I 1977 hammers candidates with questions AURORA It took more than statistics and promises by local provincial candidates last weak to satisfy the crowd of angry voters that had come to hear about election Issues The group of about 300 that gathered at Aurora High School Thursday was demanding more than the candidates oftrepeated general statements of party policy and questioned the men more closely than other audiences have in past weeks The three party hopefuls had gathered for an all candidates meeting sponsored by The Aurora Banner in an evening of questioning by and It was the voters who pushed hardest for answers Leading off the opening statements was liberal Jim Wilson who touched on unemployment education energy and concern about the quality of life in York The liberal party would expand the Ontario Development Corporation set up a small business advisory centre and begin a jobcreation program aimed at new jobs in the first three years Mr Wilson said It would also return to core for schools reinstitute provincewide departmental examinations and stress a return to the basics he added hi the field of energy Mr Wilson pledged that his party would begin a home insulation program aimed at cutting home energy bills by 30 percent and would exempt solar heating from property tax assessment Work would also be done to find an alternate energy source to those now available he ad ded And repeating concern about the growth and cost of regional government Mr Wilson described the need for a study of all aspects of regional governments hopeful Ian Scott began his address by calling the June election an unnecessary one He continued by raising issues of unemployment energy pollution farmland and forests Accusing the Conservative government of not being able to deliver on its job promises Mr Scott said the would begin a massive job creation program by using million of the million now given in cor porate concessions The money would create jobs he said by developing the following in dustries million for a home in sulation program for homes million for a methanol plant to produce 10 million gallons of fuel a year million on a solar heating program for 20000 homes and million for a garbageburning project that would save electricity I s to nuclear power- harnessing the wind for example should be developed he added Charging that the forestry industry in Ontario is disappearing Mr Scott said the would see that for each acre of trees harvested one acre will be planted Noting that the Con servatives have made a similar promise he said that their record of reforestation meant that only maybe could they be believed The hopeful touched briefly on the issues of water pollution and agricultural land and recreated Mr Wilsons charge that the election is unnecessary Defending the election call PC incumbent Bill Hodgson said that the government was forced into it by a vote of nooccdence and that in order to return with a strong majority to face the Confederation issue the election was not a bad thing On the issue of leadership Mr Hodgson said liberal leader Stuart Smith does not have enough experience to be premier and that although leader Stephen Lewis has experience the province cant afford him Skirting a direct discussion of issues touched on by the other can didates Mr Hodgson spoke instead about the Davis Charter that covered them all Poking fun at critics who have likened the charter to that of former PC Premier George Drew Hodgson said that if its based on the Drew charter of St years ago were in for a good prosperous province in Ontario Following the introductory ad dresses Mr Hodgson was questioned by a panel of reporters including Bob Martin Era news editor John Scott Banner news editor Sheila Roberts Vaughan News editor and Chris Jackson of Topic Responding to a charge by Mr Jackson that the province has stalled on job creation for the children of the baby boom Mr Hodgson said that the province created jobs in the first quarter of the year And under further questioning about how many of those jobs the province could actually take credit for the candidate said he didnt think anyone else could take credit for them John Scott suggested to candidate Ian Scott that the million from tax concessions be put into taxpayers pockets to avoid the siphoning that inevitably happens with government involvement Mr Scott agreed that it was a good idea but said that the proposal would create more jobs Ian Scott came under heavy criticism from the audience over his partys announced plan to raise the minimum wage to four dollars The candidate was booed and heckled as he claimed that a week was no more than a living wage Audience members claimed that the raise would break many small businesses Under questioning about the proposed amusement park in Maple Mr Scott said the plan showed as much aesthetic appeal as Smokey the Bear and that it would eat up valuable farmland and drain profits to the United States Jim Wilson also came out against the plan saying he could not support it as it stands Supporting the proposal was Bill Hodgson who said that it would be clean and attractive create jobs and take over not more than 200 acres of farmland In response to questioning about Liberal plans to reinstitute depart mental exams Mr Wilson said the challenge for students is good preparation for the demanding ex perience of the work world Under fire for his partys plan to nationalize automobile insurance Ian Scott said it was the only other part of the economy beside forests that would be
