like to play softball once a week- Last fall they decided Newmarket needs another lighted ball diamond so they and other leagues could play longer into the evening Instead of crying the blues when they learned the town had no immediate plans to buy lights for a softball diamond the members of the Newmarket Ladies Softball League set out to raise the money for the lights themselves They need onequarter of the price tag for installation of lights at a diamond at Fairgrounds Park The balance will come from the Ontario government and the fund The girls were encouraged to get into the fundraising by town council which some years ago adopted a userpays policy in relation to town facilities To tennis club members for instance who suggested to the town that they needed a clubhouse along with the new downtown courts it was suggested in turn that they raise the money to build one The policy is sound and with Ontario government and grants available to cover up to per cent of projects such as the ball diamond lights does not leave too onerous a burden on the civic groups The ladies league hopes to raise a large part of the funds needed through a dance May We wish them every success Board walks away from job Maybe it was too good to be true but under the chairmanship of Newmarket trustee Craig some sanity appeared to be returning to the York Region public school board Meetings were tightening up and while there was still an obvious split in the board trustees were starting to work together Then camethe walkouts nothing dramatic trustees just left a meeting before it was over Last weeks session is an example The session ran overtime which isnt unusual and trustees began to drift away Finally with just a few items remaining on the agenda Mr Cribar found himself without a quorum The meeting just broke up and while none of the unresolved issues were of earthshattering importance theyll now be added to the board agenda for the next meeting Trustee walkouts that kill a quorum are beginning to become too common with this board Surely these people are elected to represent us If they dont agree with an issue being debated they should certainly voice their ob jections But they should not in any instance walk away from the job they were elected to do while region Letters to the editor talks away Core 0 futility Council youre not voting youre visiting complained York Region Chairman Garfield Wright at Thursdays council meeting One can appreciate the frustration of the regional chairman as he faces men and women the elite of local government when they wont even pay attention to the vote Under the regions procedural bylaw a negative vote must be counted when a councillor fails to cast a vote on an issue But the chairman knows the rubber stamp is working when four hands rise in the affirmative and no hands are raised in the negative Last Thursday apprently the chairman decided hed had enough with reading minds Under the heading Aurora to fight core decay your reporter Carol Corlcy says that Aurora has only started its decline As an Auroran of 14 years standing I have to state that Aurora generally and its downtown in particular has been coughing badly for quite a few years Our traffic and shopping pattern was changed drastically first by the removal of the post office to a new and much less convenient location almost years ago Then by the building of the miniplaza at the northwest corner of the main intersection complete with grocery and super drugstore which of course is where he action is One by one the old- established downtown businesses either shut up shop or those which survived moved elsewhere Upper Canada Mall and greatly accelerated the breakup the most recent casually being the Stedmans which moved into the Plaza apartments in Bradford When I moved into the apartment wc had found things not in the condition they should have been The curtain track in the livingroom was falling out a soap dish in the bathroom was under the vanity there were marks on the wall from the previous tenants using tape hangers for their pictures washers and dryers rarely working there was a small dent in the kitchen sink and the sliding balcony door was not properly on the track This building is situated on the main street of Bradford close to the local hotels which leads you to think the building should be made relatively secure from people walking in off the street The building has no intercom system and does not have locking entrance doors Entrance is gained from the rear of the building where what lights they do have are often burned out The superintendent of the place warned my wife never to do any washing at night because the laundry room is in the basement and if anything happened down there no one would hear anything Besides that the superintendent lets 15 to 20 kids congregate in the halls every morning to wait for the school bus these kids are not tenants So every morning you have to fight your way through kids and cigarette smoke About the problems of repairs in the apart ment solution to the drapery track was Get some ceiling brackets and mount it in the ceiling yourself soap dish was never put back into the wall and sliding door never fixed Needless to say the superintendent did ab solutely nothing to fix that apartment since the day we moved in To break the lease you have to pay 25 In the lease it states that the landlord will pay the tenant interest of six per Bairn booze I think that the at titude of Grover Crosby and his fellow con servative evangelicals towards drinking at baseball games isnt much different from the religionists of Jesus day At Luke and 34 we read For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine and ye say He hath a devil The Son of man Is come eating and drinking and ye say Behold a gluttonous man a wine bibber a friend of publicans and sinners KEN SIS LE It Vale Ave Newmarket f AMD MCE But TO cent annually on the last months rent Since I did not receive the interest at all I said 1 would pay the difference As soon as I moved the supcrintendant phoned me saying they didnt have to pay the interest and he threatened to sue me The next thing I knew I got a letter from lawyer saying I owe Anzil for repainting apartment for a punc tured sink for breaking the lease and for his lawyers fees So if you ever move into an apartment make sure you put down in writing all the things that are wrong with the apartment before you move in and make sure everything is corrected because sure enough some landlord could try to rip you off PETER I ESSE Newmarket Thanks Irish Tommy lam writing to you in hope that you will give my sincere thanks to Irish Tommy Burns for his efforts