Lucy Vaileau said Schools can use these healthy standards to make the healthy choice the easy choice she said adding many schools in the public and Catholic boards are doing this already The public health unity offers a nutrition tool kit to interested schools guiding them stepbystep in the implementation of nutrition education and daily physical activ ity to make the move to become a healthy school Students are engaged by participating in the cre ation of school policy and often lead many activities to help peers learn including poster contests fruit and veggie taste tests and morning announcements I dont think we give the stu dents enough credit she said They want the healthy choice and they want to be involved in the decision making Grade Sacred Heart Catholic Secondary School student Alison thinks it is a step the students will welcome with open arms She admits some students may still venture off school prop erty to eat unhealthy food but it would keep her and her friends in the school at lunch 1 wouldnt have to go out to get sushi or a salad she said 1 would eat at trie school more often if had healthier choices During the four years of high school is when she and her peers will develop habits that will cany on for the rest of their lives she said Healthy eating should be one of those habits Our school president Chris Callahan has already made some changes she said He went to the cafeteria and asked that they offer us more choice Now whole wheat buns veggie platters and more healthy choices are being sold to students Although the move may not help every stu dents at least the schools will be trying a Utile harder she said Items being slashed from the menu include those with more than 10 grams of fat and milligrams of sodium French fries and ener gy drinks wont make the cut but whole grain pizza lowfat potato chips and even lean beef hamburg ers served on a whole wheat bun with fresh lettuce and tomatoes wilL The rules dont apply to students who brown bag it for lunch or to students who choose to purchase food off school property at a local restaurant The new standard applies to food sold within the schools caf eteria vending machines school events including bake sales and pizza lunches held on school prop erty The schools will be allowed to choose days a year when the rules dont apply but it means more coordination for the schools that
