CUPE contract a RICHMOND HILL The AntiInflation Board has approved a contract between the York Region separate school board and members of the Canadian Union of Public employees but rolled back an agreement with separate school teachers to eight per cent While the rollback represents a salary loss on the salary grid according to board business superintendent Ed Joyce teachers have been paid according to the grid pending ap proval and will therefore be eligible for the retroactive pay Representatives for the teachers and the board met earlier this month to renegotiate fine points of the agreement to meet with the AIB decision According to an earlier agreement the teachers wont receive their retroactive pay until June The amount of retroactive pay for the people represented by the separate school teachers federation wont be known for several weeks Mr Joyce told The Era Its going to take about three weeks to work out what the retroactive pay is for each person he ex plained In the case of the CUPE agreement two per cent was held back after the contract was signed last November We settled last November but weve been waiting since then note Mr Joyce The 60 CUPE members will receive retroactive pay in about a week he added SCHOOL OPENS Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto right blesses classrooms at St Roberts Roman Catholic Junior High School in Markham the first separate high boards decision here last week to launch planning on a new education centre During the past year new staff has been hired to fill 12 out Of secretarial positions in the boards ad ministrative office business superintendent Ed Joyce noted following the decision He stressed that the approval doesnt necessarily represent a goahead for construction of a new building and said staff must consider all possible accommodation arrangements including rental and leaseback agreements Theres a lot of areas we have to look at before we do anything he told The Era You wont see an education centre this year In approving an education committee report recommending a start to planning on the new education centre trustees avoided any reference to actual construction of the building While construction was included in the proposal first presented by the committee the clause was deleted on a motion by East Georgina trustee Frank Kelly Board chairman John accepted the change noting that the committee had been asked to consider need for the centre and the possibility of con struction Its an excellent motion he said of the original proposal from the education committee It just went a little too far Richmond Hill trustee Con Thompson opposed deletion of the construction proposal We determined the need and therefore dropped the possible he argued Mr Kelly agreed there is a need for a new facility but said no building plans have been prepared or financial studies completed All possible alter natives should be researched before the board commits itself to construction he said The boards present administrative facilities are currently divided between the former Our Lady of Fat ima separate school on St and Our Lady of Help of Christians separate school The 3888 sq ft Dufferin St operation expanded by a total of sq ft through the addition of two portable c la ssrooms ac commodates people while the 2400 sq ft consultant services operation at the second school houses resource staff A
