Schools first Careers Day in recent memory The afternoon event not only provided students with a halfday holiday from the normal routine of classes but also acquainted them with the business world Although the idea had not originated with the students it was entirely supported by Lhem Grade to students participated in the program organized by the schools guidance department Thoughts of staging a Careers Day had been tossed around for many years according to guidance head Mr but nothing ever it in recent years However it was finally decided that students should be able to obtain firsthand information regarding careers they might be interested in A survey was distributed among the Grade 11 to 13 students to determine the careers they were interested in pursuing Using the results of the survey speakers from different fields were obtained Mr said the response was very en couraging While usually a fair number of silly responses are attached to questionnaires circulated at the school he said only one Careers Day survey was returned with a negative reply The afternoon which was divided into two one- hour presentations was attended by speakers and 250 students Although some students turned out for only one session and others did not attend at all there were more hand than Mr and his associates had actually expected While the program was an eyeopening ex perience for Mr and his staff it was also surprising for the students One student ex pressed surprise when she discovered that all the speakers seemed to enjoy their respective careers I am constantly hearing that 95 percent of the work force hate their jobs she said However these people speak as if they are proud of being a part of their chosen profession Talking informally on a onetoone basis each speaker provided
