AC Era Newmarket Aurora Wed Feb Heart Fund wants to your pressure By ALICE NEWMARKET Prepare to check that blood pressure of yours It will cost you nothing more than a few minutes of your time can be done conveniently at Upper Canada Mall and is all part of the Newmarket Heart Fund campaign Clinics offering the free blood pressure tests will be open Feb 10 11 and in Upper Canada Mall from a 9 pm and 10 am to pm Saturday The clinic will be staffed by nurses from York County Hospital and local public health nurses No one is more thrilled about this highlight of Heart Fund than campaign chairman Gloria a local mother of six and grandmother of three who is bundling her boundless energy into the Newmarket drive for the fourth straight year It was Mrs Mclndless along with an enthusiastic team of captains and canvassers who initiated Newmarkets first Heart Fund campaign back in collecting a total of That figure has risen steadily more than doubling in all areas last year For chairman who has really put her heart into organizing the blood pressure booth the project is her baby and shes thrilled by the terrific response and cooperation from the community Mrs Mclndless is confident that two nurses per shift will be kept pretty busy and has arranged for standby nurses should the need suddenly arise The public health nurses have undertaken the responsibility of doing followup work in the homes Mrs told The Era The campaign chairman stressed the nurses keenness to cooperate in the project White chairman does hare the nurses fined up for the booth project she is still in the market for some more canvassers to handle the sprawling Newmarket route She has organized the Newmarket area under captains each heading up a party of to canvassers Could we thank the regulars Mrs asked eagerly during the Era interview Shes par ticularly grateful to those like Joan Montgomery and Gwen Whiteside ho have accompanied the chairman into their fourth straight campaign Theres also Harvey Bell who regularly insists on covering one whole area himself His beat is bounded by Muriel Ave the 3rd Con cession Srigley St and Sutherland Ave A retired businessman and firm believer in the old adage if you want it done right do it yourself he feels its people with the time available who should assume such responsibilities in the community Mrs is also grateful to regulars Sandra and Ann Last year when the chair mans father died in midFebruary at the very heart of the campaign they quickly dug in rounded up extra church workers and assumed the responsibilities themselves Mrs feels this fourth campaign might be her last as chairman I feel Ive laid the groundwork she told The Era And true to form shes now thoroughly involved in a variety of new community projects including mental health Urging residents to put their heart into it again this year Mrs said heart disease is widespread in the community that more than 25 million Canadians of all ages have some form of heart and blood vessel ailment and that more than half of all deaths each year are due to heart and circulatory diseases with about percent occurring among people to years of age On the brighter side however great strides have been made in research diagnosis treatment and control of heart disease Progress has made it possible for thousands to survive and recover and surgical techniques for correcting heart defects have been developed in recent years Since the high blood pressure detection booth is this years highlight to the campaign organizers stress that hypertension is a most misunderstood term that means high blood pressure It does not mean being nervous irritable excitable highstrung impatient or highly tense It is common in all types of people with all types of personalities and occupations and it afflicts more than Canadians or about percent of the adult population In most cases its cause is unknown but left un checked the constant strain on the blood vessels and organs of the body begins to take its toll Such serious complications as stroke heart disease and kidney disease may result Early detection and early treatment can reduce the possibility of serious complications Often clearly defined symptons of high blood pressure are missing and many suffering from hypertension do not feel sick So remember to take those few minutes and drop into the booth at Upper Canada Mall Have a heart and have your blood pressure checked too Conservatory exams NEWMARKET Results of exams held recently here by the Royal Conservatory of Music were released last week The successful
