Olympicsized swimming and diving facilities indoor tennis courts of Wimbleton standards basketball courts tracks and gymnasia as well as indoor yearround equestrian facilities The King campus already has an equestrian training class top- notch crosscountry skiing trails a lake with sailing facilities and is located in the heart of Canadas most active Olympic equestrian training area The nearby Jokers Hill estate in Glenvilte west of Newmarket was designated the official raining area for the Olympic equestrian team prior to the last international event The new complex would be used by Seneca students and main tained by college staff as well as being available for training by local athletes and for major local provincial national and international events It would make York Region one of Canadas major competitive and training centres said the mayor who is a former Olympic athlete He said only through such a cooperative project involving the regions only college with all its municipal governments could the Wintario funds vast resources be tapped for sufficient capital The complex would be of a calibre and scope otherwise unavailable to Yorks citizens he said He pointed out endorsation of the project would mean new local community recreation facilities could in future be built along utilitarian lines The Seneca facility would be available for events where large crowds were expected It would then reduce the pressure on and for more local facilities Senecas King campus he points out is centrally located in the region and virtually at the hub of Yorks road pattern It can be reached from anywhere in the region in a maximum half hour drive In most large urban areas the top quality athletic training facilites are available only at the local university points out the mayor Seneca is essentially a college established to serve York Region and the Metro Toronto borough of North York According to the Ontario culture and Recreation ministry funds are available as capital grants to help develop ad ditional cultural and recreational facilities across the province Any individual organization municipality or Indian band council can suggest a capital project to be assisted from Wintario funds The money can be used for purchase of land andor buildings site works construction of new buildings alteration of existing buildings restoration of buildings and permanent equipment Any capital project of a cultural or recreational nature is eligible for up to onethird funding after all other provincial and government grants have been deducted Matching funding on a
