8 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday, January 19, 1961 ARNOLD JORGENSON JUST TO MUCH FRUSTRATES NIPIGON FLYERS AGAIN There is this fellow called Arnold Jorgenson by his team-mates and many more unprintable names by his opponents. He guards goal for Red Rock Royals in the NSHL and to say he guards it well is like saying that Fort Knox is a fairly-well fortified structure. Arnold was called a few of the old names and a few. new ones by the frustrated Nipigon Flyers Sunday afternoon in Red Rock as 671 fans, the largest crowd of the season, saw Jorgie time and time again thwart the Flyer forwards as the Royals won a dramatic 5-4 victory. Jorgie stopped little Alex Legacy four times in the last period alone on clear shots, throwing in a tidy sum of 19 saves in the second period and 35 for the entire game. He was the difference as he has been sc many times this year and every year he has filled the Royal net. Red Rock thus stayed close to the Terrace Bay Superiors who split their weekend action with Marathon. The Royals trail by two points but are six points up on Nipigon and Marathon, tied for third with six points. The Royals come to Nipigon Thursday night fo action while the Flyers were scheduled to play Terrace Tuesday. Nipigon checker Moe Kelso had Neal Seagris hamstrung most of the game and Neal was finally moved back to defence. But the rest of the Royal forwards were at their best in one of the finest games of the season to date. Especially impressive was Harvey Dunville who had two goals including the winner while working on a line with Brian Morgan and 'Finn’ Willman, the Royals best. Morgan also had a goal and an assist while Neil Seagris and Larry LeSarge had the others. Herman Mannila and George Swan led the Flyer attack as per usual with Herman scoring two goals and adding one assist, his 11 th point in three games. Swan and Clyde Mannila scored the others. GOAL DUST: Harvey Dunville, especially in the second period, was the best player on the ice, a j fast change from his form of a few weeks ago. He was finally benched for a good reason. His suspenders i broke and he almost lost his pants! Neal Seagris couldn’t get untracked but he helps himself little by playing around with the puck in his own end. The two Seagris boys, George and Neal have done this for so long that its funny either Larry Dunville or Roger Harvey have not slapped their wrists hard. It’s poor hockey...very poor hockey. Vic Dahl and Paul Baxter, the two top Flyer scorers last year, still haven’t shown anything. What are they waiting for? Maybe they both need a line change. Ed Atwell should be a forward. Coach Staples will probably try him there Thursday night if Jerry Carilsle is back. He hurt his knee. Flyers met with arena hoard Friday over paying rent for practices. They will continue to do so but there will be an exhibition game later in the year with all the profits going to the club. They may also appeal to council for a grant.. Four Way Tie in Scoring Race NSHL It’s a three-way tie for first place in the North Shore Hockey league scoring race after the weekend action. Marvin Osmar and Dave Whalen, both of Terrace Bay gained ground on Neil Seagris in last week’s action, Whalen picked up seven points and Osmar six. Seagris had just one point Sunday and two last Tuesday against Terrace. He has one game in hand however. All have 24 points. Herman Mannila had another big game for Nipigon Flyers and now rates as the player with the best chance to catch the leaders. He has 19 points in just eight games, two games less than Bob Amado of Terrace tied with him in second place. Both have 19 points, five off pace. Red Rock leads the penalty parade with 128 minutes. Terrace is second on 104 minutes. Marathon has 98 and Nipigon trails with 80. Most penalized player is Chester Gallant of Red Rock with 39 minutes followed closely, as usual, by Ron Kapitan of Marathon. Ron has 38 minutes. Thursday night Red Rock visits Nipigon. Weekend action has Nipigon hosting Terrace Saturday and then travelling to the Superior rink Sunday. Red Rock has a double-header in Marathon. A defenceman by trade, Billy was called on to don the pads for the Superio early in the first period Sunday against Marathon when regular goalie Don Dobson was injured. Billy not only won the game for the Bays but gave the Merks an acute case of embarrassment by applying the whitewash brush to make his debut perfect. Terrace won the game 4-1 the lone Merk goal coming when Dobson suffered a dislocated shoulder in trying for a loose puck. Ron Ka-itan scored that one. Maurice Osmar tied it up in the second period and then Marv Osmar, Bob Adamo and Maurice again scored in the final period as the Sups