Silver will do for Crone BY JOHN CUDMORE jcudmoreyrmg com Pulled that one out of the fire And the next fancy step for ice dancers Vanessa Crone and Paul will be the one they perform as Canadian Olympians in Vancouver Buoyed by a solid but not flawless free dance program Crone and Poirier claimed the second ice dance berth available for the Vancouver Games at stake Saturday night at 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Cham pionships at the John Centre in Lon don After we got off the ice the first thought I had was that Id lost the Olympic spot The couples hopes appeared in jeopardy following Fridays original dance segment in which they slipped into third place slightly behind Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje However Crone who grew up in Aurora and Unionville resident Poirier erased a two- tenths of a point deficit to edge Weaver and Poje the same team they edged out for silver at the 2009 finals for second place behind Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir But not without anxious moments and a few tears In the end Crone and Poirier finished with a 18470 score to edge Weaver and Poje 18440 Nothing has sunk in yet but Im sure it will in the next few days Crone said Monday afternoon after returning to her Scarborough home following a day of briefing with Skate Canada in London We didnt skate clean but it was enough to get the points Actually Crone had a slight touchdown on a twizzle that might have proved lethal to their Olympic hopes Fortunately the cou ples performance overall scored well enough to make it a moot point in the end After we got off the ice the first thought I had was that Id lost the Olympic spot explained the 19yearold Crone We werent sure about what was going to happen I was beating myself up crying in the back I was disappointed in myself I dont know what happened and it took a split second to realize it it was just so fast We didnt watch Weaver and Poje so it wasnt until our teammates came rushing up to us that we knew It was so exciting Playing before a supportive home audi ence Virtue and Moir were easy winners with a Canadian record 22195 total including a free dance performance valued at 10782 But that was to be expected The real fight was for the second Canadian berth for next months Games Theyre such good competitors and skat ers its easy to feed off what they do and the crowd she said of Virtue and Moir They really are role models for us Crone suggested the couple achieved its goal heading into the national champion ships Even if we didnt get the spot overall we managed to achieve what we came to do she said And we got the reaction from the crowd we were looking for Our main goal was to get our presentation marks up and thats what we did TRAVEL SHOW to escape the everyday Torontos mimkiHMim 2 DAYS ONLY JANUARY 23 24
