Tuesday, December 20, 1 960 NORSHORE SENTINEL 3 JUST 96 YEARS YOUNG, ENJOYS BIRTHDAY PARTY By Anna Larocque Celebrating her 96th birthday on Sunday Nov. 27, was a big day for Mrs. Ellen Edmond of Dorion. Thinking it was going to be another quiet day Mrs.. Edmonds was greeted by a big surprise at noon when two of her relatives showed up with their families each bringing a complete dinner. With the dinner all prepared this left Mrs. Edmond sitting back and enjoying it with someone to wait on her. She even admitted she didn’t have to do a dish. She received three birthday cakes and had to wait until later in the day to sample them. Dropping in to bring Mrs. Edmond birthday wishes were Mr. and Mrs. V. Belair, Mrs. S. Bannister and Mr. and Mrs. B. McGugan all of Port Arthur and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Boyce and son, Mr. and Mrs. J. Goodfellow of Fort William. Friends and relatives in Dorion also attended. Mrs. Edmond felt pretty proud of herself that she blew all the candles out on her cake with one blow. She says, "There weren’t 96 because there wasn’t enough room for that many.” Mrs. Edmond spent one of her birthdays in hospital and she said even there they made her a cake. Mrs. Ellen Edmond was born in Enterprize, Ont. in 1863- She was married in Centreville, Ont. in 1895 to the late John Edmond. She said she went to church for the wedding in a covered wagon drawn by horses. The day was a lovely sunny one so she didn’t mind the ride. Now she said the bride wouldn’t think of such a thing. Mrs. Edmond is the mother of two sons, Edwin and Michael both of Dorion. She has eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren Mrs. Edmond came to Dorion in 1901. Then it wasn’t what it now. She first lived on Bishop’s Trail as it was called then. She came to Hurkett by train and then had to go back up the truck by hand car to where her husband was waiting for her and the boys with the horses and wagon. 'Til always remember that trip”, Says Mrs. Edmond, "I; had such a headache and the lumberwagon made so much noiseâ€"and that bush trail!!” Mrs. Edmond spent one winter by herself with her boys as her husband was called away to work and she remembers how the wolves would come around her house when they went to bed at night. Each night, before retiring they would put boxes against the door and then they would all feel safe. "Oh”, she says "Times were hard then but we were always happy.” Mrs. Edmond was a member of the former Dorion Women’s Institute for many years and also a member of the Catholic Women’s League which was in Dorion many years ago. Mrs. Edmond lives with her son Mike now. She still gets, around and prepares his meals and does up the dishes. She says it takes her a long time to get around but is thankful she is not bedridden. Once a! week she has Mrs. Irene McArthur come in to do her washing and baking. Another thing she looks forward to every month is a visit from her priest Father R. Carey of Red Rock. Mrs. Edmond has been in-hospital many times but says never for anything serious! just a rest. She doesn’t care for the restrictions they give her though and is always anxious for a "rest” at home. "Grandma” Edmonds loves company and says she could talk and laugh with someone all day. Now that her eyesight is failing she cannot spend her time reading or sewing so she dearly loves a visit to help hass the time. Mrs. Edmonds has one wish and that is that she will never have to return to hospital. To live a long, healthy life Mrs. Edmonds said one has to work hard and remember always to eat three good meals a day. PRESENTS CHEQUE Honored Royal Lady Sara Kivisto presents Mrs. C.M.
