A New market- Aurora Wednesday January 11 1984 OUR OPINION Time for action on snow plow shortage Newmarket has been caught short by this winters snows It takes six trucks with snow- plows to keep the towns streets cleaned and sanded efficiently during winter blizzards but this year the town has been left with only four of the vehicles A handicapped works department has been coping valiantly but the service being provided is noticeably not up to its usual standard The buck must stop with the town councils engineering com mittee and its chairman Regional Councillor Henry Vanden Bergh The committee decided to trade in the works departments two oldest trucks last June and turned them over to a local dealer on the understanding that their replacements would be delivered in of time for use during the winter Months passed without any sign of the new trucks and evidently during this time Mr Bergh and his committee just sat on their hands Questions raised at council before Christmas brought assurances that the trucks were on their way but here we are in mid- January and still the works department is operating with only twothirds of its fleet Last Mon days council meeting brought no more firm response from those responsible than has been elicited in the past What happens if another of the towns overworked truck fleet should break down during a heavy storm Operating with only half its equipment the works department would take double the time it should to plow the towns streets and sand its slippery intersections and hills Slippery slush filled roads cause accidents Its time the engineering committee got off its hands and got to the bottom of this matter Newmarket cant afford to be caught short of equipment if a really big winter blizzard strikes YOUR OPINION Pity the poor doctor I really fell sorry for you before OHI P When the average wage in Canada was 7500 you fellows were making an average of Yes it was really tough The average Canadian at that time would only visit you whenever he really needed you and thai might be once every two years Then the government came out with the great OH IP plan All of a sudden everybody got health conscious From a slight sniffle to a sore behind they all started running to the doctors shop That meant that the fellow who only went once every two years went three times a year with his sniffles and his carbuncles But oh I felt so sorry for the doctors when this happened They had to work three times as hard But just wait a minute They were making three times as much money and behold if that wasnt enough they had to add between and 100 onto the OH IP fee Dear Doctor arent you getting just a little bit greedy When I say my little prayers tonight on my little knees beside my little bed Im going pray that the government will come in with some scheme that will triple mv business and I will promise God if my prayers are answered I will not get greedy and add to the triple windfall Honest person returned going to die but Im not going to die he said He was not a criminal nor some mentally distraught person He was an esteemed colleague and personal friend and I was momentarily taken aback by his exclamation What did my friend mean by such a forthright statement Was he looking for some acceptable theological response regarding how a Christian should die Was he denying his own mortality Was he ex pressing the human races general horror faced by death Or was he me as a churchman to help define more clearly how believers in Christ should respond when death strikes a Christian and how to do good grieving by those who remain Knowing my friend as I do I think it was this last Let me share a little background that led up to this statement This dramatic experience took place over lunch with my wife and me My friend had been inquiring about our family My wife and I shared about the deaths of two of our family members both of whom had died from cancer within a sevenmonth period The church had supported us during these crises Through the gospel of Christ the church had been positive and supportive ANTICIPATION My mother was one of these two her preparation was so complete and con torting that I was able to talk openly with her about her coming death One day sitting alone with her I asked Mom what do you expect to take place this coming summer She replied Green grass And then what I asked Til see God And then Ill Jesus As we talked together she spoke of her anticipation of seeing my father again as well as other Christians who had preceded her in death Let me tell you that although death causes deep sorrow in the hearts of loving Christians my mothers funeral service was one of victory and supportive joy The other family member was my brotherinlaw After his death we learned that his wife had talked to him while he was in coma During his dying hours she con tinued to express her personal feelings and love for him and their life together She was able to release him to his heavenly Father and to encourage him in his expectation of seeing his parents and brothers who had died in the Christian faith There is clinical evidence to indicate that comatose patients frequently hear and understand what is being said to them Shortly before his death he called together a number of the men of his church and shared with them his testimony He stressed how much they should involve themselves in the work of God He was already in the palliative stage but was making the effort to tell his brothers in Christ that it pays to serve Jesus The Scriptures and the church do have something positive to say about dying with victory But there is also a clarion message to those who do not have dying faith One exciting incident I recall from my hospital ministry is of helping a man find dying grace When I met this man already palliative I saw a human being for whom Christ had died filled with awesome fear Gently and over a few days time