downtown in Toronto to reach their offices that they are creating traffic am parking problems Toronto Transit Com mission s new chairman Karl says Mr Mallette suggests that one way to eliminate some of Torontos downtown problems would be to eliminate these and other job op portunities in the city core Hurrah for Karl Weve been saying the same thing for years up here i sp but assessmentpoor York their extensive parking needs It was just a year ago that almost the thing was being said by Newmarket Mayor Bob Forhan to York Regional Council He wanted York council to convene a meeting between provincial and federal government representatives to see if some of those gracious new government buildings which seem to be springing up all over the city couldnt be allotted to areas a little north of Steeles Ave And last September Mr the pointing out to the regional council that York going to be in for a tough selling job to locate factories around the Pickering Airport If Queens Park and Ottawa would build some of their new office buildings in York they would keep Mr Mallette happy he wouldnt have all those cars crowding his streets and parking lots the civil servants would probably be just as happy to work here because they can buy new homes in the city anyway and Mr and his friends would be pleased because the new buildings would provide the assessment they are looking for Repeal this asinine bylaw Newmarkets antinoise bylaw is asinine The bylaw as it now stands forbids any noise at any time of the day and anybody can call the police and have it enforced The police must enforce the bylaw because that is their job But they have no power to decide if a person is breaking the bylaw if someone complains They must either warn the offender to stop the noise or lay a charge if the complainant wants them to Here are seme recent examples of how ridiculous Newmarkets antinoise bylaw is A birthday party attended by some dozen or so couples resulted in a Fine and conviction for the husband of the wife who was celebrating her birthday Police went to the house following a complaint at pm The annual Peter Gorman Swimming Pool Swim Night was visited by police after a com plaint of excessive noise at pm The policeman told the group singing and playing their musical instruments they must stop or face a charge The annual synchronized swim meet at the pool was called off because the noise of the music offended someone The swim ming takes place between seven and eight- oclock in the evening At this rate the upcoming Algonkian Festival could be called off because the noise might bother some person The annual Santa Parade could be stopped if some person complained of Santas ho- i Thepolice cannot and should not be blamed for any action they take in respect to Newmarkets antinoise bylaw They are only enforcing the law The blame for this asinine and ridiculous bylaw lies with a previous Newmarket Town Council Earthquake shakes up Newmarket couple in Mexico UNCHANGED RIVER BANKS The flats along the Holland River between now their days In natural state Timothy St and Queen St have changed little numbered Parts are being filled and the since Indian furtrading canoes paddled up balance will soon be incorporated into a town the stream to the trading post at what Is now park system stretching the length the town Water and Main streets 158 years ago But Cole photo It started out as the kind of holiday we always enjoy avoiding the tourist spots and city night life and driving through country villages going where the road led us in Mexico Some of the villages had not had a tourist in years and we found the Mexican Indians friendly and helpful Americans they asked and we told them Canadians Ah yes some recognized our maple leaf pins some told us Canada was very far further than the United States and quite a number smiled and said cryptically paulanka Not speaking much Spanish it took us some time to realize that they meant Paul Anka the singer clothed statues standing in the midst of tiny villages of wood and adobe houses and streets built almost perpendicular on the hillside The people smiled waved and City fo find the city to me of the from the small inns we had stayed in the villages but after 2000 KM of driving we were tired and went to bed early HIS This space Is reserved for the comments opinions and drawings of The Eras readers Please feel tree to send yours Re along All wo ask is that you include your name and address e passed and did their best to fathom our haltin Spanish One road we took went up the mountains past opal mines and eventually petered out to a rough sandy track According to our map the road ended some miles further up at a village called St Joachim so hot and thirsty we drove on Finally we reached the village only to find there was not a soul about We parked the car and walked along After 10 minutes driving we came to the top of the mountain ridge and there before us was a fantastic scene It was a forest area with a tiny lake in the middle and the entire village children three and four generations of a family were having a great time at the villages annual Fiesta We clambered weakkneed out of the truck and our horseman from the village cantered up His mother wife sisters children et spread blankets for us gave us drinks and generally adopted us At one time or another during the Canada they pointing out to beside me ceiling plaster My husband sat up and the entire room started to creak and tremble and sway The chandelier was swinging from side to side I think its an earthquake muttered my husband I shot out of bed and shook my son awake Get up its an earthquake He never got up so quickly in of his years Getting an excited 12yearold to wrap up and trying to find something warm to wrap around ourselves was Suite a job in the dark the lights were out and ic emergency generator had not started to work yet when a 2a storey hotel is swaying like a nightmare ride at the CNE is no laughing matter Eventually the emergency lights went on and the alarm bells started clanging We Thanks to tournament helpers to the many people in Newmarket and district who helped in many ways sure when we held the Legion to say anywhere they opened up their homes these visitors 1 have always found the people of Newmarket to be very and with the attitude shown once again Ha welfare he nut practice io pay our high state gone loo far of he finest Town i shut tight none of the usual of Mexican village life not a dog barking nor a childs voice We were nonplussed and just stood in the square thirsty and tired Suddenly we heard the sound of horses hoofs and a horse and rider came galloping into view The rider reined his horse and spoke to us We could not understand his Spanish and he spoke no English He was obviously a man of authority in the village quite well dressed and carrying a beautiful riding crop He managed to make us understand we were to go with him and so with nothing to lose we followed him Round the bend in the road we saw a pick up truck circa and very in the back were half a dozen Indians with baskets of to the guitarists and sipped beer and Tcquilla with them and eventually they fed us rice tacos and succulent sheep meat cooked for hours in banana leaves in a hole in the ground Finally we watched the village boys lightdresses curlers and face stumbled along in the hall light to the stairway The elevators were not working of course and rumour had it that people were stuck in them It turned out the rumour was unfounded as the elevators had a safely device which locked them into the nearest floor with doors open in an emergency One man