But there are no decent roads to Georgina and there does not appear to be any planned Mayor Dales lamented And to top it off the present inadequate east- west road system is in a bad state of disrepair And these repairs must be made at the expense of the Georgina taxpayer even though much of the damage is caused by cars owned by Metro area residents Mayor Dales plea for an extension of the last week Speaking in his customary semiaudible tones the chairman of councils health and social services committee carped at the press because it doesnt print York Regions welfare statistics He has asked the press to do so time and again he moaned and the blackguards just ignore horn The press doesnt like to pubish good things Mayor said tearfully Just to show that there are goodhearted souls in our generally sardonic ranks we herewith acknowledge publicly that York Region does have an excellent record in the welfare department Less than one per cent 76 to be precise of ago Last year 135 employable heads of families were on welfare This year the number is down to There are 217 unemployables on welfare now compared with last year The region saved almost by putting former welfare your name and address Campbell handicap failed to slow him down Perhaps the nicest thing about working for a newspaper is having an excuse to meet and talk with interesting people Theres a real kick to be had meeting the dignitaries the the newsmakers hell have a certain enduring courage call it guts if you will that makes you want to point to him as an example for all modernday moaners See look what can be done even with two strikes ELMAN CAMPBELL vou shared one thing in common Theyve made their marks despite the incredible handicap of blindness Most recent of the three is Elman Campbell merchant of Main St Newmarket years a successful businessman in our area the better off you cutting ice on Fairy Lake the GlenvillePond and Bogarttown Pond he recalls the hop fields and their harvest for the brewery here in Newmarket and shops with the high stools for the customers and red plush carpets he used to skate on the ponds with other kids behind a horsedrawn scraper and he played ball no leagues then and a lot of tennis Everyone had a court Built Elm St Keep up against Utter was quite upset to Secondary whistle Theweatherw School in Aurora Dear Newmarket for gates on Davis Dr at the end of the decided to wonder how it happened and how it could have been prevented Did the flashing red lights or hear the trains whistle If the train was so close upon them why didnt Charge not their dogs Young Engineer But it couldnt have been any cinch that first change way back in 1930 when as a young chemical engineer he had to give up his chosen career because of an accident barely five weeks after graduation There was an explosion his eyes were busted up as he put it and that was that the end of a career barely begun With characteristic fortitude however it wasnt long until Mr Campbell turned those early depression years into the beginning of a new career Hiring a young teacher in Newmarket who like many at that time was out of a teaching job Mr Campbell paid her the magnificent sum of an hour to read to him from books on business management Finance organization and management I boned up on all that stuff for two years out of three The first year I mostly just felt sorry for myself But when its all boiled down he summed up for The Era the better the education you So stationery and more specifically school supplies instead of chemistry has been Mr Campbells sfpccialty for nearly years And last month when The Era paid a visit his Main St Store in Newmarket was once again in a state of change Mr Campbell was getting ready with obvious relish to accommodate the grade 13 students In the area with supplies You can tell he likes young people He mikes a point of liirirm them to work in his store Sold school book He recalled for The Era an earlier day when all he sold were school supplies That was back under the old school section system when the secretary of each school would go out and buy all the supplies for his particular area Then in 1965 this section system was dissolved There was one school board for each township and business started to slip Buyers started calling for tenders and businessmen like Mr Campbell had to compete vith the wholesalers He built all the houses on Elm St said Mr Campbell proudlyand those along Park as well as a few on Millard and Victoria He was apprenticed by Jacques and Hayes examples of their craftsmanship are now prized antiques His grandson went on to recall that hed spend one year making all the doors sash and then the next year building the house Last year Mr Campbell and his wife Elizabeth Betty celebrated their wedding anniversary With his anniversary in business coming up this February Mr Campbell believes hes been in business under his own name longer than any other man in Newmarket There are other names he told The Era but theyre different generations The question of exact age he goodnaturedly avoided admitting only that the receives the old- age pension He believes people in Newmarket take him to be a good deal younger than he is And its this reporters guss that they do for his vitality and enthusiasm seem boundless first attempt 1 Hie of this taking a let them run loose as they hate to see a dog
