that we had a good stock of everything Including art as adarnahV tomatoes for the winter However we had just begun Next item on the list was meat We still had a fair supply of beef from a side we had bought but that wasnt enough for mo financial disaster hanging Chickens I startled everybody by saying decided on an immediate Chickens and rabbits At the last word my 17-year- wan not was an ex- old drives to the local store for wouldnt mind killing a few so long as he didnt know unnecessary anyway and worst them too well meat chicken carcasses CHICKEN HOUSE BUILT going this year Were going to use what they used to use in the old days WOOD BURNER Noone to want to argue my logic so construed their silence as agreement There werecomments when I landed home the following Saturday in a borrowed truck with a very- large old woodstove purchased at a local auction 1 if until they walked out and gave to the garbage days have always held a strong wife and I so we looked around to atart pioneering the modern way our first attraction tip until now patch but this year as if planted a good half acre of corn beet potatoes in fact Just about We had not realised how good this was and when it came to harvest now it was obvious we were ndous crop all ready at once uncle were staying with us at the time taroVworking English stock they were them but that we prepare and So it was that all of us including children took on the task of for the winter picked pounds and pounds of peas beans com in fact Peeling washing cutting Ing Even the leaves off the beet the onslaught We were told that ous when boiled rather like spinach they went came the beautiful heads hard and firm hie It will be all soggy I said shred it scald it for two it Instead of cooking it we steam it and it wont be soggy We had an old unused shed attached to the garage so nothing daunted some quick labor with odd pieces of chicken wire and wood and behold a chicken house A visit to a local poultry farm resulted in broilers being transported in the back of our stationwagon and duly deposited in their new if temporary home The idea of the rabbits was abandoned Although very partial to rabbit meat my daughter was right I could not see myself slaughtering young rabbits and enjoying the resultant stews and pies In fact I was already feeling squeamish at the thought of killing and cleaning SO chickens However they had to be fattened up first so that job could wait In the meantime I had decided that electricity was virtually unnecessary although I was definitely ruled when it came to the beloved TV set so out of the cellar came my collection of rusty but trusty old oil- lamps which were placed in strategic positions all over the house I shall only dwell lightly on the bruised shins and swollen toes which we acquired within a very short period Suffice it to say that our eyesight did not improve but we did develop a remarkable knack for knowing what or who it was we banged into without actually seeing the object cats and dogs soon learned to avoid us Undeterred by these trivial inconveniences turned my attention to the heating bills With winter starting staring us in the face I glared at last years cancelled cheques to the oil company ridiculous bawled at everybody No comment Well its not iJi J fc An antique my wife murmured Itll look nice on the lawn my bright daughter Well we can always sell It for scrap metal the practical son All this sailed over my head and only served to make me more determined In The cookstove was unloaded and deposited in the back mud room where I spend four days with cloth steel wool and stove enamel result to me I anyway was miraculous Bright and shiny it was ready for work It didnt take my family too long to clean up my mess and the repair work to the wall where I put the ducts in wasnt that bad I was sure the sagging floor due to the extra weight would be alright A tour of the barnyard with wheelbarrow and not too enthusiastic son produced a variety of fuel which was duly dumped in the old shed and together with a tremendous pile which lasted about three weeks of elm logs I reckoned we could heat for a whole year The new heating and cooking plant was initiated the next day and my coughing remarks on how nice the smell of burning wood was received mutterings which I did not attempt to Interpret We toasted the success at least it worked of the project with home made lemonade My son who had obviously been studying the situation very seriously crowned the activities by remarking gleefully Gee Dad if you buy a pig we can smoke our own hams HOOKED UP PIPES I ignored this while announcing that I would connect pipes all round the downstairs rooms and cut some vents in the ceilings to allow the hot air to cir culate Good idea darling my wife muttered Not in my room DARLING definitely from my daughter Anyway 1 assured them all that the system would straighten itself out and it was simply a matter of adjusting What next The chickens by this time were growing fat on the excessive amount of grain by kind- hearted family poured Into them because they looked hungry so 1 decided it was high lime they returned the favor and became potential meals Ten favored specimens were being kept to be eggproducers at which point I would mention that homeproduced eggs by our methods work out at However getting back to the luckless others we arranged with two neighboring farm couples who knew all about It to do the deed the following Satur day I shall not go into all the gory details but with my daughter safely Out of the way we ended up several shades greener In ah unbelievable mess with ap proximately half a ton of feathers and giblets and chicken carcasses more or less plucked and ready for the freezer Our friends ate a hearty supper but somehow we werent hungry j i Wesley llftchlnson takes five by an old buggy gracing the backyard of his home Corncob pipes and the em time to smoke them are two of the values of the
