I Trie Newmarket I I This welltravelled artist makes his Wed April A3 1 V 4 I By DEBBIE SNOWBALL Alex von Svoboda is a man who travels with just an overnight bag and tooth brush He has been around the world learned from all his travels and worked in all mediums of art To Alex von Svoboda art is a language that breaks down all barriers Mr von Svoboda who speaks six languages is responsible for a sculpture The Quest which was carved outside Carrara Italy from the largest block of marble ever to be quarried tons 17 feet high 24 feet wide and feet thick His travels all over the world form the im pressions for People and Places a display at the York Fine Art Gallery here until Sunday These paintings have never been shown before in a public gallery Mr von Svoboda has managed to capture a million impressions with just a few short strokes of his brush and his tempera colors lead his viewer from the Arizona desert to a South Sea island and from Alaska to the dark streets of Barcelona There are faces in his collection too An Eskimo a native girl a Calgary Indian and Susie Wong all make appearances Mr von uses colors to suggest moods the wide open spaces of Texas are deep yellow while the settling of a heated twilight over Kingston Jamaica is a rich orange speckled with yellows and whites The Count born in Austria and now a resident of King Town ship is a solitary man with international bonds He maintains two studios one just outside of Toronto and one in Florence Italy allowing him to move anywhere In the world He estimates that every second month his work will take him to Europe Canada for him Is home though Its a wonderful retreat he says Mr von Svoboda operates under a cor porate name as many of his works require the help of up to 30 craftsmen One of his works Perpetuity a redwood and bronze sculpture took two years to create The sculpture which represents the slogan of the Georgina Pacific world headquarters The sun is shining and the trees are growing was created from the cross- section of a 350 ft high redwood The total diameter of the sculpture Is 32 and the sculpter used tons of bronze during casting His centennial project was the design of the BC centennial fountain one of the largest fountains in North America Aside from his sculptures which have often been preferred over those of Henry Moore and his paintings Mr von Svoboda- has been honored far his work in landscaping and church design He also takes delight in breeding and raising champion quarter horses his membership in the King Township Historical Society and has farm in King I paint