Insisted on staying in the doorway of his room telling everyone it recently To Mr who was in charge of umpires and did a job to billets for about boys to Mrs Noel Edgar who helped Iter and to husbands the fine Town should have power to act Mr Dan advocated safest place He would not budge and so we left working staff who had ho recently bylaw for The head man urged us into the back of the truck and we all drove off There was no way of communicating with our fellow passengers gravity Our only comfort was the smiles ana nods of the driver who I felt would have done better to have kept his eyes on the road them understand we were not used to mountain driving on unpaved roads around hair pin bends with no guard rails and a 7000 foot drop to a chorus of Adios and encouraging shouts echoing down the mountain Wc didnt come across another Fiesta but wherever we went in the villages and towns we with big smiles and friendly help- minds as to whether we should stay in the small town of Orizaba for longer than our planned one night but reluctantly still swaying of its own momentum being built we later found out on a floating base for just such an occasion We hurried down the stairs the lady behind me praying audibly and my husband whispering wise cracks like maybe we should start singing nearer my God to thee Not very comforting The lobby was crowded when we arrived and hear ambulance bells in the distance and it tricky walking on the sidewalk in the dark as al the manhole covers and gratings on the Br openings had popped In the See EARTHQUAKE page li I I It visitors I offer my of individual citizens I lis lawn or fix Ins Finally I would like ink very much people the hospital is going members or had capsule from York Manor was of great youngster growing up in this area I got a very bad impression of the and heard stories about what went on inside that building So it is not surprising that many persons of my age recall these impressions when they hear the words York Manor But looking back 1 suppose the county council of felt they were doing a great servi ce to society o build the At least it gave those outcasts of society a roof over their heads at taxpayers expense of course The way things are going today il makes you wonder if wc havent gone too far though We started back in by paying our taxes those people who couldnt work or wouldnt work or had other problems Now it lust- io support all kinds of people whether really need it or not Young people many of them not taxpayers themselves have come to expect government handouts for all sort of projects It really makes you wonder when you v then government spends give young people do with their lime Yet every day the advertisements for many jobs which seem to go begging at a time when everyone is talking about the unemployment problem we have The people who wont work handouts The longer It keeps on the more young people are going to lake it for granled The people who do an honest days work the taxpayers end up paying the but just like they always Theres plenty of work available if these young people would just lower themselves to get their hands dirty or work up a sweat once in awhile with our welfare slate SENIOR CITIZEN The white knights ride to protect the mayor of King Hey Its comforting to know that the Aurora Banner staff has pledged to see that no one at York Region pushes Marg around In an editorial last week the Banner said it would not allow anyone to tie and gag her I was at that meeting and I dont think there was any evidence to support that kind of statement as I said in this space last week Frankly Im surprised ate the Banner which in this case appears to have let Itself be used by the Mayor of King After picking the Banner to plant her charges against the engineering department she turned on that paper in her nondefence of the statements In her opening remarks she said I think we all know that the papers do distort do take things out of context sometimes This is the person whom the Banner swears to defend No one wants to see the right to question and comment stifled or curtailed at the Region Some though shouldnt run off at the mouth without some evidence to back up their com That was quite a picture of Dennis Park in last weeks Era A rather forlorn looking pile of playground equipment shot through kneehigh weeds The nearcreation of an instant recreation area last spring died to the joy Im sure of a handful of local residents Please note I said handful you know small group At no time did I accuse everyone in Eagle Hills of being narrow- minded and elitist The Dennis Park plan is now proceeding on a reduced scale over the next few years Reduced ie no ball diamonds The original plan the press coverage of a public meeting held to discuss it and this columnists comments caused some controversy at the lime In the period since I havent changed my opinion of the whole affair to any great extent Mike one of the sanest voices beard during that controversy slipped a little I think when he accused the Era including my com ments of being narrowminded in its coverage We didnt he said mention that much of the uproar was caused by the fact that many residents were unaware of a zoning change af fecting the park Said change made the park a community park while many residents expected it to be developed as a neighborhood park That may be The fact remains that recreation areas are spread all about this town near places where others live We for the most part grin and bear It Council eventually decided to locate the active sports portions of the plan in a new downtown complex This occurred after a second public meeting at which the residents in at tendance voted to allow one baseball diamond reduced parking facilities and no concession booths By then the damage had been done I wonder what would have happened if the The third annual festival is fast approaching This year its being held earlier Sept and organizers hope the weather will be kinder than it was last season An extra note of excitement has been added with the release this week of a National Film Board production on our Citizens Band The band will be in concert on the Friday of the festival As one of the last remaining town bands in existence the band has put the town on the map It is also another link with our historic past When the band plays its not hard to close ones eyes and imagine what It used to be like when earlier citizens listened and watched while the town went through its early growing pains When you go to remember its more than com roasts clowns binge and some fun Its a wendeserved bit of self indulgence that helps to maintain the very special feeling most of us have for town When the last hotdog is wafted down a youngsters throat and works department begins the massive cleanup well all go home with the conviction for a little while at least that the big city life hasnt caught up with us yet Speaking of Last year the rain forced cancellation of a very original idea of Jack Groves then on the festival committee Jack thought the mayor should officially open the event by shooting a flaming arrow into Fairy Lake Dunmark Archery a local company donated a very expensive bow a quiver of arrows and even some fuel to light said arrows Danny Siminiuk of Dunmark offered to give the mayor a crash course in the fine art of sending aloft naming arrows I think it would be a disgrace to let their generosity go down the drain It would be just awful to let unique idea lit gathering dust What about It Mayor Robert If you dear reader think it snot a bad Idea caU the municipal office and say to TeH Bob I told you to call
