he was closer to the truth than he realized Mr had apologized to the regional police com mission at its last meeting for using such an exagerated term but he refused to back down on his statements that too much rigid enforcement of traffic is occurring within the region Last Wednesday the Newmarket Commissioner continued his fight with Police Chief Bruce Crawford producing a ticket handed to a 16yearold Sutton school boy who was charged with walking on the wrong side of the road Mr said he had received a letter from the boys parents regarding the charge and told the commission he wants to pay the ticket himself Its a disgrace if we have to His sparks controversy SUTTON Stuart Stalkers walking ticket has set off a York Region Police Com mission controversy Mr Stalker was walking along Dalton with his girl friend on a lunch break from Sutton District High School when he was stopped by an officer who informed the pair they were walking on the wrong side of the street and could be ticketed Mr Stalker said he told the officer he was only going a little further and was presented with the ticket The youth said he and the girl were walking on the east side of the road because the west sidewalk was covered with four to five inches of snow The sidewalk runs along the west side of Dalton from the school to High St and then crosses over to the east side Mr Stalker also said there was adequate room on the shoulder to stay away from traffic do that sort of thing Mr Twinney told council It wasnt the only ticket Mr Twinney produced The folder he brought along to the com mission meeting held more and there were also complaints from York Regional citizens of more and more radar enforcement on regional roads Mrs Coad a King Township resident complained that cruisers are hiding behind snow banks to apprehend speeders She told the commission If officers have to play such a sneaking game in order to harass people to pick up speeding tickets something is terribly wrong Mrs claimed she has spotted the hidden cruisers frequently although they park without even a parking light on Surely they can come out like gentlemen and park on the side of the road the King Township woman insisted Mr also received a photostatic copy of a ticket for a King City man for speeding at miles an hour in a 30 mile zone This also was presented to the board Chief Crawford appeared surprised at the disclosures and asked to report back to the board after speaking with the officers involved Chief Crawfords release of latest statistics regarding the controversial speeding tickets show 2000 more were issued in February as a result of stepped up radar patrols A total of 2212 speeders were caught in radar during January compared to in February The chief who wants 20 more men for the force is meeting stiff opposition from Mr Twinney who believes of ficers are being used on radar patrol instead of in more necessary police work Chief Crawford in his report told the board officers are complying with his in structions to step up en forcement of speed laws throughout the region He said increases in the number of speeding tickets substantiates his claim that a steppedup enforcement program is warranted Replying to Mrs Coads letter the chief told the com mission the complaint is self defeating He told the board You cant hide radar or it wont work He also said a police officer see POLICE page YOUNG PEOPLE NEEDED FOR POLICING INPUT Adults support new youth organization NEWMARKET Young Adults for Police Protection YAPP a new organization that hopes to foster better relations between the police and young people is looking for more youth input Adults are responding committee member Doug Sweeney said Friday but young people have reacted slower We have a great number of the adult population listening Mr Sweeney told The Era They want to hear what is going on Young people havent been as quick to respond said committee member Danny Semchyshyn because they dont want to put themselves on the line Mr Semchyshyn his sister Annette and Mr Sweeney all agree on the need for better communication between the police and young people Part of the problem Mr Sweeney said is that officers arent assigned to regular patrols That same contact is needed now he stressed Id rather see police I know he explained I can trust them and they can trust me Id go to them if I had a problem A policy of assigning of ficers to regular beats would increase young peoples respect for the force he added As an alternative YAPP would like to meet officers assigned to the Newmarket- Aurora area for informal discussion of problems cited by the young people Wed like to get their personal views about whats going on said Ms Semchyshyn She stressed that the group doesnt expect complete backing from all of its peers Half the battle is realizing there are some for us and some against us she stated Added Mr Sweeney Were just kind of doing what we think is right no matter what other people think We think we should stand up for what we believe in Adults and young people wishing to participate in YAPP can contact Annette chyshyn at
