The Era Newmarket Ami Wet I IB Leisure Lines Recreation Director DAN SHANNON It would be very difficult to try to all of the events and activities that go on in Newmarket over a period of tune However this column will from time to time serve as a method of com with the public concerning recreation matters During the past months we have seen countless activities ranging from sailing schools to ball tournaments to lawn bowling tennis and crafts One program initiated this summer that has met with a great deal of popularity is our Major Sport program This program offered to girls and boys between the ages of five to 16 has included such sports as lacrosse softball track and field soccer tennis and ringette It was in no way to compete with the traditional minor sport programs of soccer baseball etc but a program that would give boys and girls an opportunity to participate in organized recreational play where winning was not a prerequisite or even expected and where participation and enjoyment were the intangibles for which everyone was striving This program operates Monday through Friday at the various Newmarket playgrounds and arenas Its success largely has depended upon the attitudes of the participants as well as the instructors We are indeed fortunate to have Greg Gavin heading up the Major Sport area with assistance from Jeff Macoun Kim Sorensen Jim Yardy Kelly Smith and Roger It is our goal to emphasize par ticipation and enjoyment and if com petition comes into it we accept it Com petition is a natural phenomenon which cannot be withheld or in any way digressed However with competition sometimes comes a very strong feeling on the part of participants and officials that winning is the ultimate when in reality enjoyment and satisfaction should be the ultimate goal Too often we place ourselves and our teams in a position where they have to produce I am reminded of a story of a Superbowl football game whereby a player was sitting in a locker room quivering with fear of failure The coach simply said Do you realize that there are eight hundred million people in China who couldnt care less whether you win or lose this game I think we as officials and parents should relay this sometimes to our local sports attitudes However our Major Sport program is itself not a complete summer program We are also offering to the community a sophisticated craft program for children at the Craft Centre on Main Street as well as for the fourth year a Summer Day Camp program These programs have been met with an overwhelming number of registrants and definitely point out that many people in Newmarket have accepted and are accepting the fact that the Recreation Department is offering something for all types and interests The Day Camp does have a few openings for the weeks ahead Again this year he department is of fering a basic playground program at eight different parks throughout the town The activities on these playgrounds consist of a pot pourri of activities ranging from Arts and crafts to sports and special events Of course there are ample opportunities for adults to get involved in sports as well One very good example of this is the ladies softball league that is now operating within our town Under the capable direction of Jack Rank of Newmarket a ladies league is now entering into high gear and all indications are that the league will meet with even greater success next year The Newmarket Tennis Club is again experiencing fantastic growth A number of topnotch tournaments have been held within the community and the tennis club is indeed to be congratulated on their very fine effort in administering tennis The outstanding growth in numbers of par ticipants indicates that more tennis courts will be needed in Newmarket in the near future It is indeed a very healthy sign Riders draw judges praise KESWICKUpset victories including top performances by riders from the host club highlighted the Golden Stallion Acres Horse Show
