Newmarket Mayor George Burrows may have struck the right chord when he questioned whether there was actually a need for the con struction of a new Region of York administration But he said commenting on a recent regional planning committee if such a complex necessary a site in Newmarket would be most suitable Mayor Burrows in questioning the need for the complex since the present regional headquarters is not exactly bursting at the If a new complex is built the present location of the engineering and assessment department offices would be moved The space Both the police department and the health unit would surely stay where they are So it boils down to spending several million dollars to house two more departmentsonly one of which is now paying rent But the time will surely come when a more spacious accommodation and a more suitable location is necessary It is for these reasons that regional councillors are wisely weighing alternative sites now Of the three locations being considered two are in the Richmond Hill area The other in Newmarket Each of the three sites is located near four major highways Two of the three sites would be part of a large development would be near a population of One location in Richmond Hill would cost a similar acre location in the other Richmond Hill site would cost Thats land purchase costs only A 12acre site on the regionowned land in Newmarket would cost the taxpayers nothing Proponents for the Richmond Hill location argue that a complex there would serve nearly double the population The present regional administration centre is used mainly by employees politicians newspaper reporters and developers We wonder how many regional residents have had or will have occasion to do any business at the present administration centre We wonder how many regional residents even know where it is York Region needs an executive committee THERELL BE SOME BEEFING BOUT THIS York Regional Council last week designated its cumbersome ninemember administration committee to finalize salary negotiations with the regions department heads and find a better way to do the job next time All the mayors in York sit on the committee The move came in the wake of the em barrassing situation council and its top executives found themselves in recently when preliminary salary recommendations for the department heads were leaked to the press before they had been fully discussed by council The subsequent settlement was obviously influenced by the fact that it then had to be made under the pressure of intense public scrutiny In no other municipality in York and probably in few others in Ontario does such a This committee however was never authorized to negotiate department head and nonunion staff salaries according to a report the department heads made to council last week The department heads have to recommend their own pay raises directly to the council and councillors must react pointed out the report It might have added that under these circumstances a leak seems inevitable In turning the problem over to the ad ministration committee last week council directed it to come up with a uniform procedure for negotiating future staff salaries The best uniform procedure would be the one most other councils use a small committee of senior council members charged with negotiating and settling staff salaries surely the most important task in the preparation of any municipal budget The mayors could then abolish their ad- THE Readers ERA Public has right to know One year ago York Countys public school e to have a fivemember executive finance committee established but failed to win support for the move Council at that time voted for a committee of no fewer than five members and asked Chairman Garfield to name them Mr Wright an opponent of the committee named the nine mayors Rumors rampant during this period destroyed the trust and confidence which the public placed in its trustees resulting in he election of a cohort of representatives dedicated to keeping the public informed Yet this same group lias sanctioned a secret meeting to discuss the most important issue in education in the county today the the Newmarket Recreation Dept The classes were held on Thursday Friday Saturday and Monday This was sum total of all Information given being patten enlarge patterns but how JANET JACKSONS POINT The ideas behind hockey are the same says Ellis a former star who has lived at Jacksons Point for years You still try to put the puck in the net and prevent the other team from doing That Mr feels is about the only resemblance between hockey as played today and as he knew it in the 1920s and 1930s Its foster now I often wonder how people today can get involved in the game when theyre only on the ice for such a few seconds And its a more colorful game Hut now he says its getting so that its not every game you want to watch Its getting pretty thin In the old days here were a lot of stars every team had four or five who was born in lived in Bradford during his youth and first played hockey with Hill Hancocks Newmarket team in a team sponsored by Andy Davis of Davis Leather Dodger Collins from Bradford was on the same team as were Doc Freddy Murray and of Newmarket Ellis Pringlcs next move was to the Toronto Morlboroughs during his twoyear stretch with them the won the Memorial Cup season in a game played in Toronto against Winnipeg From there he signed a threeyear contract with the New York Americans then a National Hockey League team He was married in 1933 and has a son just one but hes a big one but continued to play professional hockey every winter until 1939 By the early 1940s he was living at Jacksons Point yearround and playing hockey with the Sutton team taking the Ontario Championship in 1942 Now out of the game as a professional Ellis turned to the operation of Mossinglon Park for his livelihood Though management of this popular resort spot made tremendous demands on his time during the summer it gave him freedom during the winter months to curl to coach local hockey and to play with the NHL Im no longer a hockey fanatic by any means he says today Oh I watch the odd game on television hut thats about it lakes no great skill to hit a guy over the head with a stick This business about it being a game to let si cam is a lot of if theyve so much steam to let off they should skate a little harder As hockey faded inlo his past operation of Park grew in importance for Ellis and his wife Margaret Today he is negotiating to sell the park and a second retirement The