to open a boxing club in Newmarket My son and I live in Aurora and up until last year my boy was in boxing for four years Since there Is no club here hes had to give It up and I dont believe he should He has a few trophies which Im quite proud of and both he and would like him continue in this field could join the club would you please write me or phone 7276786 after 6 pm Also wed love to meet George when he for the first fights The boys need more sports activities and I think boxing Is the best My son is and still very much interested In boxing He fought for and in North Bay Aurora By ROY GREEN fee to roadshow ministration could long ago have moved into the old PO building pur- cashable I understand at that time for about It would thus have helped maintain downtown business It didnt do so I was told because of the cost of renovation and the feeling that with the phasing in of regional government it was going to be slightly unnecessary anyway So what did it do Why it administered practically a mortal blow to downtown by moving into a new multimillion dollar palace in an in convenient location Now most of us have to drive to pay our taxes and other courtesies Now the town staff rattle around like buckshot in the dome of St Pauls Apart from the capital onslaught on the taxpayers wallets the permanent maintenance costs have mushroomed like the cloud over Hiroshima To further help things the town has aggressively promoted and supported a further shopping plaza Northern Lights just up St a spit or two Then a few months ago it had a narrow downtown store demolished on the west side to make room for a walkway to the parking lot behind the stores Little need now exists Downtown customers have long departed the large parking lot is often almost empty Timpson now suggests paving the parking lot titivating storefronts and backs as a remedy It becomes painfully obvious that he is a schoolteacher not a businessman The gernal appearance of the land scape might improve but the basic situation partly a product of feeble minded politicians would remain the same At the moment three of the four corners of our main intersection are occupied by money lenders banks The other corner has a chiropractor Wed probably be better off with three and one moneylender Just south of the main arc three more moneylenders two on the east side one on the west The state of Aurora were soon going to need even more money lenders I contrast all this with Newmarket There you have kept your post- office administration building and a good chain grocery all on the main street You have a lively attractive main street Good ad ministration Is part of the story In Aurora we seem to pour the cream of futility on the compote of foolishness SID Aurora They wont take the Regional LaughIn on the road Residents in the hinterlands of York must still come all the way to our version of the Centre the administration centre oT York Region on Bayview Avenue The Laughin is of course a description of some meetings of the council of York There have been times when those meetings were much more humorous than that nowdead tv series where a bucket of water on the head was staple fair That phrase was coined by the publisher of this newspaper David Haskell He also calls meetings of Newmarket council the Bob and Ray show DONT KNOW DIDDLYSW AT At any rate of suggested at last weeks meeting of York Region Council that they take the show on the road once in a while People out in the boondocks he says dont know diddlyswat about the machinations of regional council Would council be willing to ask its ad ministrative committee to study the possibility of holding the odd regional council meeting somewhere other than the No They would not They had to take two votes because coun cillors werent raising their hands high enough but it appeared that the motion to study it was lost four to three Just as well too Last weeks meeting was very mild and tame but I suspect that had the good folks of say Georgina had a chance to see that performance Ihey would take up a petition to have the government investigate the administration of York Region DOCTOR GARF SHOW People in Georgina have already done that with their own council A petition with names has been sent to the province asking them to probe Georginas administration Thank golly they wont get the chance to catch one per formance of the Doctor Travelling Medical Show What would the folks have seen if last weeks meeting had been an offBroadway run Lets start with Ihe encore Before you could snap the elastic off the agenda Chairman Wright crowed that newspapers radio and God knows who else had misinformed the public and caused the region considerable concern over Yorks little court battle with King Township The details of all that will be carried elsewhere in this paper and Im not even going to debate or argue the issue On the face of it York is right and King Mayor Margaret Britnell appears to have once again opened her mouth and inserted her foot CHASTISES BRITNELL Regional Solicitor Ed Oakes then took stage centre to read the courts official verdict and to chastise Mayor Britnell He said he was sorry she wasnt there to answer his question about the effects of the court decision on York How any fairminded or responsible person could hear that verdict and then tell the press the opposite is beyond me was the gist of comments of Newmarket took the opportunity to suggest that Mayor Britnell is neither fair- minded nor responsible There was an air of obvious euphoria Finally it seemed Mayor Margaret had been caught with her highheel in mouth Mayor Margaret was not there She has a penchant for missing the council meeting im mediately following one of her illinformed blasts at the region through the newspapers BRITNELL ABSENT Being absent she could not defend a resolution from her council that the region lop out of Kings 1977 capital expenditure budget The region had assigned that cost figure to King for a series of water and sewage jobs King said it hadnt been consulted about them and didnt want them charged to King It appears that King misunderstood that the figure is not in Kings budget but is only a possible item in a fiveyear forecast from the k region A job that may have to be done in a hurry King would have to approve and agree before any money was spent It appears that way because Mayor Margaret wasnt there to explain it While some municipalities are asking for a larger representation on regional council Kings representative manages to miss these important meetings It might have been a good idea to take the Regional RoadShow to King That might have made it easier for Mayor Margaret to attend
