THE ERA Yelk County Sine St Phent R CARTER Ottawas weird and wonderful money programs Thla week Information received that the Federal Government has rejected Op- port unit lei for Youth In thU area Considering what has been approved pre vtouily one wonders why these two projects which seemed to have merit were rejected One of them involved operating a commuter service to northern York Region The other was notation survey of Newmarket In the for case summer work would have been pro to youths living in King and Aurora The latter project would have given work to New xurktt youths as well as providing tome useful Information In both esses the projects were turned en without a reason with each applicant re ceiving the standard form letter from Secretary of Stale Gerard We will not comment on the other weird and wonderful projects the Federal Government I approved for Opportunities for Youth and Local Incentives Program because space does net permit However a case was brought to our Jon last week which merits some comment with a About nine months ago he either left his or wu laid off and had been out of steady rk since During his unemployment period applied for work with a number of employers ho would require his particular craft About the middle of April one of these em ployers wrote him and invited him for an inter view for a job on the west coast His qualifica tions were suitable and he was hired and wu to start work this week He returned home to York Region and de cided to apply for a reestablishment grant thro ugh the Federal Government He travelled to Toronto where he originally registered as being unemployed and laid his cards on the table Well he came up aces First the Canada Manpower official said the government would fly his family to the west coast The man said he would rather take the train as It would be cheaper No said the offic ial well fly you If I take the train it will be cheaper to ship my car said the man Smart thinking said the official we send you out west and your car by train Next the official said what about moving your furniture I was going to arrange that said the man No said the official well look after that The man was about to leave the office when the official him about relocation expenses I guess I could use some replied the man How much asked the official About 300 should do It he replied No said the official youll need The facts are that this man obtained em ployment on his own and was prepared to pay the lions share of the expenses to locate his family In a new home The most he asked for was train fare to the west coast for his family Instead it cost the Canadian taxpayer an estimated to move this family to the coast along with their car their furniture and a little travelling money amounting to Maybe the way to get something from the Federal Government Is not to ask for it but wait until its plopped in your lap Old Ontario John of Dollar for dollar idea has merit This space is reserved or the comments opinions end drawings of The Eras read ers Please feel free to send yours along All we ask is that you include your name and address York Regional Council is correct in its op position to paying a year towards Tor ontos reclamation scheme Council voiced Its opposition when it was learned that it would cost the Regions taxpay ers over a fiveyear period Council also passed a motion introduced by Maricham Councillor Jim Jongeneel that would have the Metro Toronto and Region Conserva tion Authority pay York Region the same amount each year that the Region must pay the Authority In other words for every dollar the Region sends to Metro Metro would have to send the same amount to York This money could be placed in an account for the purchase of Lake Simcoe shoreline as ft becomes available to the public The shoreline would be used for public recreational use And we bet Metro residents will use Lake shoreline more than York residents will use Metros waterfront NEWSROOM NOTES Hellyers Ontario Being the resident Christian at The Era Dr Mark who is chairman of the its and downs and I have felt the prob- group mentioned Saturday that they hope to it creates In many small but significant But last week 1 found my job as a report- dovetailed perfectly with my Christian teTf its On Saturday night I attended the New- ket Mens Christian Fellowship meeting at Heights where Paul was to It was ladles night and people show- up for dinner and to listen to the speakers I really enjoyed myself The meal was fine and the fellowship her own life Miss Minnaker ant and effervescent In telling about how God was moving her life She is an Olympic gym nast and has represented Canada at many Inter national meets enjoyable Unfortunately Mr gave hung hat I would call a political speech rather than pertaining to his own Christian experiences The Mens Christian Fellowship began only The tto of the Mens Fellowship which a large sign behind the head table The relevance and reality of Jesus Christ and Mr speech somehow was out of keeping with that motto He dealt mostly with economic Issues that he felt faced Cana dians but I could not see how he showed the relevancy of Jesus Christ In it Well Sunday morning I attended a service KILL SMIIKY- The plot against our schools Teachers are being lambasted from ail these days poor things As a species they practically harmless But then Is not that of the Immutable laws of our society At- the harmless and tread warily with the rful and the ruthless According to their critics all they are in Is more money This of course Is not of plumbers policemen doctors and den- lawyers and even Indian chiefs garage operators Sure theyre interested in more money at enough to keep up with the galloping cost index But its a lie that money is all they are In- in The great majority is Interested In doing well what they are supposed do educate our children And I cant blame them when they get a sore at the constant usually Ignorant heck of people who dont know what its all Nor can I help feeling a certain kinship some of the more militant young teachers talking about strikes and such A garbage can go on strike a teacher cant The logic The whole business bothers me very little who has been through a war I decade as a weekly newspaper editor has a pretty tough skin But there la something a little sinister in growing Influence of politicians on educa tor purely political reasons And I feel a of alarm when I see a few socalled re- ble daily newspapers frothing at the when the simple word teachers grinding no axe In fact I dont even I hatchet for chopping kindling I lost it It appears to me that a few Machiavellian a have put their pointed heads together added to destroy deliberately our educa te system when you and I went through fir from perfect But It needed re- not defamation It required healing not mad massive surgery The first