The Era Newmarket a Oat Wet Hay lift THE ERA DAVID ft HASKELL Serving York County Sim Regional parks will be welcome Amendments to the bill establishing the Government but the purchase was turned areas which are now administered by Region of York which are now before the Pro- down local Conservation Authorities Legislature are most welcome Under the new legislation such similar Local municipalities are protected under Especially welcome is the amendment which tract of land could be purchased by the the new legislation The Region would make for Regional participation in parkland recreation areas tracts of land along the Under present legislation there is no Re gional participation in one of the most import ant aspects In the lives of York residents their leisure time If the amendment is approved and we can see no reason why It wont the Region will be able to acquire and develop huge areas of parkland and recreation areas that would otherwise not be available to the public At present the two senior levels of govern ment are the only levels now developing park land on a large scale Local municipalities are developing park land and recreation areas within their own boundaries on a relatively small scale but are unable because of the huge sums of money involved to develop large tracts A case In point was the situation in Township last month An acre tract of land became available for recreation which was simply too rich for Gcorginas blood Council called In the lakeshore could be purchased on the market They then could be assembled as the years go by into one large South Lake Sinicoe Region The proposed legislation calls for the pos sibility of direct Regional participation in con- lump annual payments to an area municipality In lieu of taxes if called upon to do so It Is hoped once the Legislature approv ed that York Regional Council acts swiftly to implement the purchase and development of recreation land for its residents Most residents have more leisure time but the time is growing less to purchase land for the use of this time Most satisfied with education Eightyfive percent of the parents Interview ed In a newly completed Independent survey done for the Ontario Department of Education expressed satisfaction with the quality of edu cation in the province They did however make several specific points some of which have been cited in these columns from time to time The parents stated Boards that the traditional Three should be em- sent phasized and claimed that writing reading and that it is were weak points in the system Along selves are the same line a majority opposed open space classrooms believing that discipline should be stricter and the quality of school counselling improved They also Indicated that they believ ed current teachers salaries were just about right to insure quality in the teaching pro fession Already there are signs that a number of turning away from the discl and an area supervisor has slated how many students them- to attend the stricter schools STOUFFVIILE TRIBUNE THE Readers ERA served for he comments I wings of The Erosread feel free to send yours c have lost but we still have right of free And watching My magic calculator calculates that this works out donation of less than two cents person Of very few people donated two and obviously many more didnt donate single cent -HIM- Beer mats cure for communications gap I am told over and over again that the ghastly thing about today the failure to communicate I have this pointed out to mo frequently that at times I am Inclined to believe It Yet on deeper consideration 1 find myself thinking that there never was a time when there was more communication between people Often I fear the true trouble Is they have not got anything particular to say and when they have they express It so obscurely that few can understand It When people moan about lack of communication what they really mean lack of direct communication spontane ous communication between two persona Rut there are all kinds of Indirect commu nication today There are the pamphlets dump ed on your doorstep letters to the press Inter views on television and radio billboard and neon advertising badges banners and placards Everyone seems to be communicating in one way or another Granted It is not always clear what exactly which Is seeking to say True tho Vietnam thing is still going on but that Is failure of persuasion not communication a dis tinction which is by many Indirect communication Is In today Take for example birthday cards anniversary cards getwell cards etc They represent the most form of Indirect communication They are merely memos worded by some unknown person and signed by us If we wished to take the time to communicate with someone we car ed for we would write our respects and wish es In a letter express our own sentiments in our own words But then the person we cared for would call us a cheapskate for not buying card Yea Indirect communication appears to be here to stay and the only thing one can do about it now is to choose the particular form which appeals to us most and enjoy it No one will be wildly surprised to learn that my favorite form of communication and the one that I miss most Is the beer mat I have never quite understood why there are no beer mats In this area In England Id the old days half the fun in drinking was rending tho boor mala only odd thing I recall seeing Why ask for donations why not charge admission you ask Because the town will not permit a charge for the fireworks display Why didnt the club members pass tho hat while the display was In progress ask Because the club members were just too darn busy making sure the fireworks being set off safely and for crowds The crowds during the last three years have been around the 4000 mark Donations at gato have around hi- 150 for tho previous two years I wonder why only this year The Chancellors felt they would make a little money this year with draw but as you can see from their thuv exactly I have nevor scon one of their Victoria Day fireworks displays each year friends and neighbors at Mosquito Manor for a mlnlflroworka display If you can call Hie worth of fireworks a minidisplay But many of my friends have soon the local politic Chancellors display each year and hoy say Its a great display It would bo a shame to ace it end I dont know one member of Chancel- no lors Car Club personally but I do know participate in many of communitys about 11 was that tho although tonality clear whon you started seemed to be come more longer you looked at it Boor mats or dripmats as thoy wore some times called used to anything from snuff to fertilizers from motor engines to soa voyages I remember some before war which urged one to Join forces Cant you Just it Youre interviewing a famous hero By way what made you to became a Actually I got tho Idoa from a beer mat In a pub at Bradford There mots which used to nog for safely on bicycles mats with crossword squar es mats with horoscopes mats with vintage cars mats with jokes and poems and various mats of mild Impropriety And In pub I used to frequent I recall a wholo archipelago of mats In shapes of islands among them lilo of Man Malta and the Islo of Wight This 1 believe Is tho answer those who cry for moro communication Is no end to the speculation about what could bo done In the way of beer mats Candidates in the next election might very well consider this medium And it would be a lot mora fun for demonstra tors to write their protests on mats ttnn to trudge up and down In front of some em bassy Even personal messages could bo deliver ed more direct via the beer mot than say In the press Please come home the kids miss you that Is once you know pub Penelope hangs out In Here in Canada the beer mat looms as more of a necessity than it ever did in England Over there where beer was always at room temperature the mat was only meant for clumsy drinkers who couldnt hold the glass steady Deep refrigeration means more condensation on the outside of the glass consequently drib ble So It would seem that there is infinitely more use for beer mats on this continent But even If all dribble were abolished drip- mats would still be a good thing for telling people not to drink too much and to keep an eye on the yellow car with the red light on top And of course to collect annual Santa Clans display each year and It is to mo they Now Years party goers home for a number of years among other things Now they are going with their caps in about the bill you owe I feel It would bo shame to see this display end so Im fishing out of my pocket and it to Chancellors Cor Club Mr Alan Tough Sunnypolnt Drive Newmarket Out t of a float In pension Not bad f 1 Belles of York