I presented the Gospel to him In a simple childlike way he exercised faith in Christ The gloom left his eyes His voice became strong He wanted to know more about Jesus He asked about heaven and what to expect He wanted to be baptized in his new found faith Even though his body was heavily sedated his faith was not for I watched his spirit grow in the few weeks that preceded his death One example of his turnaround we call it repentance was that after I had prayed one day with him he spontaneously offered this simple prayer God please forgive me for all the times I have pre judged people Is it possible that God has given the church a great message that everyone needs to hear Christian and nonbeliever alike Oh yes for it is a message of hope in Christ It is a message of assurance believers have that all is well with the souls of real believers Believers who have walked by faith for many years sing such hymns as Blessed Assurance Jesus is Mine Oh what a foretaste of Glory Divine We can also lead nonbelievers to the cross where they respond positively to the song Just as I am without one plea but that Thy blood was shed for me HAVE NO FEAR Sometimes I will want to say to my good friend Yes dear colleague I am going to die some day but as a believer I do not have to fear death itself The dying process may be fearful and full of anxiety I may grieve over having to leave my dear ones behind but I shall not fear being physically dead The cry of Job rings out in our sophisticated age I know that my redeemer liveth and though skinworms destroy this flesh yet with mine eyes shall I see God and behold not another Jude writing to Christians closed his text with a marvellous statement of fact He wrote Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy to the only wise God our Saviour be glory and majesty dominion and power both now and ever Amen Jesus will keep us during life and during the dying process We can walk through the valley of the shadow of death and fear no evil for he is with us Jude also says that Jesus will present his people to the Father Imagine Some day I might be presented to someearthly person of importance But to have Jesus present me to the Father faultless covered by the righteousness of Christ and to do it with exceeding joy thats almost in comprehensible My friend may have been looking to see how well we were grieving He may even have been wanting to look at my theology But I am sure that he with us is not afraid of the ghost of death Thanks be unto God who us the victory Ball games need bouncers The beer at the ball park issue is I i the news Willis Blair the head of the Ontario Liquor Licence Board is recommending changes to the laws governing the sale of those overpriced plastic cups of foam that pass for beer I cant remember when so much fuss was caused over tepid foamy water priced at just under a cup Ontario must be the laughing stock of such civilized countries as Germany Only in Ontario would Mr Blair recommend that customers at Blue Jay and Argonaut games be restricted to two cups at a time when such a rule already exists But of course people put the two down and go and get two more Even at that rate though one would have to make about trips and be independently wealthy to be able to get drunk at a ball game GAMES DANGEROUS Im not suggesting there arent drunks at the games Argo games m particular have become dangerous places to take a genteel young lady But the problem is not one of too much beer being sold at the games Mr Blair suggests beer sales be cutoff earlier at football games and at baseball doubleheaders If that cuts down on the incidence of drunkeness Ill personally buy Mr Blair two cups of that awful stuff The problem lies with rowdies most of them young And having witnessed a goodly number of Argo and Blue Jay games both prior to and following theadvent of beer being sold I can attest that the number of rowdy drunks has only increased slightly Were talking about hooligans Man of them get a glow on long before reaching Exhibition Stadium They come because its another place to drink They used to bring their own booze hidden under coats They still do many of them You see more drunks at Argo and Blue Jay games largelv because it is an in thing among hooligans Thev are not football or baseball fans Fans come to watch the game Hooligans come to drink carry on and often to get into a brawl SAME WITH SOCCER Its the same syndrome on a smaller scsle as the soccer hooligans who have disgraced that game overseas If one reaches the game with almost a full head of steam it doesnt take much of the watery legal beer being sold to increase that level But even if beer were outlawed altogether you wouldnt see any noticeable change in the drunk hooligan level In fact the pleasure of enjoying a beer or two during a ball game is significantly reduced by having to stand in line to buy two then disrupt your seatmates moving in and out of the aisle That doesnt bother hooligans who spend most of their time commuting be tween the beer counter the washroom and just carousing in and around the stadium What is needed are more bouncers The idiots should be thrown out of the park In the majority of bars and taverns across Ontario where the level of drunkeness is much higher than at a ball game you dont find too much holliganism BOUNCERS NEEDED Or if you do its not for long Because some large and able gentleman is soon on the scene to evict such clods I realize its a much tougher task in a stadium but I also know the Blue Jays and the Argos who must pay for their own security can afford it And it take a season or two of being bounced the ball park to get the message across Then a baseball or football fan could enjoy a beer or two along with his hot dog or popcorn And he could get it in his seat just like he does at Olympic Stadium in Mon- SERVING YORK COUNTY SINCE 1852 BARRY WALLACE JOHf GRIFFITHS
