The Era Newmarket Aurora Keswick Out Wed June AS Queens Park Report by Bill Hodgson SCHOOL BOARDTEACHER CONTRACT TALKS Firefighters negotiator heads trustee team The June provincial election has come and gone results are known by one and all Barring some unforeseen changes in the results of two recounts in Hamilton Centre and Durham East the party standing in the Ontario Legislature should remain the way they are now The closest recount involves the Liberal and candidates in Hamilton Centre whereby a difference could tie the with the Liberals in terms of total seats for the position of Official Opposition party Or the Liberals will continue as the Official Opposition as occurred on election night By the time you read this report the 31st Parliament will have started There are many new faces in all three parties but I am particularly happy to see the return of my old friends and colleagues John Turner the former PC for Peterborough Ed Havrot former for Temiskaming and Gord Walker former for London North and now the new Member for London South They had previously served with me in the Parliament from to 1975 This first session of the new Parliament will in all likelihood run for about a maximum of three weeks The basic items on the agenda include the creation of the new Northern Affairs Ministry and the passage of enabling legislation for certain budget proposals May I offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who supported me at the polls on June It was gratifying to have the support and confidence of so many people throughout the riding of York North During the next term I will continue to do the best job humanly possible for all the people in our riding regardless of potitical affiliation If any person has a personal problem or concern please feel free to contact the riding office or my Queens Park Office at 9654813 enjoyed the last election campaign for many reasons of which most outstanding was the quality of the candidates for the Liberals and the Both Jim Wilson and Ian Scott conducted effective and clean campaigns For that they are to be commended The beneficiaries were the voters and the overall process By BOB MARTIN Era News Editor RICHMOND HDLL For a novice school board trustee Bill Monroe is right in the thick of things Although hes serving his first year on the board the Richmond Hill representative heads the trustee team that is currently negotiating contracts with the secondary and elementary school teachers It wasnt just fate that the Richmond Hill firefighter was named to the team and selected to chair it from the time he was first elected last fall he set his sights on becoming both a member and chairman of the team I didnt make any promises he recalled last week What he did do was display an eagerness that had already become apparent in his role with the Richmond Hill Firefighters Association A member of the department for only three years he headed the firefighters group during his initial year with the department Last year he chaired the negotiations team as a member of the labor side rather than the management post hes currently serving on the board team and this year as president of the association he served on the firefighters association negotiations team that completed its talks just before school board contract meetings began That the school board negotiations post isnt the most prestigious for a trustee became apparent earlier this year when two members resigned from the team King trustees Coburn and Dorothy Zajac resigned Mrs Coburn after being cleared of possible conflict of interest by a county court judge and Mrs following a dispute over membership in a trustees association At the outset the committee was short- handed noted Mr Monroe We had six we were one short to begin with he explained The team itself decided that the minimum number theyd need present to negotiate properly would be three With only four members Mr Monroe trustee Bob separate school representative John Stephens and Whitchurch StouffWtle trustee Harry Bowes it means you have to attend a lot of meetings said Mr Monroe At the start cf talks with the teachers the board team held negotiation sessions three times a week And we had work meetings added Mr Monroe just meetings of our own committee when we werent working with two groups Since then the Humane Guild plans smoother year AURORA Any gathering connected to the Ontario Humane Society has become emotion charged of late and the last luncheon meeting of the York Humane Guild Thursday was no exception This time however it was emotion with a dif ference For a definite determination was very much in evidence both on the part of guild members and OHS executive vicepresident Tom Hughes to do away with personal differences which have Sears Iff Well test your water for hardness Find out today Sears please send me at no cosi or obligation water lest bottle and Water use questionnaire Name Address Telephone confrontation this time with a local twist Marjorie Samuels challenged Mr Hughes over the fact that the will not release animals for spaying and neutering to Seneca College Mrs Samuels charged that Dr Judith MacLean who heads a veterinarian assistants course at the college had assured them the animals would be spayed or neutered then returned to the society Seneca College is a licenced research facility explained Mr Hughes our policy is that we do not release animals for research anywhere in Ontario When Mrs Samuels and others persisted Mr Hughes pointed out you chose to think you are right but others may think you are wrong Today is neither the time nor the place to discuss animals for research If you wish to debate lets get the facts together and have a meeting Mr Hughes noted that once released animals are the sole responsibility of an animal committee After 25 years of studying animals for research he said its been our responsibility that these committees cant provide proper protection Robert Benson ended discussion abruptly when he volunteered Ive seen the contract and it has a clause whereby they have the right to send animals for research Guild president Phil Benson pointed out that the annual general meeting to which few ever come is the proper place to question Mr Hughes about policy Once again Thursday Mr Hughes reaffirmed his objective to establish a haven for old horses in the area Guild vicepresident Ursula Ostick questioned Why land here where it is very expensive Mr Hughes replied that he was looking not only to the immediate objective but also to a good investment If our predecessors had had the forsight to buy here we wouldnt have to worry he commented Mr Hughes also noted that the more remote the land the higher the trucking costs pressures eased a bit but the team still doesnt know if it will be holding meetings during the summer 1 suppose it just depends on how close the two sides get said the Richmond Hill trustee It isnt just the trustees who are in volved the committee chairman stressed I consider that staff members are a part of that committee he explained praising the involvement ad- ministration represen tatives Ken Stanley and Ted Smart In effect we still have six members on our team four trustees and two staff members While Mr Stanley recently resigned his human resources superintendents post to become a master teacher in geography he will remain active in negotiations as long as necessary the board has announced Mr Monroe said Mr Stanley is expected to remain on the team until sometime near the start of the next school year Bill Monroes reluctance to talk negotiations specifics doesnt extend to the tone of the contract talks As a group weve come to work together well he said proudly of the two sides I think weve created a lot of goodwill between the teachers federations and the boards Not that the Rich- mond Hill trustee is happy with every aspect of the boards operation There are very few things that we have long discussions on that really affect education System he noted Weve got a big role play and Its important that we realize it YOUR OPPORTUNITY To prepare for a new career in the FaN
