i The Era Newmarket Keiwkk Wed Jan s ins THE ERA Serving York County Since mm Co Limited The Era i one of Inland Phone Newmarket DA WD BARRY WALLACE Charles St Phone Aurora Legislation to conserve our heritage demolished in all but a few large cities without even a review of their quality Most European nations have recognized the cultural and economic value of architectural and historic conservation and a high degree of government involvement in building preser vation is accepted by their citizens Canadians generally have lagged in this area In Quebec new legislation allows the provincial cultural affairs department to hold up of buildings for up to a year while their historic and cultural value is assessed Ontario is currently studying legislation in this but no action has been taken Consider the reaction for instance if the log home of one of Newmarkets original Quaker pioneer families should be threatened with approval of a cabinet minister before carrying out any alterations or demolitions Similarly changes to buildings on the municipal lists should require approval by the municipal planning board and council working in con junction with the local historical society or similar body Both the provincial and local bodies should be empowered to delay demolitions for up to one year During that period the legislation should require them to consult the Ontario Heritage Foundation conservation authorities and other government bodies and private persons who might help preserve the threatened building It should also allow municipalities to buy all or part of the threatened buildings and later turn them over or sell them to whomever they deem fit to preserve them The legislation should also provide for the transfer of development rights for an historic site to nearby property This would allow a builder to make up his loss of the use of the historic property by being allowed higher use on his other site The heritage legislation should also make provision for the preservation of whole districts of importance and to areas districts or complete communities of outstanding architectural or historic value can create problems The need for designation for areas and the adoption of special conservation policies has been recognized in Europe and the United States and In the Province of Quebec 11 should be in Ontario as well Whats wrong with the post office The province is currently preparing a list of certain preConfederation buildings which it thinks worth preserving In considering Its protective legislation it should also make provision for each municipality to prepare a list of buildings with local significance The legislation should require owners of provmcially designated buildings to obtain the Whats going on within the Canadian postal service asks of Newmarket in a letter to the editor this week Mrs received five letters on Jan all mailed the same day from points as widely separated as Scarboro Ontario and Ramsey on the Isle of Man Why she wants to know does it take the same time four days for a letter to travel over mites as it does for one to come the miles from Metro Toronto We too have often wondered We can report similar experiences For instance the office of Bill Hodgson at Queens Park mailed a brown envelope to The Era on Dec It arrived Jan Weve heard of mail delays but It wasnt too long ago that new look postal service was guaranteeing us singleday delivery from Toronto Soon it appears well be lucky if they guarantee us single week delivery -profile- Hes been a milk man for years lly JANET AHNKTT Forty years in the dairy business yet still learning something every day Today Peter Large operational manager for Dairies in Newmarket looks back at his career says its been a good living i He Now were working mil of a plant which was set up is producing plant Weve got to set up more efficient depots for distribution and evolve means for handling the product witli a minimum of effort When is a milk pi int Peter was the plant manager With a crew of 12 he supervised the production of milk from the farms through every step Id the finished bottled A pHl of his work was quality control and this aspect til llie work he enjoyed Milk is a very perishable fond he says It is to he safe gu Hit Mine it leaves the farmer and before Handling has to be carefully supervised of equipment is the big things and oilier lads will will Mr I m- ilsi uYi lrlliiK lluit 11 111 1 ULll IS iiy hoy But for the OMB I might have designed the ship of state The Ontario Municipal Board has ruined my chance for immortality The ruling on the Aurora ad ministration complex may have made a tot of sense and been the right ruling etc but it just killed my chances of becoming a hero Let me explain The board held hearings in Aurora recently to hear complaints about the proposed ad ministration complex which will be shared by I the town and the York County school board The building some said would be ruined in the first Hazel type storm that came along because it will be located on flood plain and is straddling a creek The OMB ruled otherwise and has told both parties to go ahead and build the dull civic centre complex straddling Ike dam old creek Had they turned it down I was prepared to with my fantastic idea help everyone and become in no small way immortal Would you like to hear my plan anyway I thought you might Its really quite simple and ihey tell me that all really brilliant ideas are simple Isnt that nice The town of Aurora and the York County Board of Education had they been turned down by the could have done what one large hotel chain has Buy a boat and turn it into a floating hotel I dont mean a little house boat or even one of your larger yachts mean something like the Queen Mary Where do you think the Queen Mary is now Shes docked permanently in Angeles where one of the international hotel chains is making a fortune using Iter staterooms as hotel rooms and turning all the cabin boys the little nippers into bellhops Before you scoff at this idea as being patently Insane just think of some of the ad vantages of having the town offices and the school board headquarters on a boat First the safely factor If some of those skeptics are correct and we another storm just like Hazel the Ship of Stale as like to call would be in no danger It would be silting in the creek and theyd just pull up the gangplank when the water was high enough lo float something the size of Queen Mary This is where the real fun comes in They could anchor and remain in Die same area or set course for another section he region Just think of haw envious the people of Newmarket would bo when Ihey looked out in Fairy Lake and saw the Board of and the Aurora town council blithely sailing along while Ihey debated any number contentious Issues The Board in particular could chart a course which would take them to many areas of he legion and them in touch with parents who are loo to go all the way to Aurora talk to a floating hoard room Im sure many people would alt end meetings even when the ship is drylncked If lhat storm does occur citizens could be muted on a mystery tour As the ship Is expected to be on large side of the extra meeting or banquet rooms might be turned Into temporary classrooms for areas In the region which are experiencing overcrowding Schools and teachers would of course tako advantage of this unique and Im sure it would replace the Ontario Science Centre as an attraction to be bused or boated to To the town of Aurora the floating municipal building would be as famous as the annual Dominion Day Holiday Other municipalities would flock see the ship I Prince Edward Island which Is on the sea does not have a floating municipal building How about that Mayor Buck Admittedly some taxpayers might become a little cheesed off they went to pay their taxes only find out that the big rain last night moved the town offices to Newmarket for a And candidates for town council in future would have to add another qualification to their election planks Theyd have to be able eager fully qualified have the time available and own a ten horse outboard to get to council meetings Well it was a great idea and it would have put the town the board and me on the map But the dull unimaginative OMB ruined all that I even knew about a ship they might have been able to get cheap from Hollywood It was slightly damaged hear while being used to make a movie They called it the Posledon
