pushes the buzzer according to area housing manager Tom Surgeoner Mr Surgeoner and branch manager BJ Sutherland appeared before town council Monday night to discuss security problems which have come up since a murder in one of the buildings last August Mr Surgeoner told council he was very alarmed at what took place there last sum- mer but he said despite letters notices and the meetings they still break the rules However he was not being harsh in assessing his blame He pointed out tenants of the building are senior citizens and some dont realize how much society has changed in recent years He cited as examples two occasions on which adults one selling magazines and one delivering papers had gained unauthorized entry into buildings in the area before being stopped by a building custodian We are in a difficult position We try and I think we do a good security job he said He urged anyone particularly families of tenants to bring com plaints and problems to him He said often relatives can Impress upon tenants the need for caution more effectively than can his office The two were ap pearing Monday at the request of council after a request that security guards for the building be considered brought a response that no guards would be hired Councillor Doris Blair told Mr Sutherland most of the enquiries she received are from friends and relatives of tenants and most deal with fears conjured up since last summers murder We cant just brush these people aside she said She reiterated earlier complaints that door locks and buzzers dont work and that one building was without a custodian for a month this winter Mr Sutherland said electronic door system has been repaired and will be fixed faster in future if it breaks down again He also said although one caretaker was on holidays the building was not left uncovered The caretaker of the second building filled in he said In explaining his decision not to hire it guards Mr Sutherland pointed out the murder was an isolated incident To my knowledge there is no daily threat to the residents If there was we would certainly have to reconsider getting a guard He promised tighter security at the building and said more money might be budgeted for security in the future A I r sewage plantOKd SHARON Con struction on the Mount Albert sewage treatment facility is scheduled to begin as soon as weather permits now
