10 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday, December 15, 1960 BARATTA SMILING NOW DESPITE RECORD ..AND TERRACE DAY Marathon Mercuries cross sticks with Terrace Bay Superiors Thursday night ana, despite two pre-season losses to the mighty Sups, Merk coach Tony Baratta remains as cool as a ludefist. It’s not that Tony feels his Merks will chase the Superiors out of the rink. In fact he doesn't really expect a victory. But Tony can’t help but be optimistic about this North Shore Hockey league season after a weekend trip to Red Rock...and the most recent loss to the Sups. The Merks skated themselves into condition against the Royals Saturday night and Sunday, losing 5â€"2 in the first game and then scoring three unanswered goals in the final period Sunday for a 5â€"3 victory. Aside from a little goal tending troubles Saturday night they looked every bit the part of defending champions despite their poor conditioning. The Merks lost the second and final game of the Soughton Cup pre-season series to the Bays last week but the reason for Tony's optimism is that the Bays big line of Marv Osmar-Wink Whalen and Maurice Osmar was held scoreless. Tony feels that once his boys get in shape to skate with the younger imprecise Sups second line they’ll be good competition for everybody's favorite for the league title. Royals, meanwhile, were losing their first game in seven starts under new coach Roger Harvey. Leading 3â€"2 going into the final period,, the Royals defence, especially Paul Fournier and Wally Krawschuk, took a rest for the rest of the game to make things rough or goal tender Arnold Jorâ€" Noel Camire was the bright light for Red Rock, scoring three goals Saturday night. Finn Willman and Brian Morgan had the others. Sunday it was Neil Seagris and Gordie Marathon divided its scoring evenly. Rookie Arnie Steeves and Bunny LeBlanc scored Saturday and Bob Ferguson, Danny Moon, LeBlanc, Al Lanteigne and Johnny Charyna GOAL DUST: Royals were counting heavily on a good start. Unless a few of their players take off the pounds tney won’t get it. Harvey Dunville was responsible for one goal in the third period and Paul Fournier, who played well Fournier, who played well Saturday, was responsible for another. Coach Harvey was leaving his lines out too long to help the Merk cause. Merks loaded with ie Steeves, Terry Cooper and Kent Nutbrown. All three are going to be a big help. And what is the league going to do for rookie awards this year with the smart trio from Marathon, Ron Shock and | Bobby - Adamo from Terrace and the two Pineau boys from the Royals to name a few, all gun for the award? It’s the best rookie crop in years, a good sign for the league. Crowds small: just over 400 Sunday. Merks report Ed Bolan will be back in the new year. Business man Floyd Romano is down to 170 pounds but probably won’t get time to play hockey this year. Billy DeLuca has retired. Al Zahondik had trouble Saturday night but performed well Sunday. Bolan will help the defence. It was ganging up in front of Zahondik something they won’t be able to do aâ€" gainst the Sups. NIPIGON FIRST TO FEEL SUPERIORS NEW MUSCLES As expected, Terrace Bay Superiors walloped Nipigon Flyers 10-3 Sunday afternoon in the opening game of the North Snore Hockey league for both teams. The team picked to win the league in a walkaway the Bays showed their usual scoring punch plus a new balance tnat was just too much for the Flyers and new goal tender Gerry Campbell. They led 3â€"1 after one period and 6â€"2 for the start of the third. The score, however, was slightly flattering to the Bays who had their trouble with the Flyer front lines especially the Herman Manilla, George Swan, George Beadman trio which scored two of the three goals. Flyers showed a 's?akness in goal plus a lack of conditioning that allowed the big score. The Superiors youthful second line provided the scoring punch with rookies Bob Adamo and high school centre Ron Shock scoring two goals and an assistapiece. Karl Kolody had two goals while Marvin Osmar, Dave Whalen, Maurice Osmar and Rick Polhill had others. Swan, Manilla and Alex Legacy had the Flyer goals. Both Swan and Legacy scored on breakaways. RAMBLING: Flyers showed a weakness in goal and it is yet to be seen if new goaler Gerry Campbell was just nervous or what. George Ruth is waiting in the wings. Paul Baxter out with a sore back and Dean Tones? missed the game. ‘Shock' is a clever centreman that would fit. well in the junior league He works well with Adamo and Joe Tookenay. New defenceman Amby LeBlanc will need a little time before he impresses. Tookenay had three assists. Flyers working hard all week. They now have ice.
