THE ERA Servint County Sine 1852 hJ iniir at St what by Inland Publiihing Co Li yea I cop h TERRY WALLACE Municipal housing land banks A step forward It would appear local municipalities will soon be in the housing development business with their own land banks This decision follows news that regional governments would have the power now vested at Queens Park to approve housing subdivisions in local municipalities Both steps are designed to ease the provinces housing crisis and both are forward Provincial Treasurer John White told representatives of regional municipalities last week that the Ontario Cabinet had approved in principle the proposal for municipalities to get into the development business The details of this cabinet decision will likely be revealed at a I meeting in Toronto on Nov Municipalities for the first time will be able to buy parcels of land for future housing and then sell or lease them for less than private developers would be able to do The proposal is much the same as the present legislation which permits municipalities to buy land for industrial use and then sell or tease it for private use But more important the latest proposal for municipal land banks for housing gives cities towns and townships much more control of where and how they want their to It also gives a municipality a better chance for such things as urban renewal Old area of town could be purchased by the council us In conjunction with a private developer turned into an area of modern houses or apartments Rundown industrial areas could be pur chased and converted to a mixture of reaidwtUl and commercial developments The Era believes it is not the intent of the Provincial Government of municipalities to get Into the subdivision development business The provinces intent la for municipalities to pur chase land where they want to see the housing go and then turn It over to the private sector for It ultimate development The two latest government proposals speeding up subdivision approvals and municipal land banks will do two things It will curb the spiral of housing lot costs and make more homes available faster And it might conceivably make new homes available to people of modest Incomes Congratulations fellows Creek Congratulations to the members of the Newmarket Rays Gulf team on winning the Canadian Major Fastball Championship The Newmarket team won the championship after a long season It was a season which saw them win the championship of their Ontario Fastball League division a division in which teams from much larger communities competed It was a season which saw them win their league championship by besting teams from such large communities as Toronto St Catharines Burlington London and others of similar size It was a season In which Newmarket used players who learned their ball in the area and continue to live in the area It was a season which proved once again that Newmarket is one of the best sports com munities in Canada Creek Area was I opened on Saturday hut weather on the weekend kept he crowds The area Is a favorite spot for with faculties for aid Area opened Iff Bobby and Billie hustled us all John loll PROFILE LONGFORD Pioneer descendant dislikes York system of government It became unmistakably clear about do For there on the magic eye stood superior speed and strength occasionally humiliating at his own game of lob and let lob It was gratifying in a perverse sort of way to see the chauvinistic blabbermouth silenced so decisively However the TV commentary was nearly enough to move even the most ardent King fan to root for Rosemary Casals called on by ABC to uphold the feminine side of the socalled liberation or whether the gals should be forever exiled to the kitchen bedroom and maternity ward No it was simply a matter of money The oldest and proudest principle in the foundation of western culture good old American greed two for Meanwhile male analyst Gene Scott eminently fair in his observations Of course as the evening wore on he had little choice Im looking very bad Howard he commented at one point while masticating a mouthful of crow He had picked in straight sets a million bucks which isnt bad for a 55year -old- spectacle The carried to by Like millions of others I was a victim of the hustle- can count on one hand the times Ive watched tennis on TV for more time than required to miss a commercial on another other things beautiful people are obliged to do when the TV cameras are aimed their way Thirty thousand spectators madly clapping screaming and stamping with each point All this for a sport where a observer traditionally applauds by holding one hand stationary and demurely tapping the other against it Conventional decorum gave way to ripsnorting pandemonium and everybody had a docile countenance during the time it took to whale of a good time which as King observed banish Karl Maiden and return Jean to afterwards was a good thing for tennis But what did it all prove Simply notlung to terms of the battle of the sexes It snowed that on a particular night a particular woman aged at for a sevenminute period starting at when the regularly scheduled network up mysteriously appeared on the tube Great thundering oaths emanated from my normally play tennis better than men It didnt do anything for the overall struggle of women to be considered human equals with men for athletes In this culture are generally regarded Had won It would have been just as pointless For me his most alienating comment was that he was taking on Billie Jean on behalf of all the men whose wives wont let them out of the house to play cards or booze it up the boys it is doubtful that any marriage plagued by that kind of perverse domination by either partner would have been substantially modified by a victory But in terms of what was most important him Bobby Riggs was a phenomenal success He made half a million dollars a sub stantial portion of the western world and made all the world his stage Kings cheques arent likely bounce for awhile either A glimpse of her true principles came through halfway through the match Thursday in a TV commercial in which she and Jack Kramer both endorsed Wilson tennis racquets That after she demanded thai Kramer be banished from the com mentators list because Jack and Jean have long been at loggerheads aver womens tennis King apparently suffers no moral twangs at reaching into the same till with Kramer however Jean said before he match hat she believes in Ihe women movement as long as
