3 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday, April 20, 1961 Words in me WIND by CHUCK McOUAT, IT WAS LATE in the evening. The typewriter was clacking loudly and the ring of the phone was almost missed. The voice on the other end of the line blurted out: "You want something to write about? I'll give you something to write about... if you got the guts. Write something about the way some people don't seem to give one hell about their teenage Kids. Especially the girls. Maybe I'm old fashioned but you'd never see 'one of my kids staying out until all hours of the night in one of those coffee shops. And how kids of 16 and 17 get liquor and beer is beyond me. What kind of people would give it to them? Probably the same kind that don't give a damn when their daughters and sons get home anyway. I guess it's just our modern world but as far as I'm concerned, it’s no wonder so many young girls get in trouble today. Nobody seems to care... oh well... what's the use. You probably wouldn't even say anything anyway...." click. EVER WONDER why certain names persist throughout the years while others never seem to catch on? For instance, wl\y would .Black, White, Green, Grey and Brown be used as surnames and not Yellow, Purple, Blue or Red? You hear people called Bull, ‘Lamb, Hart and Fox but never Sheep, Horse, Dog or Cat? It's the same with the names of birds and fish. Some of them are common, others you never hear. Anyone know why? QUICK FACT: The word berserk originated with Viking warriors.. Those who fought with frenzied abandon were known as berserkers' a name referring to their bear coats (berserk). MARIAN JORDON, better known as the sharp-tongued by , softhearted Molly of the Fibber McGee and Molly Radio Show, died of cancer recently, a week before her 63rd birthday. She and Jim Jordan, her husband, amused millions in the pre-TV era with their gentle humor as the daffy couple who lived in the mythical town of Wistful Vista. Her quavery rebuke, 't'aint funny McGee!' and the fantastically cluttered closet which McGee opened at least once a show were sure laughs no matter how often they were repeated. Her death stirs memories of that golden era before TV when radio was fine entertainment instead of the juke box it is today. It brings back thoughts of such programs as Edward G. Robinson in 'Big Town', the never-to-be-missed Lux Radio Theatre, Jack Benny Show, Fred Allan Show, Allan Young. Duffy's Tavern, The Green Hornet, The Shadow, L for Lanky, Bulldog Drummond, Gildersleeve, Henry Aldrich, Blondie and Dagwood. Share the Wealth, the drama of the Friday night fights before vou found out that Don Dumphy was throwing in a few dozen punches of his own to color things up.... we could go on and on. Radio was popular, because of the thing that separates men from animals... 'imagination'. You could picture in your mind a thousand different forms the Shadow might take. You could picture what , Duffy's* Tavern might look like or what the Fibber McGee's house or what they themselves might look like. Each person would picked differently in his own mind. Has television taken the place of this? We think not. What do you think? A CHILD’S WORLD: you just dust me off?" ‘Do you have to wash me mommy? Can't COFFEE GOSSIP: Those are usually the kind that settle right down after marriage... Ask for news of perfect crib hands and thou shalt receive! Subscriber Walter Martin, manager of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. port William, drew a perfect 29-hand last week while in a friendly game with local representative, Allan Hannula. Witnesses to the perfect hand were George Wayd of Sudbury, Bill Godin of Port Arthur and Mrs. Allan Hannula, Opal. HEARD FROM a reader, female this time, who has it all figured our. Men get more colds than women because they are conceited. Men don't wear hats, says she, because they don't like to cover up their wavy locks. It starts in their teens, she continued. "All you have to do it look at the way the teenage boys spend hours with their hair. I should know. I have a teenage son. He wouldn't think of wearing a hat because it would flatten his nicely-combed hair down." Hmmm... THE WORLD isn't such a bad.- place after all. The headlines always tell us of the black side it seems but then you will read a small filler in an inside page that will restore your faith in humanity. Like the case of the Fredericton contractor who tendered too low a bid to construct a school. The people of the town w_ent out and raised $500 for him when they learned that it hadn't made any profit on the job. Don't know whether it had anything to do with the exciting NHL final series or not but we've noticed quite a few new television aerials spring up in our neck of the woods. Congratulations to Olga and Les Culbert who kept up the tradition of the OPP Nipigon force this past week with the addition of a baby boy to their family, a brother for Dean. The Dorigo's are now stationed in Beardmore.
