8 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday 16, 1961 RED ROCK RAMBLINGS by Mrs. F. Cowan The Recreation Centre had its busiest day since its opening on Nov. 29, 1957, this Saturday. The day began with four flyweight hockey teams competing in the morning followed by two hockey games with Cameron Falls. First thing in the afternoon was public skating followed by a hockey game between Nipigon-Red Rock High School against Geraldton High School. Geraldton winning 11-6. Meanwhile, in the auditorium, the Belles and Beaus square Dance Club prepared for the Annual Jamboree which was later attended by over 200 dancers from all the District Clubs. The Curling Club was an active spot as well with Junior curling followed by the Ladies Rose Bowl Play-offs in the afternoon and evening. Final winner in the Rose Bowl Competition was the Red Evans rink. The North Shore Hockey league game between Marathon Mercuries and Red Rock Royals was held in the evening. Winner of course was Red Rock. In this one day, guests were received from practically all over the district, some 1200 people going in and out of the building all day to emphasize again that Recreation facilities have become an important part in the lives of people in Red Rock and the district. In addition to hockey games in Red Rock, a Peewee team travelled to Nipigon to play and another to Beardmore to compete there. Results of the games: Red Rock 5 - Nipigon 0. Red Rock 2-Beardmore 0. The Minor Hockey League schedule has now been completed and semi-finals in all divisions will begin this week. The Fish and Game Club held their meeting in the Club House with D. Bianco in the chair. It was reported that memberships were on sale and mentioned that memberships must be purchased before June 1 to be eligible for the Annual Fish Contest. It was decided to allow the Ojibway Troop of Boy Scouts the use of the Clubhouse and grounds on Tuesday nights of each week on a trial basis. Plans were finalized for the fourth Annual Fred AAron Memorial trophy contest also the annual Conservation Contest. The Trophy Contest this year, open to all pupils in grades, 6, 7, and 8 of our two schools, consists of 150 - 200word essay on Conservation, as it applies to Fish and Wildlife and questionnaires on ‘Safe Gun Handling’; ‘Bush and Water Safety and ‘Game Laws’ pertaining to our district. The Conservation Poster is open to all pupils in both schools, judging to be done by . rooms. The Prizes and Trophy will be awarded March 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Public School Auditorium. Of further interest to the pupils, Posters and Essays from grades 6, 7, 8, will be selected by the teachers for entry into a Zone wide competition early in April. Color travel and fishing slides loaned by L. Orr and R. Smith; and shown by L. Orr were enjoyed by all. Meeting adjourned after lunch served by B. Lysnes. The Women of the United Church Association will hold a Bake Sale in Chappies Store at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 24. Members are asked to please turn in their bake goods in time so they may be marked for prices. At the last meeting of the Women’s Association of the United Church it was decided that proceeds received at the Bake Sale to be held on Mar 29 be donated to the Firemen’s Ambulance Fund. It was reported by Mrs. N. Currie that articles of clothing, etc. had been forwarded to the Women’s Mission Society for distribution. The President, Mrs. B. Kirby, outlined the recent Presbytery Women’s Association Conference in Wesley United Church, Fort William, which was attended by Mrs. Kirby, Mrs. M. Lysnes and Mrs. N. Currie. The Annual Spring Tea will be held on Saturday, May 6, with the following convening the event: Kitchen, N. Currie; Tea Table etc., A. Dawes, J. Marks; Work Table, V. Paja, E. Hargrave; Bake Table, F. Rendell, M. Lysnes. At the close of the meeting lunch was served by Mesdames: H. Jacobson, F. Rendell and C. Murdock. Rhodes has been on the sick list for almost two weeks now and friends were sorry to hear that she had to be rushed back to McKellar hospital following her operation two weekends ago. Helen is fortunate to have her mother, Mrs. Honka from Horne Payne, Ont., mind the youngsters while she is away but we’re sure the whole family will be glad to have her home again. Maybe Gerry will have his French up to date by that time... what say Gerry? A speedy recovery Helen! The reason? she intends to make the trip to New York with her daughter Marlene Ilijow. Marlene is leading in the News Chronicle sponsored contest and should she win, she is allowed to take along a female companion. There was a tremendous turnout at the Square Dance Jamboree held at Red Rock Saturday evening. It is a shame there isn’t more interest shown in this activity in Nipigon! The Bocal Association for Girl Guides and Brownies met recently at the home of Mrs. Mary Banning. Plans were made for a Bake Sale, to be held at.
