information on what you have chosen as a career take this opportunity The occasion is ob viously the end result of many long hours of preparation on the part of our hardworking guidance counsellors and will probably be ex tremely beneficial to everyone The first edition of the Forum has been issued and was met with vast approval We still arent sure if it was the pictures or the fact that there was more written content or that it looked like a real newspaper that made it so popular with the students but the new Forum is here to stay and we would like to thank the nice people at Alliance Printing for doing such a fine job for us Photo Carol Gibbons left assistant to the director of Newmarket Highs current production of the Thornton Wilder classic Our Town and actor Tom Tidman silk screen signs advertising the production By DEBBIE NEWMARKET It has been exactly years since Bill Elliott staged the Thornton Wilder play Our Town at Newmarket High school This is the fifth time that the play has been staged at NHS and it is shaping up very nicely The play is staged entirely by the schools Grade population and has been met with a large amount of enthusiasm from the student body Assistant to the director Carol Gibbons an 18yearold Grade student expressed surprise and delight at the response the play has received from Grade students The have been really great Miss Gibbons said here last week They have been more than willing to help me just go up to one of them in the hall and say that I need to have something that needs to be done and they do it This years production might be called a little ambitious on the part of the senior class since they have decided to keep as much of the funds raised by the play as they possibly can This means that costumes which would normally be rented from a costume house in Toronto at a price of each will be made by a crew of seam stresses from the class headed by Kathy Klauck another student assisted by Lynda an English and physical education teacher at the school The stage manager in the play is played by Council Smith It is a big part and demands that the lines be learned and correct or else the whole play falls apart Connell seems to have managed the task very well though and he has four reallife stage managers to help him put the play together Jenny Karch Peter McCarnan John Staunton and George Certain sections of the play require that the cast be able to move in a certain way It is at this point that the schools choreographer Lynn Mertens moves in Mrs Mertens although she presently te aches only geography at one time taught physical education and took dancing lessons for many years with Betty Gordon so shes well qualified for the Job Although most of the cast had been chosen by the director according to the people he had felt would do well in the part the role of Emily posed a problem The person who had been asked to do the role had turned it down and there were not one but five very enthusiastic volunteers for the job The only solution to the problem was to hold readings for the role and then have a committee decide who would get the part The committee which was comprised of Mr Elliott Miss Gibbons Mrs Mertens and a few interested people who stayed to listen to the readings finaly decided upon Morrison Cathryn is also a Grade 13 student at the school but she has at least one vaulable stage ex perience behind her Miss Morrison played Sing in the schools production The Mikado Miss Gibbons seems to be able to spread herself out in order to appear in at least different places at once and Mr Elliott is very pleased with his choice of producer Enthusiasm and morale are high among the cast members and backstage workers and the fact that first production of Our Town at NHS years ago won an allOntario cham pionship is a constant reminder of the con sistent high standards in dramatics the school is famous tor Production dates for the play are February and IB Tickets are 150 each and may be obtained from Gillian Brooks or any of the cast members or by calling the school at Curtain time for the production is pm This play has been greeted with enthusiasm all over the world in
