Keswick Oat I THE ERA Serving York County Since DAVID HASKELL CARTER Why is Newmarkets road program faltering The program to repair Newmarkets streets by Coun Ray lasl week the worst roads In York Region has become the victim of confusion red tape and possibly post arrogance at Queens Park Last year at the Instigation of Ontario Highways department now the Ontario Trans portation and Communications department the town undertook an extensive and expensive I need study Much of the study was done by provincial government engineers and a large portion of the cost of the study was paid by Ontario government grants Object of the study was not only to deter mine the shortcomings and needs of the towns road system but to supply the provincial de partment with sufficient information about them to allow It to develop a long range program of expenditures to fix the streets up without over taxing the towns resources In other words the Ontario government Mid the study would allow it to guarantee the town enough money each year to undertake a longrange road updating program If the town would stick to the program That was before last Octobers provincial election This year the first year of the longrange road program recommended by the study New market council set out to implement It The need study recommended a road repair program costing of which was to be supplied by the province under its road subsidy program Instead of the town was told It would receive an per cent cut Appeals by council resulted in that sum being increased to with a hint that another might be made available tatcr in the According to Mr chairman of the towns works committee this sum Is barely flcient to complete the road rebuilding jobs The balance of the proposed program which was to be the first step in bringing tho towns long neglected road system up to date will have to be scrapped again for another year The question is did the provincial offi cials administering the road subsidies make this highhanded decision simply because tho government Is riding tho crest of a landslide victory or once again does the left hand at Queens Park simply not know what the right hand wrought only a few months ago Old Ontario Need a historical society Readers ERA Newmarket has one of the richest heritages of any community In Ontario yet it is one of the few without Its own historical society Both neighboring Aurora and have active historical societies and last week a group of King Township residents announced of such a society in that municipal- complex in Sharon takes some Interest In pre serving this communitys links with Its color ful past but as the story on todays page one on that societys financial problems indicates it already has Its hands full The face of Newmarket Is rapidly chang ing and the town needs an active historical soc iety to preserve that portion of Its heritage which can be preserved and lo make records of that portion which cannot before they tils- NEWSROOM NOTES Ah spring hockey ice snow I heard the other day that an old Indian In said that there was going to be more weeks of winter Judging by the weathers performance over the Easter weekend that fellows prediction might very well be true Like most mortgage payers I had plan ned on performing a number of spring chores the property during the threeday holiday Instead very little was done except watch ing some hockey on the Big Eye and at various around here ut most of the weekend was spent look ing out the living room window at the footand- half of snow In the backyard I even toyed with the Idea of taking a spin on the When I did venture outside I was greeted by a foot of Ice around the garbage and back door I even spent A couple of hours chopping Once I actually went inside the garage with the intention of a little spring house- cleaning I was foiled again when I discovered an inch of ice on the floor Things that should be picked up and placed on shelves things that should be thrown out things that should he burned were held fast to the floor by the Ice There were things that could be done In the house hut I also rejected this idea on prin ciple it was spring and the Faster weekend ami a man should lie outside working But the weekend did bring some sign of spring The driveway is a sea of mud and ruts There was a steady procession of cars along the road to Morgans Marina as the boat own ers started to gel their craft ready for the com- BILL SMI LEYS SUGAR AND SPICE Cracked eggs and rich farmers strike A lorg inn ltifnl and fun witty let ter from Mason of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture tells me bluntly that there is another species in our society which if it went on strike would make look like a box luncheon You go back to the war when sugar and butter were rationed and otherwise honest peo ple would cheat lie- or steal to get enough or more than enough And you say it would hap pen again if fanners went on strike I agree Some would but a minority in my opinion I think the fanners would get a good deal of them but nobody docs anything Ill quote bits from his letter and make tome comments He asks tersely What If all the farmers went on strike Most of soc iety and the majority of columnists seem to have forgotten that farmers continue to exist And thai Is what farmers are doing Exist ing Net farm income in Ontario has dropped thirty per cent in the lasl three years In Canadian farmers received less than ten cent of the money that Canadian consum- spent on food Well Mr Bailey Ill accept your figures or a start And they certainly dont make mo want to plunge into fanning with a mortgage and the prospect of working 10 or hours a day six days a week On the other hand like all figures they can be misleading How many Canadian farm- grow coffee lea fish sugar pepper peanut on millions In such an event yon suggest that Bootleg ging food at inflated prices would become as common as drug peddling The bootlegging farmers would start to show a profit Home might even he able to help at the mini mum wage Surely right there Is one spot where government could help by subsidiz ing farm wages The government subsidizes practically everything else that even approaches work or simply pays people not to work Surely the next logical step would he to make farm work attractive financially rather than paying farm ers not to grow grain or spuds or whatever However we mustnt mention government and logic in the same breath You mention something that depresses The National Hockey League season has ended and the playoffs are starting which means the will win the Stanley Cup Tiie baseball season is starting this week if the players and the owners can settle their differences which all seems like an exercise In futility because Baltimore is going to win It all next October The is about a mile- of the deepest sharpest leriiif potholes hi the world And this doesnt happen mil spring Is here and also means that the old Indian in Itogarllown is going to have to cat his peace Need winter stayed and watched that this la van here and touted sidewalk policy those little guys every Saturday a part of the r Thanks for your mor and question to you but for a chap like me who hasnt any more of his marbles than Is necessary to drift lazily through life it is a very Important one You sec with Hie roll on there was no way I could get confused There was only one thing I could do with It Hut when they replaced It with aerated commodity on the market followed suit my troubles really began lor some reason they make all the cans the same sle and shape and I keep getting them mixed up For example Suede Renew with silicones is ideal as long you dont decorate a dish of strawberries with it Itedi mi the other hand is an excellent product when not swished on suede shoes nil suede shoes are ill of bill Another of your points Me chord In 1 week The menu said one egg Do you know whit farmers got for eggs lasl week a doz en for Grade A large 7c a dozen for cracks This Is utterly ridiculous and somebody obv iously the farmer Is being shafted The only places anyway I share completely your burning wrath at I restaurant prices And now lets sit back and bear a howl of protest from the restaurant own I who are starving to death The average one I isnt and works long hours for a decent living But those room service prices in hotels drive right out of my skull Si for a sandwich or a pot of lukewarm coffee farming under todays conditions and that even if they can the liberated little woman has other ideas And you also point out rather pungently that If the average age of housewives would echo across the land would be apocalyptic Another point In your argument Is that cor porations may take over food production If wealthy corporations over replace the family Jim an organized labor there probably will be food strikes That is an appalling tho ught Would that mean that I couldnt buy one of those chickens that taste no more like chic ken than my old running shoes unless you plaster them with some synthetic flavoring Would It mean that I couldnt buy any of that enriched bread that tastes like wot klcenex J just Is not unexpected that I did it with a can of insect repellent The only thing that prevented me from my arms and legs with vaporlsateur was the fad that there wasnt a mosquito in sight- I do wish that manufacturers would make the cans different shapes For one thing Ing Miss on the distributor cap of my car didnt mako it start and for another peo ple at tho are beginning to talk about me behind my
