In the grain Mold can develop resulting In musty grain and nutritive value goes down with insect damage Drying and sometimes cleaning is the only answer for damp grain If there is an insect problem fumigation is necessary Weevils will work right through winter if they are not stopped are difficult to use but the alternative is badly spoiled grain Probably the best livestock tog in recent years his been better feeding with grain rations worked out to match up properly with hay and silage Testing of the roughages have made this possible with some help from computers Dairy feeding is a good example We can now send samples of feed a dairyman has on hand to our lab and get back a grain mixture to go with It that satisfy precisely his herd for protein energy and minerals This is the best time to set up rations as herds are switching completely to stored feeds Mid winter or next spring is really too late And it is quite possible that con centrate costs could be cut this winter because a lot of our hay should have protein levels well above normal We were on the knuckles last week for being unconcerned about the possibility of a flood in the Holland Marsh This Is not true Of course we are concerned r There is a small charge for feed testing but working out the ration Is a free service What we were trying to say is that It is no use to talk about it and not do anything about It This innocent bystander has a lot of faith In the people who are supposed to watchdog the flood protection facilities of the Holland Marsh Wo have engineers a drainage committee with grower representatives and the local municipal council study the drainage system dikes canals river etc We are sure that the job can be left to them to do everything humanly Possible to keep the from flooding The dike surrounding the Marsh has some weak spols thats for sure particularly the section near the north pumping station There seems to be movement in that area This section of the dike appears to be sinking and the bog north of the dike Is piling up Can something be done here It has always been a difficult section from the day the Marsh was drained It is actually a huge dam in the Schomberg river A break here would cer tainly create a huge tidal wave and toss of human lives could be a possibility Water either the lack of it or an excess con tinues to be the main topic of conversation these days First we had the drought and dust storms in May and June Since July we have measured mm of rain at the Muck Research Station Areas north of the station easily received to mm more Normal rainfall for this period is mm During the days when it is not raining we have cloudy conditions Maltha Valk Muck Research Station air only introduced when humidity gets too Excellent results have been obtained with this kind of artificial curing The onions never develop neck rot and the skin color is excellent which is keeping things very wet We have had poor drying conditions for many days now and growers are very worried about all their crops How will they keep will they rot In the field What wilt be the keeping quality of the onions lying on the field or even in pallet boxes outside waiting for sun and wind Some growers are seriously thinking about setting up drying systems for onions in the storage For a good many years onion producers In Holland and England where the climate is usually unfavorable for drying onions outdoors have dried them ar tificially Most of these are designed to blow heated outside air through a pile of onions feet high Bin or pallet box drying storages are now becoming more popular system gives the grower a greater flexibility with keeping varieties or onions with different quality or size separate from each other Since energy costs are rising year by year improvements have been made In recent years whereby the hot air is reclrculatedf using this hot air over and over again The trick In all this to keep a close eye on the temperature and relative humidity of the outside air and the storage This means accurate ther mometer and hygrometers which are required to give the storage operator the knowledge on when to open up vents to start or stop exhaust fans heaters etc Some of this in formation can be put on paper but a lot of the success of such a system depends on experlUe A few factaheets on onion drying artificial curing onions neck rot in onions and homemade hygrometers are available from our office j 4 I 4 Hit- PI vuu OCA I KNOW NUUiH r A escape i XAM0OQSAlSa StfJVXCALL 4f ft is f v rf iCv HAT It 5 ffiK system of devices that produces an audible alarm signal tor purpose of notifying the occupants of presence of lire so they can evacuate their home Fire produces smoke and deadly gases which can overcome occupants while they sleep Further dense smoke reduces visibility To warn against a tire this requires at least one smoke detector located between a family asleep and the rest of their residence However design of each house will determine the location and number detectors required Basic prolection is recommended as to be Installed one detector on each level including basement The Fire Department recommends smoke detectors the products combustion type tested and listed by a recognlied laboratory- example Underwriters Laboratory Canada i If batlerles are used shall be replaced in accordance the recom mendations the manufacturer Testing and examination of smoke detectors shall be as recommended by manufacturer To have a good level Fire In the home in addition to the smoke detectors there should be a program by Individuals to minimize lire hazards and have and practice an escape plan NEWMARKET FIRE DEPARTMENT I f IS TP i you own i6ii ill L v fc- rf a V