park which is named after one of the first homesteaders in the area straddles the Point benefitting from both a halfmile of river front and a beach on Lake The developed portion of con sists of approximately eight acres along the water fronts this is backed by another acres of hardwood bus which has been allowed lo remain as a limiteduse wilderness area Deer racoons and a hevy of inhabit this hush lot and heaver can often be seen along the river At this time of year white trillions carpel the During the Depression and War years the operated as a generaluse park open lo overnight or weekend campers and to picnickers who came for the day only as well as for the visitor who wanted lo settle down and spend the entire season in a trailer or small colt age These were Ihe days of the Tent City at Point and of the dance at Belle too drew huge crowds to its dance hall The Art West orchestra or the Carl Black band from Newmarket would provide the music and icorginas one policeman George Foster helped Ellis keep order Nowadays youd have lo have a small army lo control thai many people Pringle says The old dance hall remains is no longer opened to he public Today use the park is restricted to day time visitors who want to swim or picnic and to trailer or campers who stay for the season the headache of overnight or weekend campers being one the decided they could live without Ninety nine percent of the campers are from Toronto he says and many return to Mossinglon year after year One family has vacationed there every summer for 20 consecutive years During the 1950s Ellis Pringle was involved in local politics and served as Town ship councillor for six years before resigning That was before all this regional nonsense he says Its a good thing Im not a councillor now He was also postmaster of Briars Park post office as Ihe trailer camp office was called for 2fl years Hcurl Month Fashions of Each year from April to October the park absorbed nearly every minute of his time He would open the park at am he says and often didnt leave it again until one in the morning when Ihe dance hall closed Besides fresh air and lots of it he beach dunce hall and post office the park offered boat rentals a snack bar grocery shop play ground marina with moorage for small boats and electricity hookups The general management of all this meant the never even thought of a summer vacation for themselves was a lot of hard work he says but enjoyed il more than I would have enjoyed working in an office or going to Toronto every day to work Beside that I thought was won derful I got all the headaches was hard to get and anything thai came up I had to deal with Even if the kids wouldnt go to sleep their parents would threaten to send for Mr And over the years I had to throw out he odd person always an unpleasant job and a little upsetting Although sale of the park is not yet com pleted the are looking forward to new days of freedom I dont think well do anything very drastic he says Wed just like to do what we want to when we want to rather lhan be tied here all summer please accept for your Community Centre It the Recreation have to advertise public Our objective although all sales promotior ivale company in Ihey dont even hint are selling product Id like to know if Ihe is disruption in our postal getting part of hopeful that our Ontario Division Director Nuclear medicine A bombs in operating rooms By ROY GREEN Today some odds and ends things to clear up and comments upon a thing or two Sounds ex citing eh First I must admit to a slip I made here two weeks ago I was commenting on the fact that we seem to haye a number of empty stores here in Newmarket and there are apparently more to In chastising the mayor and council I neglected to point out that they are not wholly responsible or the situation as it now stands Commercial toning was already in existence on Mme of these properties and council of its feelings really cant do much mere than eventually Issue the permits and the owner to do what he wants lot of fun On page three of last weeks issue theres one Booze drugs top police problems I wander how many people before reading any further got the impression that cops were all taking booze and drugs Or how about this one York County Hospital to use nuclear medicine by 1973 Can you imagine hem blasting away with A bombs up In operating rooms Speaking of headlines some days it doesnt pay to get out of bed Gerry Barker of the Bradford Witness shudders every time he remembers the headline over a story which told of the election of a new president for the onion growers association Jones elected the head reclaimed much to the dismay of Barker and m sure the Onionhead himself Sometimes it isnt headlines that cause all the fun It wasnt too long ago that The Era I carried a small ad in the helpwanted section for someone to work rotating shift The gremlins went to work and dropped the out of shift 1 dont know if they ever got anyone to take the job So much for headlines and classified ads That nonsense took up a little bit of room I see that Ray Newmarket Regional Councillor will take over as Chairman of York Region in April while Wright is away for days Many people call Garf Big Daddy Will they call Ray Little Daddy Is it true that due to pressure from a number of womens lib types that John Sikura new owner is going to call the team the Newmarket Redpersons Speaking of the We hope that Brian Brian took over the club in middisaster last And still on hockey Today marks the start of the annual houseleague hockey tournament in Newmarket No one else to my knowledge holds a tournament for house league players and cant think why Its always a great success thanks to the organizers coaches etc and the kids really ball win or lose Id think that more towns would hold houseleague tourneys to give more boys a chance to meet other kids Meanwhile our hockey neighbor to the north East is hosting the Little But its nice to see the amount of community support and involvement that has gone Into making the tourney a success for the area I know cattle feed has become very ex pensive but I cant understand why we seem to be reading so many stories about fanners being charged for allowing their cattle to starve Wouldnt it be cheaper to give the things away I reckon I have room for one in my backyard just long enough to fatten him up and prepare him for dinner You must have gathered by the rambling incoherent course this weeks column has taken that I couldnt think of anything to write about You are right