settled down to dominate completely. The Merks, the afternoon previous, had surprised everyone by downing the league favorites 7-4 on Marathon ice. The Superior supporters’ spirits were lowered greatly by Dobson’s injury coming on top of the first loss but their fears were calmed by Pytyck’s fine play and a stout defensive showing by the Sups as a whole. Overlooked in the back-slapping over Pvtyck’s heroics; however, was the the fact that Dobson, the team’s regular goalie over the past few seasons, will be lost for most of the remainder of the schedule. The Sups faired poorly with out him recently when he was hospitalized. Whether Sup goalie Weaver can handle the job remains to be seen. Possibly Pytyck may have won himself a job on his first try! ICE SPRAY: The teams played Saturday afternoon in Marathon as an experiment. With NHL hockey on Saturday night the crowds have been poor. Marathon goals Saturday came from Pete Amadeo, moved up front, Bunny Le Blanc With two. Al Lanteigne, Bob Ferguson, Ken Nutbrownand Arnie Steeves. Terrace scorers were Marv Osmar, naturally, Dave Whalen, Joe Tookenay and Bob Adamo...Ed Bolan was back with the Merks Saturday and his presence made the difference. Lanteigne and Brassard dueled in the last period. Nipigon Notes The staff of the Hudson Bay store enjoyed a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. Underwood, Hudson St. on Saturday evening. Games and dancing followed by a delicious hot lunch made the evening a great success. The staff bade farewell to Pat Martell who left at the weekend for a new position in Winnipeg. 15 young people gathered at the Maynard home to help Florence Maynard celebrate her 10th birthday on Jan. 14. Bingo, a peanut scramble and pin-the-tail on the donkey were played. Hot dogs, pop and birthday cake were enjoyed by the following guests; Lynn Maynard, Ruth Dainio, Merry Lee Nyman, Gloria, Terry, Debbie Koch, Lynn Sharp, Margaret Whent, Beverley Henrikson, Helen Ronkainen, Linda Kovisto, Linda and Louise Routhier, Arlene Benson and Janet Maki. Ole Stein Jr. spent some time in St. Joseph’s hospital last week returning home on on Sunday evening. Mrs. Sharon Maki, wife of Nipigon Flyer forward Ray Maki, spent the week-end in town. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Berube became proud parents on Monday morning when their 8 lb. 4 oz. son was born. Another Nipigon resident who has been on the sick list is Clarence Joa who has been off work for some time on doctor’s orders. Hope you will soon be feeling fit, Clarence. On Jan. 19 the installation of officers for the Elks lodge, Nipigon, will take place. Janet MacLeod is now out of hospital and back to school though she has her leg in a cast and will be on crutches for some time. Following the mixed curling Saturday evening, a farewell party was held for Ron and Wilma Swail in the Curling Club rooms. Wilma was presented with a lovely living room clock and Ron a wallet from the club members. The Swails will be leaving shortly to make their home in Port Arthur where Ron has been transferred with the Royal Bank. Nipigon’s loss is Port Arthur Curling Clubs gain. A going away party was also held on Friday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Silta honoring the Swails. Eleven couples attended and presented them with an oil painting of a local scene by Mrs. W. Nedelscheff. The Swails will be missed by their Nipigon friends and we wish them happiness in their new home. Mrs. Georgia Daniher is a patient in Nipigon Memorial Hospital. LETTERS The Editor, Norshore Sentinel Dear Sir: With your permission I would like the following explanation of schedule of hours at the Nipigon Post Office inserted in your publication at your earliest convenience. As Christmas Day 1960 and New Years Day 1961 fell on Sunday, Post Offices were granted Monday, Dec. 26, 1960 and Monday, Jan. 2, 1961, as holidays on which days there was to be, no wicket service; lobby was to be closed all day and mails were not to be worked, outgoing mail was to be dispatched as usual. (Contrary to the above privilege, the Nipigon Post Office lobby was open from 7.00 pm to 9.30 pm on the above mentioned days and some mail was sorted.) Regarding the weekly half day closing, when the merchants of Nipigon decided to remain closed all day Monday instead of Wednesday, the staff of the Nipigon Post Office, after careful consideration, felt that it would be to the betterment of public service to observe our half day closing on Monday afternoon rather than Wednesday. Permission was obtained for the above from the District Office at North Bay and out into effect on Monday Dec. 5, 1960. The following is the approved weekly schedule of the Nipigon Post Office.
