8 NORSHORE SENTINEL Thursday, February 9, 1961 CAMERON FAILS CALLING by Marion Lake Well, the big weekend of curling is over and all that’s left to do is polish and dust the prizes. And no one was left out on that score either. Not only was the bonspiel novel in its make-up but also in the fact that not one participant went home empty-handed. The idea behind the whole weekend "to break any world recoms but to have fun’’ as Eleanor Whittle so aptly put it. Most of the curlers were either complete novices or knowledgeable veterans of last year’s bonspiel. Only the skips of each team were what might be termed experienced curlers. For this reason we believe this yearly Cameron Bonspiel is unique in the chapters of curling history at least in this area. With only the skips regular curlers, the teams turned out on the ice with a fairly even chance of winning. ; The bonspiel as a strictly local affair and originated by four of our curling addicts, made its debut last year, It was met with such enthusiasm that it was decided to to make it an annual event - and event it is! This year 18 rinks were entered - a total of 72 Hydro workers. Entry fee is six dollars a rink which covers costs. A good many prizes were donated this year by local businessmen for which we are truly grateful. A good deal of appreciation and thanks is due to George and Eleanore Whittle, the girls in the office and Don Haig. It was through their efforts that the weekend i came into being, The closing night of the bonspiel, George Whittle, who organized the event, was presented with a gift of an [electric razor in recognition of his efforts. Now you can shave better electrically George! The Cameron Hospital Auxiliary met Wednesday night at the home or June Bishop. Ten members present. Because most of of those present were new members, the nominations and elections were put off until the next meeting. We hope to hold the next meeting in the Hall with coffee doughnuts, and guest speakers. More about that later. The canteen has now a fresh supply of cigarettes in we are happy to announce. Take heed all you frustrated, one-brand smokers. The champion electrical maintenance broomball team met the utility maintenance crew last week and chalked up another win. Final score 4-1. The Utility crew actually seemed to be made up of many different departments for the game but even the combination couldn’t give them the strength to outwit and out maneuver the fast-brooming electrical crew. It is reported that the victors are trying to arrange a game with the operators and the line crew. Grades three, four and five in Mr. Holliday’s room went on a bottle drive last week to raise money for an encyclopedia for their room. Every house was canvassed for bottles by the toboggan towing youngsters and when all the two cents were counted up, they were some $20.00 richer. The books will be forthcoming shortly. We weren’t able to get the bowling scores last week and this week’s scores proves that one week can make a difference. Bea Keown still holds her own with high triple and high single in the women’s division. There is a change in the men’s, however. High single is now Pat Jones with 330 and high triple is Ray Paju with 798. Here are the team standings: in first place is Mervin Enders team with 76, second Penti Rintala 69, third Tom Boyle 62, fourth Anne By-lund 60, fifth Andy Davidson 57, sixth Pat Jones 55, seventh Joe Campbell 49 and eighth Bea Keown 45.
