your part and for others who may not see you. NEVER, NEVER ride on railway tracks, alone or without proper clothing and especially not without a helmet! Children aging from 5-9 account for 40% of all sledding injuries in Canada. Over 20% of these injuries involve concussions, internal injuries or broken bones. Most injuries are caused by colliding with an object or from being thrown from the sled. Teach your child that when they are tobogganing or sledding, to make sure the hill they choose has plenty of room to stop at the bottom and to always sled during daylight or on a hill that is well lit during the evening. Always sit or kneel facing forward and keep your hands, arms and legs inside the sled. Remember to tuck in strings, scarves and long toques. Always wait until the path is clear before starting down the hill, as well as getting out of the way quickly when you are at the bottom, going back up on the side where no one is sliding. Wearing a helmet while sledding is always the best choice of safety, and children under five should not toboggan alone. When you are tobogganing or sledding, avoid hills that have too many obstacles, like trees, bumps, a building nearby, and even jumps. Hills that are steep and icy can be very unsafe, as well as inner tubes, crazy carpets, flying saucers, garbage bags and cardboard boxes, as they can be very difficult to control. Do not overcrowd the toboggan with too many riders, and do not try to stop the toboggan with your hands and feet if you lose control. If you have to get off in a hurry, roll to the side. Remember these safety tips while your out enjoying the crisp winter fun, and please remind your children to be safe! SAFETY FIRST! IF YOU DRINK, DON’T DRIVE. PLAY IT SAFE AND ARRIVE ALIVE. Snowbank Removal There is enough snow now for the Nipigon township crews to get out and take off the excess from the built up snowbanks. The past few winters have not allowed for this practice due to the low snow accumulation. But not this year! Glena Clearwater Photo
