THE ERA County Since R HASKELL TERRY CARTER JOHN 1 Let committee hear Dennis Park opinions diamonds from the homes rapped because of the people living adjacent the site Uncertain concerns because nobody is whether the disadvantages of a park with ball diamonds located there as opposed to a smaller neighborhood park will affect proposal is to develop a 17acre park with a selection of recreation activities in it ranging from baseball to chess The park would be centred around the present undeveloped Dennis Park located on the edge of the Holland River valley on the south of the Eagle Hills area As a community park Dennis would also be a key ball diamonds and the park designer i the diamonds senior league ball anyway Would the noise made by the kids and back yard type ball players who would then be using the diamond and by the few friends and relatives who turn out to watch reallybe offensive Remember they cant play after dark And what about the fact that the people living next to the park are obviously there by choice a rely valley If the plan must be scrapped because of the lion there is a very good chance that the fiveacres of industrial land which under the proposal would be added to the park would be sold and the money used to develop a community park elsewhere For make no mistake about it Newmarket does need another community park The rub here is that there simply isnt another site available as ideal for a community park at this Opposition to the plan came mostly from residents living adjacent to the park several said they had paid a premium house abutting the park and it centred around their fears that the noise lights cars and refuse from two ball diamonds on the park would disturb their peace ft should be noted here however neighboring fairgrounds Park Newmarkets other community park havent complained although this park has lights The proposed parking lot is directly off the Cane Parkway on from the homes Is it likely to be the cause of more noise the Caveat emptor the old legal maxim buyer beware hardly seems adequate here They knew when they bought the park was there Hundreds of Newmarket children play ball every summer and hundreds of adults both men and women belong to amateur leagues which get them playing as much as they would like to this summer There simply arent enough ball diamonds It seems to us that other areas of town have gladly accepted community facilities such as the Hoi lings worth Civic Arena and the new swimming pool because of the advantages they offer and that the people in the Dennis Park area should feel the same However because we are considering a community park we also feel that the people of this area should not be the only ones consulted A community park Is a park for the whole town and a park which is to become a key portion of the Holland Valley system has a parlicular relevance for the whole town Also the town as a whole is carrying the debt on the fiveacre We hope supporters of the project from anywhere in town will not be in making their feelings known in writing or otherwise to the parks Old Ontario stone Lake who Its pulpit tor In oily hod time becoming Il often preach THE Readers threatened by bureaucracy A reply on computer have investigated he allegations made in the loiter to the editor of which appeared York Regional Council is to be commended for advancing funds to keep the regions four family life centres operating The centres were in danger of closing following a Provincial Government decree that there would be a monthlong freeze on funds until a needs study had pay the salaries of some staff members In advancing some Regional Council will keep the family life centres operating until what ap pears to be a bureaucratic is straightened Some Queens Park civil servants seem to think that the family life centres in York are overstaffed and in fact four such centres are too many We cannot understand how staffers some of whom are parttime and four centres in such a huge area as York Region are too many We are sure this fallacy will be pointed out to the provincial investigating team by members of the regions health and social serlvces staff And then the there are a couple of Items locally that 11 thaw these boys are picked from house leagues where about twothirds of hockey players compete Its a year chance for them to represent their own areas against other towns and Is a good experience After its over they return to their respective leagues the tournament team disbanded Some of the areas call them B teams some house league allstar while Newmarket tab their representatives tournament teams The tournament Is not sanctioned by Ontario Minor Hockey Association which is the ruling body of allstar teams in the province IVE SAID HERE BEFORE THAT THE has become too big and ends to forget that minor hockey is for kids They continue prove me right In the past Newmarket has enjoyed sponsoring this tournament without the sanction of the To their credit theyve looked the other way In the put nils year are not A directive has gone out to all learns in the division of the which threatens any carded teams participating in our tournament with expulsion from the league As some of Hie par risl until the kid on In iln people unit of the if they tot an all si also learned that a verbal directive was given referees who have cards carrying a threat They cm lose their ion If they referee any of the games in Ibis Many of men I understand have said they will ignore the threat and officiate when Our teams In preparing for arranged a few exhibition games against all- star teams On at least two occasions a local rep ordered the teams off the ice just prior to the game They werent allowed to play even an exhibition against an unrecognized team Why cant the just continue to run their own kingdom where they only affect a small percentage of Why do they threaten the last remaining ves tige of minor hockey for kids I suspect because Another local mutter hud come my and it loo has some sports and real tonal lm plications A public meeting was held last week which plans for parks and recreation program were Residents of the life cen tres In the form of a grant The money will keep the centres operating until the province decides to shore cost or kill the plan or until June whichever comes first Sounds like an auto warranty Dr Owen Slingerland the Regional Medical Health officer said during the lengthy debate that he had received a verbal assurance that the province with almost per cent certainty would That means they too will contribute to keep the centres operating If my memory serves me correctly Dr made a similar statement when the region tjriginelly agreed to njrftafenUy life centres to tuns of made
