gradually getting a facelifting partly through the efforts of the town administration and partly by pri vate enterprise We hope this increasing pride in our town will be reflected in the care taken Reduced fares good idea lot will stimulate improvements in the backs stores in that block A new arena front which will be completed retirement community Home for the Aged Ontario Housings Senior Citizens apartments as well as York Manor and a great many private rsing homes 11 has also proved a popular The reduced bus fare program we feel will be appreciated by many of our senior citizens We hope council implements it quickly Because half of the financial loss incurred in operating the bus service which is paid by town taxpayers is returned to the munici pal coffers through a provincial grant the bene fits of the reduced fare program will far out weigh the costs to town ratepayers I- John River Dr old Ontario Park itck Ontario of Trini much of hi pure lost disappearing Church Anglcan that Jim is not going to run for Council this year was not altogther a surprise Yet I for one am sorry that he Is not going to serve on coun cil In many respects he is the workhorse of the present council But there is more to it than merely a hard working councillor not seeking reelection Jim dynamism got things done in Township In that respect the people of the town ship owe him much more than the a year salary he receives as a councillor It began when he retired from his building business years ago and moved to Keswick He became involved in the community there and served on North Gwillimbury Council from 1984 until regional government came in Since then he has represented ward two and has been the chairman of the engineering mittee To understand the significance of that committee one must realize that almost every thing apart from parks and recreation comes under engineering Jim look on the task of running the engineering department and there arc few peo ple who can say that he has done anything less than a fine job His department includes roads snow removal garbage collection disposal site sidewalks street lighting drainage and fire de partments That department spends most of the tax money in the township and is the hardest to administer since it is so vast and spread out There are many technical aspects that have to be watched carefully All in all it is a demand ing task Illime councillor and his BILL SMILEY Round two disaster three There is a movie called Suddenly One Summer something like that This is more or less the way 1 feel towards the end of this For one thing the weather has been gen erally rotten My heart has ached for the camp ers the tenters as temperature drops the winds blow and I turn up the thermostat on the fur nace As I write its more like late October than August But there is nothing much I can do about that its happening to everybody However some body is definitely out to get me I dont know whether its the Lord fate or the devil But its too obvious to be merely coincidental It or they started with my car Almost six months ago a gentleman backed into the front of it Hes a mechanic and promised to have it fixed rather than pay the almost exor bitant insurance rale It is still not fixed Not his fault We made a date for July 31st and my wife busted her ankle and in the confusion I forgot But its still not fixed Next I was at a public gathering where there were a lot of cars parked Somebody and he was not a gentleman snuggled up to close to me The only calling card he left was a deep indentation in my left front door Third And that was my wifes fault not mine She was yakking at full steam somewhat like an organ with all the stops out It happened at a highway motel where wed had lunch I backed up knowing there were no cars there and hit a light standard that shouldnt have been there It was solid brick It made a boom erang of my back bumper There went another hundred bucks where Ill go along with Ralph Nader adult male hummingbird at miles per Well to cut short story long the car Is much of a disaster area Front grill hash la Chrome strips buckled and ripped off bumper bummer As we all know accidents come in threes Well I had my three and thought whoever was out to get me should relax for a while Not so As I mentioned my wife broke her ankle and a week later I broke my toe She groans and hobbles around in a walking cast 1 groan and hobble around I never realized before just how important a big toe is in the process of ambulation Something like a fish trying to off Oh a jolly lively place around our house We should he out at the beach doing a fancy crawl stroke calling cheerfully to each other about how terrific the water is today In stead were stuck in the house doing a fancy crawl up and down stairs and calling hatefully about such cherry things as getting the garbage out doing the washing preparing dinner Do you know what happens to a couple of love birds in a cage who start getting on each others nerves One of them pecks the other to death Then eats him or her Well Im pretty tender and my wife is very tough so Im keep- Thus as a hard working councillor he will be missed But that is not the full story As a reporter at Council meet ings for the past 18 months I have never failed to bo amazed at the wit that councillor displays His comments are usually the high point of meetings His goodnatured ribs are usually right on And thus a dull council meeting is made not only more interesting but even entertaining at times He also docs not waste words when he speaks He says his piece then sits down In short he is the kind of man who is an asset to the council and to the township Mem bers of the township staff also think the world of him They like his genuine interest in the daytoday administration and his energy and initiative The other members of council know he gets things done The lights for the ball diamond in Keswick are a good example of that Council put out tenders that came back way over what had been budgeted for the lights Councillor offered to find a way to get it done within the budget He was given the responsibility and in a short time found a way to get the job done for Hie budgeted figure The lights arc not in yet but with a few changes in how it was to be done they will ho in at the budgeted figure By his own admission Councillor likes to gel tilings dune In fact lie says that lie really dislikes loo much paper work I for one find it refreshing that someone is interested in efficiency in the local government and is inter ested in getting things done A little but selfishly will miss his sharp wit that has livened up council meetings ami will miss his concern for the every day problems of the people of The township will Search
