95 MARCH 1931 -- DIXON PENCIL COMPANY ARRIVES IN NEWMARKET FROM JERSEY CITY,NEW JERSEY, U.S.A. In March 1931 Dixon Pencil Company opened a new manufacturing branch in. the building on Huron Street, formerly owned by the Cane Family, known to the Newmarket residents, as Canes Factory. With. the arrival of . Dixon Pencil Company came Mr.Cabanis. to organize the new branch and factory. Also from New Jersey we record a Mr. J.> H. Schermerhorn, who was. President of Joseph Dixon Company of Jersey City, U.S.A. Mr. James Law was appointed General Manager of the Newmarket plant also.with Mr. Frank Courtney as --~ Secretary--Treasurer.> Miss Barbara Fairy was Dixon's first office Secretary. |Mr. Calvert assumed the position of Accountant and Mr. Dave Parker completed the office staff in 1931. Mr. Howard Cane remained on staff as Production Manager. Mr. George Whyle was the Factory | Foreman. In 1931 Dixon Pencil had two Sales Representatives Mr. Barkley Hulse managed the Eastern Division, while Mr. Marmadale Otty was Sales Manager of the Western Canadian Provinces. Pencils, coloured pencils, and bridge pencils were manufactured in the Newmarket Plant. These commodities _ were sold wholesale to large stationery outlets such as Grand and Toy, as well as to many smaller stationery stores in Canada. Approximately thirty to forty employees were on the payroll., Working hours were from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday inclusive, with Saturday being a work day on many occasions in.--order to fill many . extra orders. A real sucgcess story to begin with in the year 19351.
