A norshore sentinel Thursday, April 20, 196l CAMERON FALLS CALLING COMMUNITY CLUB PLANS SPRING DANCE APRIL 28 by Marian Lake Now that the Russians have conquered space maybe we can quit talking about the weather and let them do something about it. We would suggest first of all cleaning up all the snow clouds and substituting some of those old fashioned April Showers - if "we gotta have rain.” The executive of the Community Club met April 12 in the Hall. Seven members attended. Ty Pesola - chairman of the dance committee - announced that a Spring Dance is being planned for April 28. A lovely basket of fresh spring flowers will be presented as the door prize and there will also be several feature dances for prizes. Admittance is 75 cents per person. Music for dancing will be supplied by every big name band on records. The committee is also working on some entertainment numbers for the evening. We don't suppose it would be tattling to say that they are shaping up to be very interesting - and that's putting it mildly. The committee is issuing an invitation to everyone in Nipigon and Red Rock and the surrounding district to come out and enjoy themselves Cameron-style. We feel safe in assuring you that the road is in quite good condition. Mervin Enders, who is the chairman of the Men's Sports, reported that the men's baseball team will need new bats and balls this season. Lome Corlette and Ty Pesola are hoping to find two other men to help out with the boy's baseball team. The committee are hoping to have the ball field cleaned up a bit for the new season and perhaps get a new back stop erected. Jane Haig - chairman of the pool committee - reported that the swimming instructor has been hired. She is Miss Lorna Watson of Port William. Miss Watson has agreed to hold classes for the four and five year olds this year as well as the immediate preschoolers if so desired. Myrtle Pybus - chairman of the entertainment committee reported that the Film Party held for the children of the colony during Easter Week was a complete success both from the financial and children's points of view. It is hoped to repeat the effort once a month during school months. Sure signs of Spring - the kids find the ball that disappeared last fall and the men rediscover their fishing tackle. The Conservation Club at their regular meeting Monday, April 10 finalized plans for their annual Pish Derby which begins and ends with the trout season -April 29 to September 15. All Hydro employees and their immediate families who are in possession of a Derby ticket are eligible to enter. These tickets are available from any of the club members. Weighing-in stations are located at Cameron Palls plant, Swanson's Grocery Store in Nipigon, Aquasabon G.S. in Terrace Bay and Laine's Grocery in Port Arthur. There will also be a weighing-in depot in Geraldton but its location is as yet unannounced. Trophies and prizes will be awarded in the fall at the Sportsman's Dance. The Black-fly Committee - an organization dedicated to the hope of defeating that hungry little varmint in the colony - and chaired by that valiant warrior Ed McKinnon, met this week in the hall to draw up battle lines and plans of attack. Treatment of the streams will begin as soon of the temperature of the water reaches a suitable level. Fogging - will begin when the blackfly population in the colony reaches a suitable level, DORION-HURKETT HAPPENINGS ADD TO HURKETT RINK by Anna Larocque The Hurkett rink committee met last Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs.Theresia Holtz-man. George Coulombe was appointed chairman for the coming year. It was decided that two partitions in the rink shack will be removed and 16 feet will be added to the present shack. As soon as the weather has cleared, up and the boards start to dry up a preserver will be painted on the boards. It was decided to write a letter to put insurance on the building. A former resident of Dorion, Donald Moffitt, visited many of his friends last week. Mr. and Mrs. Leschuck spent the week-end at the Lakehead with relatives. The Wandell twins Beverly and Dianne celebrated their 12 birthday Sunday, April 9th. Attending the birthday party were: Gloria Swanson, Patsy Porterfield, Linda Jardine, Carol and Sheryl Stenlund. Winners of the games were: Linda Jardine, Patsy Porterfield and Beverly Wandell. Lunch was served by Mrs. Wandell, and Mrs. Mary Kay. Mrs. Lillian Banantyne, Steven and Linda left Sunday by TCA for Regina where they will reside. They have been spending a holiday with Mrs. Banantyne's parents Mr. and Mrs. Prank Thompson in Hurkett. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Art Paquette, Mrs. McDevitt all of Port Arthur,, were recent visitors at the Simon Dupuis home. Mr. and Mrs. George Bryan of Murillo- were week-end visitors with Mrs. Pehr. RED ROCK ENTRY A group of Red Rock swimmers will be travelling to the Port William Y.M.C.A. Thursday, to engage in the Northwestern Ontario Junior Swimming Championships. While the local swimmers have no opportunity to swim during the winter season, it is expected that some of the swimmers will qualify to return to Port William for the finals Friday. Red Rock swimmers will be competing against those who may practice during the entire winter season. But it is felt the experience of the competition will be valuable to the young people participating. The phone lines will soon be busy in these two communities shortly. Many of the folks already have the telephones in their homes just waiting for the day the switch is turned on. Mr. and Mrs. Garth Windsor and family have returned to Lindsay after spending a couple weeks with Mrs. O. Morency. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Jorgenson have returned home after spending a few days in Winnipeg.