political step toward chaos occur red when many of the local school boards thr oughout Canada lost their autonomy The Boards were made up of men and women who woutd bust a gut literally to get the best possible edu cation for their own local kids It was far from perfect but It worked Then the provincial governments decided school boards were formed Administrators were appointed who knew nothing of strictly local conditions In many cases not all the school boards became mere rubber stamps for the administrators The latter in turn work hand in glove with the provincial Department of Ed It in turn is responsible to the party in power A nice little ringaround So who Is running what When this was first proposed I prophesied the result increased costs decreased efficiency And I take back not a word of It Ask any tea St Pauls Anglican Church In Newmarket There again the old staid Anglican Church that remember from my youth seemed to have unbent Itself somewhat A folk music group ught was a spiritual revival in the church that has influenced the Anglican Church to intro duce new forms of worship What he said made sense to a certain ex tent but unless the true essence of the Chris tian faith Is present in the individual the ex terior forms really are meaningless More and more traditional churches are finding that mere ly external changes are not enough The revival must come from hearts and minds of those within the Christian commu nity who spread the Good News as Mr borough called it The church has cowed back from significant changes because many people in the church itself are not sure that God really Mr pointed out one signifi cant fact that struck me about Miss and the men in the Mens Christian Fellowship People who believe in Jesus as a personal savi our must be prepared to spread their answer to the world There is a song that says It very well It only takes a spark to get a fire going Soon all those around will warm up to its glowing Thats how It Is with Gods love once youve experienced it You spread his love to everyone you want bill gamble- Two day weekscoming up The way the unions have been acting up lately plus Ottawa s ilsorj approach to the unemployment situation leads one to suppose that the fourday work week is just around the corner The popular is of course that automation threatens to deprive people of jobs and that the only way to have full employment is to have more people working shorten hours At this point I am not too concerned with the strictly economic implications of the four- day week What Im more interested in are the social consequences how our ordinary day- today lives may be affected First of ail believe that the fourday week will usher in the start of the day week in a number of instances just as our current fiveday week results in a four- andahalf day week for some workers As it is today people going away for the twoday week end invariably leave work at noon on Friday to beat the traffic The longer weekend will permit trips a longer distance from home there fore to get a good start and avoided congested Thursdaynoon traffic a man wilt knock off work around am All this of course will mean that we will simply have to get a huge raise in pay In order to afford the cost of gaso line fur the longer trips plus llio cost of enter- fur the ixlra Then the government with pious recitude after a period of spending untold millions on education and almost suggesting that everyone who makes it In Grade 1 should graduate from university takes a sidelong look at the taxpay ers and decides to ptay Jack the Giant Killer Via spending ceilings on education There dont seem to be any spending ceil- IngB on health or welfare But out of one side of Ms mouth through its tame Department of Ed government says Lets have more Innovative daring relevant courses for our students Out of the other side It says Sorry we cant afford that or that or that Something stinks To me it does Oh welt lets raise the taxes on booze smokes and build some more highways and air ports Lets raise tuition fees and cut down on government scholarships and maybe the uni versities wont be so crowded And lets get out the whips and show those ungrateful teachers where they belong back In their cages Belles of York student at Dr GW William SS who plana either to be ess at Toronto In ternational Airport or travel following grade She is on the William Nursing by Robert White winter months which means the school sea son And here I would like to introduce a paradox While the tendency is towarded ren Already educators are talking about long school sessions not shorter ones In any case s a cinch that the kids are going to keep going school on Fridays the lawn Junior instantly complains that the old man has been loafing around the house maybe guzzling beer or watching the tube white he has been slav ing over a hot equation all day Wheres the justice he wants to know In a world where men take it easy and growing children have to his Fridays painting walls cleaning basements and generally working himself to death to keep his kid from complaining And if the unions had kept their big mouths shut he could have been at the office relaxing The longer weekend will have other draw backs It Is generally conceded that we eat mora when are at home than when we are at work This will put an extra burden on the housewife when she shops for food since it will entail purchases for an extra day This In turn will put an even bigger burden on industry since it mean manufacturing bigger refrigerators for storing food bigger supermarket carts for hauling the food out to customers cars and a bigger production of the supplies themselves not to mention the packaging But with every body on a fourday week therell be nobody available to handle all this extra work Theyll ail be away More evening entertaining is bound to re sult There was a time when practically every one worked on Saturdays This meant that Sat urday night was the only suitable night of the week for late parties Nowadays Friday night parties are common Knock off work on Fridays and the Thursday night party will become com monplace too The longer weekend will of course put the typical weekend guest under a greater obliga tion Because ho will have an extra day to live off his hosts common decency will decree that he bring along more bounteous gifts more liquor candy etc For those who like to spend all their spare time on the golf course the lengthened week end will give them more time to develop their strokes Consequently amateurs will become professionals and will quit work altogether My final surmise is that the fourday week will eventually lead to agitation for a threeday work week which will in some instances lead to a two and a half day week in order that we will bo able to avoid the Wednesday evening traffic But this seems to be where we came in
